Roman Cheap Helmet vs Historically Accurate Helmet

A guide to help you get a good Roman helmet with a reasonable price.
Originally, Roman helmets were influenced by the neighboring Etruscans, people who utilised the "Nasua" type helmets. The Greeks in the south also influenced Roman design in the early history of Rome.
H. Russell Robinson in his book The Armour of Imperial Rome, published in 1975, classified into broad divisions the various forms of helmets that were found.

I must say that I'm somewhat surprised by just how different they look when you are wearing them. While all the important details are definitely either different or just missing in the cheap helmet, it's overall shape looks the same when you are just looking at it. But when you put it on, WOW, the historically accurate one just fills out your head so much better and looks much more imposing and intimidating. Much better. That being said, I'm not a huge fan of all things Roman. Not that they aren't cool, just not my thing. Now, a Viking helmet, THAT'S what I'd like. Much more my style. I must find a decently high quality Viking helmet!

Love your channel and I agree with you on most parts of this video. However as a historical fencer I always have a bad feeling when someone recommends helmets like these for sparring without clarification on the ruleset that has to be used. These helmets no matter how well they are made will fo example never protect you against a thrusting motion and this can happen easily by accident. So for training with an authentic feeling sureuse them, but definitly not for full contact sparring.

A question and possible video-topic for the Metatron! What gear would each of the roman kingdom and republican troops wear. Like Hastati, Principes, Triarii, Velites, Equites and any other I most likely missed. Type of helm, armor, sword, shield, javelin and sandals.. All gear, all units, all sub-periodes (early, late, specific incident.). What were the equipment made of? And if I am right. Before Gaius Marius, legionaries acquired their own gear. Did all of the, say, Triarii have the same gear? or did some of them have a breastplate and others just a gambeson? If you could make a video about this I would be most pleased!

The "historic" version is quite narrow, I can't imagine it has any use as a sun shade. Perhaps these serve to keep rain out of the eyes? Any explanation you can give would be appreciated.

Metatron, I’m aware of Sikh traditional hairstyles relating to head protection and helmets. I understand that samurai hairstyles may have had a practical aspect relating to wearing their helmets. Could you do a video on classical or medieval hairstyles and whether they fit with that cultures helmets?

Hey Metatron I love your videos. I am looking to buy some lorica segmentata armor. However I am a pretty thin guy with a 36" chest. Most pieces I see for sale are 44"+ which is way too big for me. Any ideas where I can find one that would fit?

My helmet seems to be in between the 2, I didn’t have a loop to secure a string for the cheekplates with so i drilled a hole to feed a string through. I had the hardware at the top to add the plume however. I don’t think ill buy another one anytime soon because no one really called the inaccuracy yet, my dirty little secret for now.

what about pre imperial helmets? I was 15-17 when I was into roman history mainly before and around Gaius Julius, do you have any of those to compare? or are there any difference?

Do you have an option for visually accurate helmets that are cheaply made for display purposes only?
