I had no problem staying hooked once I got a sense if the tone and photography... I loved it all. I can't honestly say that I can relate to it much since my parents came from rural Mexico and would've never dreamed to have the kind of luxuries the family in the movie had... but something about it does speak to me on a personal note. Maybe you're right, being Mexican or of Mexican parents makes it more appealing even subconsciously.

I think Cuarón really thought of his native country and Latin America in general when he made this movie. Sadly, we do understand many of the things portrayed without having to research them because our histories are so connected. I do agree is a very slow movie but its also a very satisfying one. There are more way than one to do a movie and people seem too used to fast-paced flicks, which shouldn't be the norm. I wouldn't be surprised if people "don't get it" or if the movie wins more awards. It's that kind of a film.

It really impressed me how a movie based I'm the 60s (when my father was born) could resonate with me to such a personal level. I watched Roma and I still love Grace's review because hwo could you not? I could not disagree more. I let it wash over me and it was powerful as a story and as a piece of art. I know the movie is not perfect, but it's damn close to me. Why is this? I think these factors are important to make the difference between good and wow: 1- I don't mind the slow pace at all. If a movie is showing something interesting I don't care if it takes its time. Long conversations and shots can add a lot to a scene for me. Barry Lyndon? That's my jam. I did think for a second the movie was going nowhere, but right there it went somewhere. Loved it. 2- I'm latino. Spanish and latino audiences share many cultural aspects and understand each other very well. The scenarios here look different to a latin american than it does to an american. It helps that Mexico was at the center of a cultural revolution of latino content from the 50s to the 70s 3- I know a little bit about Mexico's history, so that one chaotic and violent scene does not come out of nowhere for me. Again, latinos get each other. 4- I saw it in theaters. I could not get up from my seat, but I didn't want to either, because that thing on a widescreen is just something you have to see for yourself. It's overwhelming, like going into the sea, and I loved it. My fellow Roma lovers agree?

I do agree that this movie is perhaps better understood by Latinos/Spanish speakers. I don't think it would have had the same instant effect had I been from somewhere else other than Latin America. I saw it in one sitting, and thought it was quite poignant, it stayed with me days after I had watched it. Having said that I also think if people make the effort, they will see how incredible this movie is...

Totally loved the movie. I wish I could see it in theater, but even on tv it looks spectacular. I never minded the pacing, it felt soothing. And as a doctor, there's one scene (you all know which) that crushed me, because I've seen it before, in my hospital. I think I've never seen a similar scene being done so reallistically. 10/10 overall.

I think art is not about taste but about connection! When I watched Roma I felt it slow the first 20 minutes, but then I connected and I started to feel a lump in the throat, it wasn't sadness, it was nostalgia. I spent the following week thinking about my childhood, and especially about my mother. That's why some people didn't quite like it because there's not plot or story, it's like a painting. I didn't understand it I just connected with it.

It took me a long time to finish this movie as well. Like you said, that's probably the biggest problem about watching movies on Netflix. But when I finished watching this movie, I wasn't relieved that that the movie was over. I realized just how little I knew about Mexican and Latin American history, and it made me want to go out and do my research. I think that, that is probably what Cuaron intended. We're so used to narrations and expositions in movies, so we never have time to actually try and figure out what's going on, on our own. The movie is really slow but also engaging. And I ended up loving every minute of it. Thanks for your review, Grace! I love your channel!

Glad that you finally reviewed ROMA! Now, I don't think that is valid to criticize the similarities of the story with other films since the script was made entirely from Cuaron's memories, verified and yuxtaposed whith those of the real life characters, with very few "creative" additions or modifications. Otherwise, the movie would be insulting the testimonies of his family. In all cases, the fiction depicted in other movies is similar to the REALITY. Some elements might look a bit surreal and very "Anderson" as you said, but again, the reality depicted was THAT surreal. ROMA aims to pure realism, and that is reflected in the way it was filmed: objective shots with no music to "push" the audience to certain emotion. Every emotion feels real and honest, because everything happened to someone in real life. And life can be brutal.

Ohh my dear Grace, how evident it is you are from the US. The saddest part about Roma is that Cleo’s circumstances weren’t even that bad to begin with and that that kind of treatment of house workers continues to go on. I’m Mexican, and had several heated discussions with people I admire about Roma and they couldn’t see why Cleo was being mistreated. The movie is very important because it shines a light on the lives of these women, that in my native country shape the men that later become Cuarón, and gets the conversation going to touchy topics such as where is the line between slave and worker. Maybe it is because I am Mexican, but the slowness of the movie made me feel reverent to it, and the way life used to be, slow, now like the crazy situations we have going on now, and it added to the 70s feel of it. You are right in that the movie is too close to Cuaron’s heart but to my understanding, that makes it much better, because he tells it with passion.

It's my favorite film of the year and I think it's actually the best of the year. I'm from Mexico, so this film impacted me in a big way. I think it has multiple important messages ranging from the class division in Mexico, to the "Mexican macho" way of perceiving men while dismissing women (although things are evolving). The craft the film was made with is amazing, and Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira were top notch. I'm so glad we finally have a masterpiece of a film set in my country and representing my culture so truthfully.

After my wife and I finished watching Roma, I said, “I think I would have liked this more if I was Mexican.” Thank you, Grace, for sharing those links. They helped me understand the film better. It was apparent that this was a deeply personal project made for Mexico, and it is great that so many award shows are recognizing it. was a beautifully made film, but I agree the beginning was painfully slow.

Most people in mexico see discrimination and abuse of women so usual that they didn't appreciate it because its their reality. Also the lead actress is suffering because of the racism in their own country. For me the movie is amazing so I can't understand all tge blacklash the movie is recieving for regular people not used to other movies rather than fast and furious.

I agree i think that more than the whole movie and the story i apreciated more the cinematography, i it was beautiful, but yes the beginning it´s very slow and it doesn´t hook you until more of half of the movie, i think it has a beautiful story and cinematography but it´s not a movie for everybody, not everybody can appreciate it if you don´t know the whole backcround or details of it, it´s a great film but i don´t think it´s outstanding as everybody it´s saying.

Takes awhile to get going but in the second hour builds to a powerful and emotional experience especially the scenes in the furniture store, the hospital and on the beach. The black and white cinematography is reminiscent of some of the great auteur directors of the 50's and 60's.

I'm Mexican, and im glad to hear your review, Grace. Its true that many times The movie needs a bit more of resarch to the foreing audience, but to mexicans and probably for many countries of Latinoamérica... This all comes to close to our personal lives. That's why I been hoping to talk about Roma with someone from other country so i can fill The gaps through the eyes of someone who has lived and lives this situations. Im not an expert in history or cinema, but as Guillermo del Toro said, Im Mexican. And this is a movie that talk about The present from the past, and its about our time being in a past that came before.

Its actually pretty interesting that this movie can convey so much without telling you directly. However, from what I've noticed, many of the characters struggle with relationship problems, problems between adult figures and finding true love. It can't be a coincidence that Roma is just *Amor* spelled backwards. But that could be just unnecessary speculation lol

wow, grace thank you for this video!, I agree in so many ways because... well since I live in the neighborhood "roma" or "colonia roma" (where the movie was shot) I have to say that I found it quite nostalgic because I had the chance to grow in this place and I told my friends that not many people would understand the movie or what the concept is, because unless you had grown here (or at least in Mexico city) you would understand "the pace", "the places" all the tiny details that have changed throughout the years and of course the story, I hope one day you have the chance to visit this touristic neighborhood, I bet you'll love it when you walk around the first corner :)...cheers :)

I think this is Fellini with Tarkovsky. With both these directors they were making films within the context of there time and nation. Roma is doing the same, leaving it up to the viewer to find the context if they are foreign to it.

I've had many conversations with friends about Roma recently and I think as Latinamericans we understand this movie on a granular level, because it's how most of us grew up, the symbiotic relationship between those who are live in help and the family is familiar and easy to understand to us, but I can also understand how it blows some people's mind. Understanding the background and the history is incredibly important to correctly interpret the movie. The cinematography is so unbelievably STUNNING!

I had a knot tied loosely in my throat all the way through. And then at that one scene towards the end, that's so emotionally charged... I don't know how I didn't cry. It took me a while to finally sit and watch this film cuz I thought I'd be disappointed but man, was this an experience. And I didn't find it difficult to be immersed in this story either. I actually enjoyed the time spent on seemingly mundane things. I was as transported to 1970's Mexico as I was to 1980's Italy in CMBYN. Roma is up there as one of my favorites.

One thing that most viewers of non Latin American descent or those who don’t fully understand indigenous culture is why Alfonso uses black and white as the main color of the film, is due to the fact that Mixtecs are those who come from rain. The shots in the beginning and end represent the cycle of how rain is always going up and down. The subject of occult brings a new light on indigenous culture that many don’t see in the shots that he presents to the viewer.
