I just want to say thank you for posting this. I use it in my classes to show standing waves.

I thought also last week about using it with my students but I finally decided not to do it because, as Zade Johnston said, those are not really the actual standing waves. Guitars' strings vibrates always on the fundamental mode.

The rolling shutter effect is amazing anyways :) although I'm not able to record it with my phone

You can actually kinda see something similar while looking at the actual strings without a camera if you like move your eyes. I'm not quite sure what the reason is, but I assume that it is something similar and has to do with how our brains process images.

I don't think those are the actual standing waves, I think it's an artefact of the shutter speed of your camera. It's still pretty cool to see though :)

This is caused by an effect called Rolling Shutter. CMOS sensors (like the iPhone's) don't capture the entire frame instantaneously and different lines are captured at different points in time so everything is all distorted, also doesn't work if you hold you iPhone parallel to the strings, has to be perpendicular

@@structuralmusicdesign other than the orientation of camera. Is there a way to fix this by tweaking parameters such as shutter speed? Thank you in advance.

@@user-xv4he4mt4x To my knowledge you just have to get your hands on a camera with a global shutter which captures the whole frame at once, though they are VERY pricey
