Rolling huts: metal-clad tiny wheeled homes move on a meadow
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
When Michal Friedrich bought an old farm-turned-RV-park in Washington State’s Methow Valley, he wanted to restore the floodplain meadow while leaving it open to guests. He called on Seattle architect Tom Kundig, known for his mechanized homes often reliant on archaic pulleys, cranks and levers, to construct alternative mobile cabins (alternative RV park).
The six “rolling huts”- steel clad boxes on steel wheels- have never actually rolled (they were built on-site by local contractors), but they fit the legal definition of “mobile” and the site’s zoning as an RV park. Each tiny, elevated cabin is left as raw as possible with an all-plywood interior - including plywood furniture that can be reconfigured from benches and stools to coffee table to a bed.
The 200-square-foot floating huts (each a nightly rental) are electrified, but not plumbed so each comes with a composting toilet (and access to the bunkhouse with more toilets and showers) and a bucket for gathering water from the hand pump directly below.
The Rolling Huts were inspired by Kundig’s “Delta Shelter”, the home the architect designed on the same property for Friedrich and his family. Also a steel box on stilts, this one has metal shutters close up the entire house via a crank mechanism comprised of gears and pulleys. A hand-powered crank, like a ship’s wheel, moves all four shutters at once to close up the home (even during a power outage).

What I really like about Kirsten's videos is that often her entire family will stay in a location, giving us a better, more realistic image of how the place could accommodate a family with children.

baudellio charles hahaha I know right. Must be transportable, add on wheels. ✔️ Although the loophole seems to put everything at ease. What happens when or if they must move. It's happened in the past. I need to watch it over again. As for who owns the land. But at times there have been instances where someone either wants access or possibly federal government wants access, such as adding in a road/byway. Even in the oddest areas. Really cut throat oh no 🤦🏻♀️what just happened... they want to what!?! If it's leased land your at someone else's mercy. And as mentioned about the government... "The power of eminent domain allows the government to take private land for public purposes only if the government provides fair compensation to the property owner. The process through which the government acquires private property for public benefit is known as condemnation." The reason for a stipulation for a home to be mobile leads me to the fine print and logic, that one day someone may tell you to move the Mobile home. That in itself would make me leery of not being able to truly move those homes. But then again. Take the wood down and take them apart... would be the simples logical move. Just like they were built they can be taken apart. So the materials use where ingenious! 💆🏻 What a gorgeous area!!! And it's great they are raised for caution against flooding within the low area they are in. I'd love to stay there!

baudellio charles so I read the area is a flood plain and they had to have wheels to be mobile for the insurance. I was thinking 💭 hmmm, I hope they have enough height. I'll tell yah, there have been some storms lately that are dripping months of rain in the matter of hours. I lived in Florida for 19 years and some of the older stilt homes where oddly higher in height. And never have flood issues when we flood. Oh my my. This one home, my best friends parents had built a beautiful home raised and stucko look but he mad a lower garage that swooped around the home and went under the house. Oh her parents had 2 flooded vehicle'a because of the way he built it. And walled it in.

MzClementine that's sweet Mei just live out in the countryside cause I can't stand the city if I had it my way I rather be Inna off-grid tiny house but my wife would complain when she is a school teacher who boards alot of shit lol. I am building a tiny house and hopefully I'll be raising up a garage for my tools. I'm just glad I can hunt off my property in Alabama it rains alot her as well
The simplicity of the tiny houses exudes a certain serenity and harmony with the surroundings. Reminds us of a younger version of ourselves when things seemed so much simpler.
View from the huts window almost made me cry. Gorgeous and beautiful, bless!
This scenery is absolutely amazing!
Very beautiful shelters, simple but for filling your needs. Thank you for sharing your amazing video
I think I remember seeing one of these structures covered in the video in an edition of Dwell magazine. Nice to see a personal tour of this structure. I find the structure both beautiful and practical.
Incredible atmosphere those huts and the location!
Rock out! Big boost in production values with this one! I dug that opening Pan & the Drone work :] Good job you guys!
Fantastic! great look and functionality. The main house with the mechanical shutters is a dream
Wow that sound effect at the end really got to me. Thanks!
another great idea! I hope a lot of people do enjoy these cute little getaways!

Nice to so you in my "neck of the woods". I love the Methow Valley, I'm going to check out this place!
We stayed in one of the huts. Such an amazing experience!
Once again, Kirsten, I'm very impressed with your content.
Another vantastic dwelling, and again I say this, you thought you seen it all and then something new like this comes up ! Very nice very peaceful very simple
Should redo the inside with ceder paneling for a better look and for the aroma. A nice Murphy bed couch would be nice too.
Love love love you and your family. Incredible being.
I love Kirsten's films! This is a lovely place!
Awesome video! Great work! Gorgeous shots with the drone - stunning images!
The almost unbroken view up to the trees from inside of the hut is very effective. And I love the mechanical crank wheel.
They are so amazing on the inside.
Love this concept Rustic and practical
Kids make everything seem fun!👍🏽
I have a place in the hills I'd love to do this thank you for sharing love your work
Hi Kirsten.... Love your channel. it is very inspiring.
Kirsten does a great job of videoing...hence her ability to live on her nice work. She's been everywhere....maybe "not the moon yet"...but when they build a TinyHouse there....we'll get to see it first hand.
I really like the patina that bare steel takes on. I bought a Caboose and rail to do something similar on a lot my parents own and have been pleased with the results. It is in a high risk fire area so the steel offers more protection than a wood structure. Advances in LED lighting and solar power have made it much easier to live off grid.
It was actually to get around insurance because it's built on a floodplain and to get insurance it had to be movable

another reason - "mobile" homes are also taxed differently. if they had no wheels or no ability to be moved, they would be taxed as a permanent structures. Don't know about WA, but in NJ they would probably pay 10X in property taxes. According to Zillow, property is 22 acres and is only taxed at $4838 per year! (2017)

The are not really movable. But probably only the wheels will be flooded.

Should have put the composting toilet pod on the outside on an easy access shelf underneath the shelter.
Looks perfect !
I love the work you do :D
these smart n portable houses are so cool.
AMAZING......love this ...I would definitely live here............
FANTASTIC; A LOT OF GREAT IDEAS AND LOVE THE LAYOUT AND STRUCTURE EASY WINDOWS TO WASH, I'M GIVING YOU 5 HEART'S FOR THE VIDEO GOOD JOB:💖💖💖💖💖,Ⓜ
Very cool. It does have that Frank Lloyd Wright, beauty, form, function thing going on, but designed and built in this century.
Beautiful!

K Catfish There is water, you just have to walk a little to get it.
Live about 1 hour from these. Had no idea. You see the juxtaposition of modern/nature a lot in the Seattle area. Also, keep in mind the materials used are reclaimed. Reused sometimes looks rough, but it’s good for the environment.
I can hear your husband's accent in your oldest daughter's voice. That's cool!
thank you, i got a fresh idea now!
This house very nice, it have many good views
Down the highway from my place. Roughly about two and half hours over the Cascade mountains.

love those!!
very, very cool, would have stayed here in my 20's and 30's 4 sure, getting to old for not having the comforts of home now ;)
Nice location, though not sure I would want to stay there because as nice as they look, the furnishings don't seem very comfortable or accommodating.

Oh to meditate and rest in such a place
Love it!
Basic enginuity. Imagine if this blueprint was used in say....earthquake zones, or hurricane areas? The beaches? I know that the same rusty steal look is used on some bridges in the town on the East Coast of North Carolina where I used to live. When first built i thought "how silly...it'll eventually rust through if they don't paint it!" But apparently the oxidation ends up PROTECTING it and it NEVER has to be painted. It's kinda brilliant. As low maintenance as you can get. As far as I can tell it'll last centuries...literally! 😊♥
excellent. more every country
It’s a lot better than renting a 70sf closet w/ community bathroom in friggin’ NY!
Omg the baby has gotten so big.
Pretty cool.
that terracotta industrial rust is always so whimsical to me
Un-mobile, mobile huts. Haha. Love your channel.
Cozyyyy place, like it muchhhhh
Todo está precioso solo un detalle y es porque se ve muy obscuro el video y eso en algunas partes, por favor graben en 1080 p o limpien su lente ya que ay unas partes donde se ve borroso de todo lo demás está súper bienales Cabañas
I've seen these structures before in mags. I wish there had been more of Nicolás Boullosa's critique.

If you are thinking you like the Methow Valley and might want to move there be warned that parts of the valley are always on fire from July to Sep and the valley fills up with wildfire smoke.
Hermoso!!
Hey hi, Kirsten, Very creative indeed!... The wheel could be worked into an exercise video as well as doubling as a piece of modern art! :)

Jojo Crazy Cat And seem stable enough that they won't wash away in a strong flow.
I like it.
Can you give more info on where to get those steel wheels. It's perfect for what I need.
The bathroom wasn't clad in just wood, per se. That's marine grade plywood which is treated to offer protection against fungal decay in wet environments. Still not a great choice for bathrooms, but it matches the decor elsewhere I guess.
It's like going camping.............all the time. Obviously not everyone's cup of tea, pretty awesome IMO.
Its remind of 'Rietveld Schröder House' in Utrecht, The Netherlands
They got that technicality wrong they are supposed to be road worthy, and able to be legally towed on the roads.
Merci
grate idea for a flood plane
Kinda funny she says house is focused to meadow to feel in nature but looks to me they in nature!,lol cool
Ummm...how can you "enjoy the solitude" when there are several other huts piled right on top of each other. I mean, with all that land, why so close together????

Those outdoor deck chairs look cozy at 7:30. Were they made on site as well? It's nice that they can come together to form a bench.
Love everything about the vid ... except how shaky it is from time to time.
To close to each other.
Wow..interesting
Neat ♥️ would do amazing if they rented out to hunters. The steel doors are amazing!

Put some cooking oil on the gears and bushings and you will do it with one hand. You have oil steal or it sets up with rust.

Yes for sure, I was thinking that too. But please use machine grease or gear oil, as cooking oil will go rancid.
I wouldn't mind a weekend get away there. We live close enough.
Don't see ur neighbors If they don't come out. Lol
I really hate when people say its "small and minimalistic" like the two are combined - Just because something is small, doens't mean its minimalistic at all.
