Family got unbuildable lot. They raised rustic-modern masterpiece.
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
John Lautner’s rustic-modern cabin, tucked away in the San Jacinto mountains outside LA, is a classic example of organic architecture. In 1957, the Pearlman family used an unbuildable lot at Idyllwild to raise a bold dwelling that erases the line between inside and outside.
On the panoramic view side of the home, rough, unmilled logs act as structural support, but accompanied only by floor-to-ceiling glass, they become camouflaged with the surrounding oaks, cedars and pines.
Lautner (a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright) went on to become world-renowned, but the Pearlman Cabin in the resort town of Idyllwild, was his first round house (even before his iconic Chemosphere (1960) or Zimmerman Residence (1968). Nancy Pearlman, who was 10 when the home was built, remembers it was her mother who wanted the round house to go with the round table as a centerpiece.
“It just seems so natural to me to have one big beautiful room,” explains Nancy, who says they’ve slept 25 on the floor, “It’s very rustic, but it’s very practical”.
Nancy’s uncle built the home while living in a tent. He only needed help with a few elements, like installing the massive windows and dynamiting some of the boulders to lay a foundation.

Im addicted to your channel, Kirsten. Like others have said, I appreciate that you don't add music and we can hear the natural sounds. I also appreciate that there isn't an intro, and you keep the focus on the home/dwelling/person being interviewed. Your children are also so respectful. I can only imagine how valuable it is to have this exposure to new places and people to their upbringing. Thank you, and I will always look forward to your content. Please never change!

Same! They are living the life I would love to live one day
She has so many great memories in that home. I hope that the cabin will remain in her family, there will be generations of stories.
What a work of art. Thank you for showing us this. How rich your children are to experience such spaces. What good parents they have.

I love that home owner ... she is so full of life
This is one of my favorite Lautner designs. His use of actual tree trunks for columns to support the roof and those big glass windows is what really make this "cabin" stand out.
I can see how hospitable she is by the way she laid out the table with all the food and drinks. She had to make you feel very welcome. Jane, Philadelphia

Nancy is such a delightful, sweet soul. I love how good she is with the kids. Cool to hear all the house memories and glad she has kept the place up.
John Lautner. A member of the Holy Trinity of genius 20th century architects. This is my favorite of his designs, I bow down ❤

It says a ton about him that he just sat on the land for a full day to get a bit of the feel of it! Definitely applause is due here for really tuning in.
Ok, the hidden wedge window framing is genius.

My very favorite interview of a beautiful energetic loving lady. You can tell she loves children. I hope she has grandchildren because they would sure love her. If I could choose any home you’ve shown, this one is my favorite, the very best.
I especially appreciate that such interesting things got built for a time. It really was a special period until the 70s when wealth combined with a relative lack of zoning. Lots of wild safety violations in the homes featured on this channel. But there’s something special that was lost when zoning and building regs came into effect.
Beautiful structure, and what nice lady showing it to us through you.🏡 😀
Its great that the kids can and want to ask questions!

Uncle Bill is the real hero here
I love that this work of art is still a family vacation home.
What an incredible Uncle & Architect and Builder who left a beautiful legacy for the family to enjoy Nature.
A don't know which I like better. The delightful lady of the wonderful house.
Perfect. Aside from, the insulation problem. But if you aren't living there all the time you just need a good fire at times and then get into your sleeping bag. I would have loved growing up there.
Kirsten I love your videos! Been watching them for years… Thank you.
The cabin is so unique, the view to die for. I really appreciated how she talked with your kids. Thank you for sharing.
I LOVE her energy!
John Lautner design shines. Great spot
This place is stunning and luxurious on a heart and soul level.
This reminds me of my family and our cabin that was built by my dad, brothers and extended family. It wasnt as beautiful architecturaly but everything else is just the same. Ours was rustic built in the early 50's. It was like a time capsule with all of the old books, magazines, board games that we enjoyed over and over again. We too had no tv. My parents wanted us to enjoy nature and family time. I remember when my dad replaced the dishwasher at home with a newer model, he asked Mom if she wanted the old one taken to the cabin. My mom refused because the cabin was the only place where us kids had to do the dishes. Those were wonderful times spent in the woods at that cabin with family and friends. This video took me back. Even the sound of the jays in the trees. Thats the sound of my beloved family cabin.
There is rarely such a thing as an unbuildable lot, only unrealistic expectations. Cool vision here.👍🍁🤙
Little slice of heaven. So blessed.
Oh my gosh Kirsten what a beautiful production you made! I adore how your children engaged the host so much, she thrived off off their questions and they were genuinely interested in what she said, what wonderful people you are raising. She was like a garden fairy and a fire fly all woven together flitting around her forest home so happy to entertain and share this lovely space her parents created, I felt like I was there. So much happiness I’m moved emotionally by the beauty. The videography you and your husband created is stunning!
Its weird that I don't know you, yet remember back before you even met your spouse. All the same, your channel retains a solid score for interestingness.
So good I'll watch it a second time!
I am a complete and utter Lautner-maniac. Thank you for this!
When she walked into the home, she excitedly said, WOW! And the owner of the home was laughing with delight, understanding the impression the room makes on people. It is so beautiful, and I love the angles of the glass walls that face the forest. She is exactly correct, that it makes it seem like you are IN the forest. I absolutely love that room. I probably would have skipped a little into the room myself, delighted and not really knowing how to react. Kristen immediately sat down to enjoy the view. I love this owner, because she loves the excitement of Los Angeles - I loved the 30 years I lived there - but also appreciates this quiet beauty in the mountains. I like the Lake Elsinore area, and I found a couple of lots that I could afford, but they too are unbuildable - too steep. It would cost a lot of money to build there, and I wouldn't be able to get much of a house and there would be no yard for my dog, unless I spent more money to have it terraced. So, for me, it remains unbuildable. There are some lots, okay, but not with a lake view. I love the refrigerator - it fools you because one assumes there is an oven beneath the burners. I'm so glad you went to see this house and that we can see it too. And, the owner is such a sweet woman who loves to laugh and is delighted with her home today as much as she has always been. It's really amazing.
What a cool lady, thanks for sharing your home😍!
Just LOVE the idea that Pete Seeger was there! This house is definitely not made of ticky tacky! (incidentally, I named my childhood invisible friend after that song, the idea that it has a connection to such a beautiful place makes it extra special)
Very cool, especially for its time.
Another great presentation. The owner was so informative and entertaining. Her childlike joy was contagious. It’s understandable since the energy/vibe of the residence is joyful, intimate and relaxed.
This is a really good tour of the home with the owner and you with your kids there. Extra nostalgia and excitement from the tour guide. Excellent care of their Masterpiece 😎
I love it so much Your mom and her brother were genius …it’s just so special Just wonderful … I thank you for sharing 😘…
Okay, this is a seriously unique (and wonderful) home.
What a unique home 🏠. Love those views of the forest. Wow mind blown🤯 Thanks for sharing this video.
Beautiful story. It's heartening to hear of such inventiveness and individuality, especially since the young folks can see what is possible.
What a marvelous house! I lived in Julian CA for a while (south of her) and my in-laws had a home from the same era. Many houses up in those mountains were built as vacation homes. She is so dear - making it fun for the kids!
What a place!
Kirsten has an uncanny knack for finding the very best. This is the coolest treehouse ever.
I am a huge mid-century modern fan and this is a beautiful place. I could certainly live there happily full-time, but I already live in a mid-century modern home that I love. (It's just not round.) Thanks for this wonderful tour.
Wow, I’m not sure who I love more. The wonderful home, or the adorable owner! Thank you Kirsten et family xx
Beautiful!!! Production. Kirsten your family is beautiful❤
Incredible.
You’re one of my absolute favorite content creators Kirsten. Appreciate you and the Family! 🙏
That view is absolutely gorgeous!
Kirsten, I appreciate how you lets us enjoy her great memories. Thanks.
I love Idy!! I go as often as I can. I'd live there if I could!
Wonderful space and sweet memories. A perfect episode.
what an uncle
WOW!!! What an incredible “cabin”. Those picture windows set into the tree trunks is brilliant! It truly gives the feel of being outdoors.
An unassuming but still magical little cabin in the woods. John Lautner was probably the master of mid twentieth century California residential architecture. He apprenticed with Wright and learned much but went on to carve out his own distinctive style. A round floor plan like the one in this cabin is a design he often used but the houses for which he is famous were much larger, richer, and more intricately detailed. Mansions.
Nice sharing Vidio.. very inspiring and useful.. always succses 🇮🇩🙏🌸👍
A sensible house. It fits into the landspace to become part of the landscape. It has everything needed for a comfortable, healthy life. The really sensible part is in the living arrangements. A kitchen fully connected to all activities, yet it can be closed off to small children. Living and sleeping in the same family space might be a challenge full time, depending on work and school schedules. Dad's own bedroom for snoring is a good escaperoom for anyone needing downtime. A space big enough to enjoy individual activity yet holding everyone in a cosy cocoon. Magical. Straight windows also keep building/repair costs down. Interesting shapes and nooks too.
Another fun video! Thank you both for bringing the world of fascinating architecture to YT.
This is a wonderful build and a wonderful hostess! Thank you so much for the stories and histories of this place! My dream has always been to build a round house, but I LOVE the wall spacing mimicking being in a forest with trees. Awesome!
OMG of course! John Lautner! Wow what a place!
I live near Idyllwild and the people who live/vacation in the mountains always have the most interesting stories! ❤❤
Thanks for sharing so we can also enjoy the fruits of your labor and those that had the vision and tenacity to make a dream ad reality.
Love it , God bless 🙏
What a peaceful place, thanks
Beautiful home, perfect for the location, great that it is south facing for the winter sun and amazing view.
I love the way she engaged with the children -- giving them guessing games like "where is the refrigerator?"
Incredible!!!
If anyone needs more Lautner, this home was also featured recently on the Open Space channel.
Это один из самых необычных домов, которые я пока видел. Спасибо !
Wow. That's a great place. I agree, one room, open concept is perfect. I'd want to upgrade the kitchen, but that's it.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL !
Thanks for sharing. My favorite trip up Mt Jacinto is from Palm Springs, up the aerial tramway. What a rush, and an extreme temperature change from the desert floor to the station on the peak
I'd like to know more about the architecture, especially how the ceiling, roof, and supports were constructed.
So fabulous. Love it all!
Such a delightful cabin. Who wouldnt want to vacation there 😊
Wow! Absolutely beautiful!
What a wonderful place ❤
Ingenious! Finding a way to access the internal pipes in an aesthetic and creative way! I would live in this house in a heartbeat! Who needs separate bedrooms when you have those incredible views, cocooned by those trees and enveloped by those warm earthy tones, under a circular-featured ceiling! I am in love!!
Wow. What a story. Those windows between the tree posts are killer. Absolutely killer. I’d love to see the contraption she uses to clean them. I’ve never met anyone who had cool windows in their house that didn’t eventually invent something nifty to clean them with. lol
Love! Love! this home ❤❤
Great video as usual.
What a stunning house 👏
Thank you for this. As a builder I learned a couple things that may inspire a custom home
Wow!! That is AMAZING! 🤩
How beautiful!❤
Beautiful surroundings for the very unique home! WOW!
What a great place to vacation as a child or adult : )
How wonderful!!
♥️♥️♥️ this wonderful cabin!
I watched the whole video with a smile!
Beautiful 😊 Best yet 😊
Nice!! What a lovely lady.
Gorgeous.
Very nice reminiscing 👌🤓🙏🏾
My life experience tells me that one room is plenty enough.
Special place!
Those windows... ❤
Awesome use of land. Many rural houses in Jamaica are like this. However this building reminds me of a study project in conservation I did a CU called the Strutt House in Quebec. You should visit through the school. The architect was James Strutt.
