This video is very old schol style. No fancy video editing or animation. Just hand writing and drawing. But the idea is explained in a very effective. Best of all, I like the calm voice. And best-er thing - there is no annoying background music! Bravo!

Nice video! My car uses this type of pin for the gear shift housing. Interesting to see how such a little pin makes a huge difference!

There is a tool called a pin punch. It's a punch wit h a shaft that is the size of the roll pin and the same size for about 4 inches so it can drive the pin out with the punch and hammer. Similar to these: www.amazon.com/Starrett-S248-Extended-Diameters-Cardboard/dp/B0006J4K5Q/ref=zg_bs_2225059011_34/132-9302805-3272406?pd_rd_i=B07VD1F1YK&psc=1 You don't have to purchase Starret brand but by a quality brand.

What I've OFTEN wished for is a spring load/automatic pin punch set. One holder/handle with interchangeable pin/roll pin sizes. It'd be REALLY handy to be able to hold piece in one hand and just push punch with the other.

These punches have a tip that sticks out of the end to help with alignment. This is all I have seen to aid the installation of pin toll pins. too bad they are not magnetic. www.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-W7559-Roll-Punch/dp/B072HJRTZF/ref=asc_df_B072HJRTZF/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=241941495556&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14110584835064228426&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9032064&hvtargid=pla-583792021347&psc=1

Great explanation! one question: the nominal size quoted for pin is the size of the "relaxed" pin, or the size of the hole you want to fit in?

Special pin punches are available for installing roll pins. Also when possible, clamping small vise grips close to the starting end makes it much easier to start the pin.

Agreed. I'm aware of these punches but it is not required. Most roll pins are tapered at one or both ends to make installation easier. If the interference fit is really tight you may need to use the vise grip trick.

@@DrivelineMaster Not required? That depends. If the interference fit is an overly tight one and the roll pin has to be removed and reused often, eventually you will either have to use a new pin or wish you used the specially designed punch. And while we are at it on retaining pins which includes roll pins, sometimes it is best to use a starter punch. By that I mean a very short pin punch. I know of one shop that bends pin punches on a regular basis. Tight pins and big hammers = bent punches.

Haha Hole on the shaft

I understand the concept now, but the shaft with a hole in it to keep the ball bearing in place is not a good example.

I think you missed the point with the gear and the bearing. The idea is that the roll pin keeps the gear and bearing from being removed from the shaft or it can control the axial movement of the gear.
