    Having both, I wear the Omega 9/10 times.. Points on the Omega - The sapphire crystal is phenomenal! (The lack of AR drives me insane on the Sub, I’m ok with the cyclops though) - I like the look of dive bezel far more than the sub.. (but it’s absolute hot trash to use. Too stiff, too difficult to grasp to rotate) - The deep black of the dial and the colour matched date window are a fabulous touch ! It’s arguably a better looking watch than the Sub over all. - Sounds stupid, but the case back having the sea lion appeals more to me! -The profile on the wrist is very good. Feels very good to wear! -The bracelet has more points of movement, making it really quite comfortable. -The lack of micro adjust is baffling.. the dive extension is absolutely useless. - got mine at 2700$ from my AD, so it made the Rolex look really very expensive ! - it’s far less in your face and that’s very important to me! Where the Rolex is better - Rotating bezel is far superior ! - The etched RolexRolexRolex on the inside is my absolute favourite part of the Rolex! I love it far too much! What a brilliant detail ! - the dots and hands are in white gold and I prefer the lume on this. - the case is very nice, the clasp is phenomenal, the snick is crisp! I personally like the bracelet of the SMPc more, even though the clasp of the Rolex is far better . The bracelet taper feels very nice too! But Jubilee and president bracelets are the real Rolex gems imo. - The 4hz seconds sweep is phenomenal .. oh, so much nicer to view than the omegas ! I personally like the Co Axial movement more, but the sweep of the Rolex is too nice to neglect .

    I am fortunate enough to own both...My Sub was a college graduation gift and it's absolutely stunning. I bought my Seamaster brand new about 6 months later and it too is stunningly beautiful. Honestly, I get more enjoyment out of my Omega and love the historicity of the brand, especially its ties to WWII. Can't go wrong with either one, it's really a win either way.

    I vote for the Omega. Intrinsically the Rolex is a tad better perhaps, mainly the bezel movement and clasp, but when you factor in price, the Omega wins. Also, there is an aspect of the Omega that is better than the Rolex that you didn't mention. Rolex has issues with alignment on their dials, as you pointed out in your submariner review. I've noticed this in other rolexes at ADs (this problem seems to be present with Tudor too). The omega alignment is much better, perhaps because it's done by machines? All the markers look perfect and the logo is perfectly centered as far as I can tell. If not, it's at least better than the Rolex. I suspect the 2018 SMPc is hands down better than the Rolex. Unfortunately, I've heard it's bigger and heavier, which is the wrong direction for Omega to be going in my opinion.

    @@pendaranroberts4350 My Tudor BB GMT has a calendar alignment issue, but since they fixed the flawed movement which sporadically jumped the calendar an extra day...and the "fix" included replacement parts as well as extra scratches...at no additional charge...I will live with the alignment issue. Over 50% of Tudor BB GMT watches needed to be "fixed" AFTER the factory DEVELOPED a "fix" and shipped the parts worldwide. I wanted a Black Bay Steel and Gold (S&G) but this incident steered me to the Omega 212.30.41.20.03.001 SMPc...which I am wearing. Have you seen the Rolex factory robot pods? I seriously doubt the misalignment is due to lack of hand fitting. A trained human technician can see the misalignment EASILY. Untrained customers see it! This is too much reliance on robotics. I have never had to send an Omega for anything but normal service.

    I think that some people will not like the Omega bracelet being bulkier, non-tapering and sharper edges (although the sharpness can be tamed somewhat). The 2016 ceramic 41mm version is comfier than both the sub and the new 2018 42mm version. However, I personally prefer the style of the Omega 5/9link bracelet than the sub's oyster, I think it's more versatile and can look dressier.

    Arman Talwar - do you find the crystal of the Omega to smudge or smear easily when worn under a cuff of a shirt or jacket? Since it’s black dial, I am assuming it’s easy for that to happen.

  • @atthelord

    @atthelord

    5 жыл бұрын

    Dev Padda under a dress cuff, neither will smudge per se because dry cloth won’t smudge the crystal, our own naturally oily fingertips will, if you touch it.. lol Both can be very easily wiped off. They are more apparent on the sub, especially around the cyclops, but since both have ceramic bezels and sapphire crystals, they’re smudge magnets! Very easily cleanable smudge magnets none the less. I wear specs, so more often than not carry a micro fibre cloth .. cleans off in one swipe 😃 Though if you’re wearing something under a suit/dress shirt , wear the sub, the omega is a tad bit more informal to me (personally), even though both are diving watches anyway. The sub in this case will look better, ( Very Sean Connery, oof 🔥😉) where as the omega will slide under better because of the lack of teeth on the bezel. So it’s your call ..

By the way, humble correction on the material used for the bezel insert on the Seamaster 300 Diver. It is coated in Chromium Nitride (anti-corrosion). One of the models on the Planet Ocean is the one coated with Liquid Metal. Lastly, I was a bit thrilled you mentioned almost no-one dives using a $4000 watch. The liquidmetal graduations are made of metal. It's a proprietary process, developed by Cal Tech, that allows manipulation of metal in a semi-plastic state. It's as if metal has been pressed/jammed into each graduation/numeral cavity on the bezel. Swatch group paid a lot of money to have industry-exclusive use of Liquidmetal technology, and it is a legit feather in the cap of the Omega. It might be reserved for the Planet Ocean line within the Seamaster range, but omega does use rhodium plated 18k white gold indices, hands, and logos. Rhodium adds stability to the white gold and makes the metal appear even "whiter". Keep up the great work as always. Big love from Detroit.

    I am lucky enough to own both of these watches as well as some other extremely popular high end pieces and at one time they were my obtainable grails both of them. Both watches are amazing obviously the Omega has a few knocks against it but for the price I paid I cant complain. I paid something like 2500usd for the Omega and that is a flat out steal for this watch since then 2015 ish the prices on them have seemed to creep up a bit. You cannot beat the Omega for "entry" level luxury diver its flat out the best for the money imo. People seem to hate on the bracelet wich I simply cannot understand when you wear the watch it looks awesome. This Omega is the watch when someone says Omega I think of this Seamaster immediately it is "the" Omega watch to me. Dev Padda - I usually wear my sleeves rolled up, or short sleeve shirts. However, I still find myself cleaning the crystal a few times a day. One thing to keep in mind is that Omega does AR coating on the front and back of the crystal. The AR coating on the front can develop micro scratches over time, so for some it kind of defeats the purpose.

    CGI Artist to be fair, Omega Caliber 2500 is a bit more than a regular issue ETA 2892-A2 (which is quite good as well) with co-axial slapped on. It also got 27 jewels, 48 hours powerreserve and the whole movement are made up of top/chronometer grade parts to make sure it pulls off the performance required for COSC level accuracy and quality. Plus a few other Omega tweaks and the Omega rotor, of course. All of these goodies coupled with the Co-Axial escapement makes for a pretty nice movement. :)

    Zyking You are exactly correct. Actually it has very few parts aside from the base plate shared with the 2892-A2. The 2500D is actually based on the Omega 1120. Which is already based on the 2892-A2. The 2892-A2 has 21 jewels, the 1120 has 23 jewels, the 2500A has 27 jewels, as well as a free sprung balance. It also shares a three level design that is shared with the 8500 co-axial. The 2500 A,B,C all have two level designs. Both the 2 and 3 level designs were initially thought up by George Daniels, not Omega. In fact the "new" 3 level design is the original co-axial design. The 2 level was made by Daniels when some brands he tried to sell the co-axial to said it was too thick, so he redesigned it to the 2 level to save vertical space. I cringe when people say the 2500d is just a modified 2892-A2. Also the Omega Seamaster can be had with a adjustable clasp, which is superior to the original for a minimal price. 👍 same clasp as the Seamaster 300 2018 model.

    Interesting points of view and nicely presented. My 2007 300M end links are rock solid and has been worn daily. As for the Rolex clasp, pretty much the same as an old Seiko. Personally I prefer the Omega. As for the wet suit diving adjustment, I use my 300M as a back up to my dive computer (also Swiss made) and most people I dive with use a Seamaster/Planet ocean. Years ago I chose the Omega over the Rolex largely due to brand perception.

    @JustBlueFish Watch Reviews I'm no clasp expert, but I do have a Seiko from 20+ years ago and the design is identical. I did see another Rolex/Omega video too that said the Submariner is stamped rather than machined like the Omega - which surprised me, as I said I've taken that at face value but is food for thought. The Submariner has grown on me an awful lot, but only the one with the black dial and bezel (not sure if they still make it). It's grown on me so much - I would consider trying one for size when I next goto the jewellers.

    I prefer the design language of the Omega. That said, I prefer older Omega SMPs with the 41mm case and 1120 movement. I'm not a fan of the co-axial movements, they made the watch thicker, and I am doubtful of the trade-offs made for a 'signature' technology (8bps vs 7bps, aforementioned thicker movement, does it really gain anything worthwhile, lack of ease of service by a trained watchmaker, etc.). I like the smoother Omega bezel, it's snag-free, and once you set it, an incidental bump will not change it. I like the look of the 5-link Omega bracelet better, but I agree that the Rolex clasp is far and away the better design.

    The new omega 300m is better and is on par with the Rolex sub in everything except materials, bracelet, bezel, history and resale. In fact, it beats the sub in terms of movement (8800), lume, tool functionality (being more anti magnetic, with glide lock and additional extension), and dial..... and is overall better value for money (ignoring aftermarket retention). Omega now have a 5 year warranty

    Did you notice the right lugs on the Seamaster are thicker than the left? I have the same Seamaster and the difference in lug thickness is the same on my watch. You'll also notice when you run your finger down the left side of the watch from the bezel to the case it's flush. And if you do the same on the right side it's not flush because there's more metal on that side of the case.

    There is too much attention to design, after all it's a question of taste. I expected to hear few words about movement accuracy. I think I heard in another video that Submariner gains an extra second in one week. 1) so how accurate Seamaster is? 2) can you hear or feel the self-winding rotor or is it as subtle as Sub's? 3) what about service costs between these two?

    As a diver who dives with a $4000+ Planet Ocean, I'd like to add that the dive extension is not just useless for non-divers, but without additional tool-less micro adjustments it's useless period. Unless the thickness of your wetsuit just coincidentally happens to exactly match the diver extension length, you always would need to adjust both the extension and the micro adjustment together to get a good fit. My Planet Ocean 39.5mm (8800) didn't come with a dive extension. It did instead have two micro-adjustments. They had too little range to even fit my wrist, and there's no half-link out of the box to adjust properly. Dropped the bracelet in week one of owning it, and am wearing it on an Isofrane now. Much more comfortable, and fits perfectly over any wetsuit (or even drysuit with extra extension). Love the watch, but Omega needs to get their clasps right.

    I have the Seamaster Professional 300m reviewed here (blue lacquer dial) and a Rolex Datejust 36mm fitted with the 3135 movement which runs inside the Submariner reviewed here. My Datejust constantly loses 6 seconds per day. I can correct this error partially by leaving the watch dial facing up overnight, but very often forget to do so leading to an annoying loss of accuracy in a few days. The SMP on the other hand is amazingly accurate (at the most a second or two gained or lost in a day) whatever orientation I leave it in, overnight. I do not know whether this is an achievement of the co-axial escapement or any other reason. In my eyes, the SMP 300m is the superlative chronometer. No other complaints about the Datejust (or the SMP). They are both lovely watches. By the way I am a recreational diver, and wear my SMP in my dives as a stand by bottom timer. A 4000+ dollar watch cannot be allowed to relax in a hotel safe when its owner is underwater !!! It has to do it's job.

  • @jball1975
    @jball19755 жыл бұрын

    I have both. I prefer the Seamaster but with the adjustable clasp I purchased from an Omega Boutique. The clasp makes all the difference. Despite the glidelock clasp I feel like the Sub flops around on my wrist whereas the Seamaster stays in place and is very comfortable. The adjustable clasp on the Seamaster also allows for making adjustments without removing the watch and is easy to make adjustments quickly and easily and I feel is the superior clasp. You may have to spend money after the $4400 + tax on the Omega clasp but it is still significantly cheaper than the Rolex Submariner. Yes the Rolex is more refined but I feel the Seamaster is the better all around watch and the one I look forward to strapping on my wrist at the end of the day. I would never sell my Submariner because at the end of the day it still is an awesome watch not to mention its very hard to come by these days. I just wish the new Seamaster 2018 had the same dimensions. Now I just have to wait for a mid size (hopefully 40mm) to be released. BTW I agree, the Rolex is the better watch, just not my favorite of the two.

    I went to the mall Sunday with the wife and while the wife was shopping in the millennial mall in Orlando I checked out the watch stores. I decided to go to omega and eventually hit all the luxury brands while there. On camera I must have looked like I was scoping out the place. Anyways asked about the new version and if they have it. They said not for another month. But they said after a little research since the store had all pretty ladies who knew nothing about the product they were selling that new one will have micro adjustment. With the style of that bracelet and no tapering that makes it much more to my liking. I do prefer the bezel just a hair more on the omega. I like bezels that are hard to turn because somehow my more pronounced ones move even if they are tight.

    JustBlueFish Watch Reviews I’d say the P.O. is most comparable to the sub in terms of specs, especially the modern one with the adjustable clasp. The sea dweller/deep sea, as Rolex’s flagship dive models, I would say should only be compared to omegas top tier dive watch which is the PloProf. Just my opinion but that’s how I see the tiers across the two brands. I’d say there a larger percentage of people who are debating whether to get the P.O. or the sub than there are between getting the Seamaster and the sub. The price difference just puts them in different tiers in my opinion. Not saying plenty of people don’t own both the Seamaster and the sub, just that it’s less likely that the man who is thinking about maybe purchasing a Seamaster is choosing between that and a sub, than the man who is choosing between the P.O. and the sub if that makes sense? But like I say, just my opinion. Once again, great video guy keep up the good work. Big fan. I just purchased my first Rolex last week. A yachtmaster 116622 rhodium dial. Would love it if you could get one on the show and compare it to the sub. Either the sunburst blue or the rhodium. Best regards, Oli

    I’ve never understood all the hate that the helium escape valve gets. Aesthetically, I understand it’s not for everyone, but functionally why is it such a bad thing that Omega includes it? Who really cares if it’s a feature you’d never actually need? Wouldn’t it make sense that a company like Omega who wanted to design and market a watch for professional divers to design a feature on the watch that makes it functional for actual professionals who might use it? 🤷🏼‍♂️. The real question is how many people actually dive 1000 feet regularly with ANY of their dive watches (including submariners)? The Rolex Submariner pulverises this cheesy 90's re-edition of the Omega Seamaster. These two watches are not even in the same ballpark. A fairer comparison would have been to compare the Rolex Submariner date to a Planet Ocean and even then the Rolex would win because the Planet Ocean is way too thick and blingy compared to the most copied watch in the world. The Planet Ocean 2500D was the pinnacle of the PO line, since then Omega have lost the plot and tried to compete by just raising prices in line with Rolex.

Without the logos and screwing value (because I can afford them without needing to care about selling), the SMP 2018 is the better dive watch, period.

    The movement and micro adjustable clasp of Rolex is better than Omega, but the style is Omega win 🎉 Rolex 👏 I have this Seamaster for ten years ago.

    Good content but could use an update comparing current models. The ultimate tie-breaker? I can buy the Omega, including online, at MSRP, today, without the Rolex AD buffoonery, wait list tomfoolery, flipper-driven grey-market clownery.

    I think they are both great watches, the Rolex being more "tool" in appearance and the Omega more stylized, I do prefer the 2018 Omega with the wavy dial compared to this version. The Submariner is just a classic diver, certainly the most imitated watch ever. There is a price difference so would expect better build on the Rolex.

    I’m still on the fence with the 2018 model, I need to see it in person once they become more available. Something about the dial, I just don’t know.

    I like the extra detail, the one you reviewed looks a little flat on the dial on the Omega, I have only seen it for a few minutes in the hand, it does update the look for me, others may feel different, styling is pretty subjective, like you said none of these will use an expensive auto for actual diving, as a dressier watch the later model looks pretty cool in the flesh. I agree about the crown guards, but again the Omega is more stylized, and softer looking, rather than angular like the Rolex, I do prefer the Rolex in that regard.

    JustBlueFish Watch Reviews do you think the new wave dial takes away from the versatility (dress up/down) of the Omega. The flat gloss dial looks great in person. I’m torn because my AD offered me this Omega at 1k off retail, and I doubt the new version will have much play on the price...at least at first launch. Decisions, decisions.

    Just bought the Omega new from the Omega Boutique here in Atlanta, I hardly considered the Rolex. The price is artificially high, your paying for the snob appeal and the fact that most of the AD's didn't even have one to sell me. I will admit that the Bezel on the Omega is awful but I don't dive so it wasn't a factor. If I want to time things, like when I go to the races or other times I take one of my Breitling Chrono's. I notice here people mentioning the fact that the Omega movement is a modified 2892-A2. Well that for me was a selling point. My Breitling Chrono Cockpit has the same movement and its operated flawlessly with only two overhauls in 22 years. It was my daily driver for the first 15 years I had it. I also have a pre Co Axial 2892-A2 in my 18 year old Omega De Ville which was overhauled just once. So don't trash ETA top line movements modified by companies like Breitling and Omega. Again Rolex make great watch I just won't pay the snob premium the Omega is just as good in my opinion.

    Robert Sullivan Congrats on the new Omega. :) Personally I think that the bezel is very nice, at least on the blue 300M. It is very suttle and elegant with its somewhat faded insert. :)

    The right price for a Rolex Sub should be around $7000-7500, no more than that. Omega Seamaster is at right price.

    The takeaway for me is, without any history a Rolex a.d. won’t sell you a new Sub. Omega will sell you a Seamaster all day long. I like the new wavy dial.

    Great review lol even though you tried not to be bias, you still came off that way. The sub is far too plain. Even James Bond agrees, man's got style. To each his own, two titans of time.
