    They got so much right finally - 22mm lugs, looks great. Not as top heavy as deep sea. 3235 movement, 70 hours, magnetic resistant. Slightly smaller than the hefty deep sea. Red text is a signal to the original and very pretty. Their best sports watch in years.

    I also would agree with you on the use of a NATO strap on this particular watch. I owned a Deep Sea for a while and then got a pretty good deal on the Cameron D BLUE version, and while I loved the watch, I always felt the bracelet was a minor weakness. The 21mm lugs looked a little too thin on such a monstrous watch and I always felt it was a little lazy of Rolex to not develop a better 'proportioned' bracelet. The Deep Sea was also top heavy and I found a good high grade black rubber strap suited it well. This new Sea Dweller - Rolex has just tweaked the design, made the bracelet 1mm wider, and reduced the width of the watch by 1mm. It just shows that even very minor changes can have such a positive impact on a watch overall. I have mine ordered by the AD and I should get it in the next month or so all being well, I wont be wearing a nato on it for sure. I have read some complaints about the size increase from 40mm to 43mm, but I always felt a full on dive watch should be slightly larger than the Submariner, rather than just 'deeper' to accommodate the extra pressure of the water. I always liked that about the Deep Sea, but as I said - very top heavy watch and difficult to get under a shirt for instance. Its the best watch Rolex have made in a long time IMO and I think finally they have all the dimensions spot on - this is from a guy who has spent the last 20 years wearing Rolex sports watches. The red lettering is such a nice touch - its how the range started back in the 1960's - so it all feels very authentic to me. Been a bit disappointed with some of their watches recently, but this one is spectacular. Health to enjoy it Jack.

    spot on. I own the Deep Sea Cameron. I as well feel the bracelet could be a little wider. however, I don't find it top heavy. I do wear my watches tight tho. They got this new Sea Dweller perfect.

    Just a fantastic review. Best one I have seen. Great job. I keep coming back to this video over and over as I wait patiently and painfully for this watch to become available in my area. I have a larger wrist and I just think (for me) this is THE perfect watch. They just nailed it. The bracelet looks perfect. The width of the bezel looks just right for the 43 mm case size. The watch is thick and hefty, but not obnoxiously thick like the DSSD. I can't wait to try one on. Thanks for posting this Jack!

    Thank you for your great review. For me, it's the perfect Rolex Sport watch at the moment. The new movement is a great improvement (you can already feel it when adjusting the time or winding the crown). Another big improvement besides the perfect lugs and perfect size is the improvement of the pearl as well. In the submariner it sits higher but with the SD43 it sits much lower. Amazing watch!!!

    I too never liked the cyclops hence always wanted a sea dweller instead of a sub date. But after getting the SD43, I've learnt to embrace it and am loving the watch. I'm all for Rolex trying to make the 50th anniversary SD special by including the cyclops (since now possible due to tech advancement so it can withstand the pressure) and the red text (I am a sucker for the red text). I had a Wow moment when I first put the SD 43 on my wrist. Cannot imagine my life without it now!

    This is how a watch review should be done. I've always liked the Submariner but felt that at 40mm, it was a bit small for my wrist. The 43mm SD seems to have solved that but at the same time it seems a bit "tall" on the wrist. I imagine I'd get used to that though. With a 70 hour power reserve, the increased case diameter, the 50th anniversary SD looks like a certain winner. Again, great review and thanks Jack.

    DML Channel - Thank you for your thoughts. You'd definitely get used to the size - it's depth is actually the same as its predecessor and most of it is hidden underneath the case when on the wrist. I cannot see anyone being disappointed once they put one on. Let me know what you think if you treat yourself :)

    I was doing some research and it seems the SD43mm is just 2mm thicker than the Submariner (if my research is accurate, 15mm on the SD versus 13mm on the Sub). If true, a 50 Anniversary Sea-Dweller will be in my future.

  • @bobbydazzler1780

    @bobbydazzler1780

    DML Channel its riding tall on the wrist as it has a flat lug profile without curvature on a big watch Head. You don’t notice that on a sub as it’s smaller. The deep sea at 44mm rides taller still. By taller I mean that it will appear to float on the wrist with gaps under the lugs to the wrist. Unless you have a very big flat wrist of north of 8 inches.

  • @bobbydazzler1780
    @bobbydazzler17804 жыл бұрын

    Lots of positives. The negatives could include that the flat side profile doesn’t hug the wrist on such a big piece and the lugs would have benefitted from slight curvature. There’s fresh air under those flat lug ends to your wrist and this makes it look too big for you - although you are virtually perching the piece on your hand anyway. Worn loose as you have it this watch is going to be uncomfortable bouncing around playing sport. With the weight this will be an issue. Apart from those minor quibbles it’s a great watch all round.

    Hi Jack, very useful review, greatly appreciated! I'm on the list for this SD50, AD said she'd be able to get me one by XMas , which is lovely! Unfortunately, my wrist circumference is "only" 17cm, and probably closer to 16.5 in winter. Fortunately, I'm of a well-built stature - been going to the gym for years - and while my wrist is thin, my forearms aren't. Can I pull this off? I own a Breitling Superocean 42 which doesn't wear too big. Keen to hear your opinion. Thanks!

    Hi Shuigui, I absolutely believe you can pull one off on your size wrist. To be fair you’re not too far off my 17.78cm size wrist and this SD43 fits a treat. It can’t hurt to carry on with those push ups - they’ll keep the wrists and forearms solid and this heavy hitting diver will supplement that for sure. It’s truly a beautiful watch - I’m excited for you. Merry Christmas and enjoy it.

    Brilliant review and thanks for taking the time to take us through it in such detail. It would have been great to have included your wrist size prior to posting the video as it takes away somewhat from the experience. I will now be checking back to see if you have added it in description. I am dying to lay my eyes/hands on one so lucky you. Only other feedback is that it will great if you wore it properly and took the shots from different angles. It was resting above your wrist and on your hand so not a true reflection of a solid fitting. Anyway, thanks again and keep up the good work

I have an area of permanent rough skin below the knuckles where the crown on all my watches rubs slightly. Great video. Update since then on the cyclops. It’s been reported that due to the increase in size from 40 to 43, the movement was too small for the increased size. This caused the date window to sit awkwardly too far away from the edge of the watch. Adding the date magnifier gives the illusion of it being nicely placed on the dial. When looking at it without it, the date appears to sit way too far towards the middle if the watch. Hopefully my AD will call before I die so I can have my very own!! Love it. Great video.

  • @Brutelson

    @Brutelson

    6 жыл бұрын

    Ash Burton - The Red SeaDweller will definitely be the better investment. The Blue SD is relatively attainable where as if you’re not already on a waiting list for the Red SD then you realistically won’t get one. It’s also a 50th Anniversary. If the 50th Submariner is anything to go by - I’d estimate that in 10-15 years time your Red SD investment will have at minimum doubled. The new updated Blue SD released at Basel 2018 will in my opinion cannibalize the previous model with the inferior bracelet. So we may see the investment for these either slightly subside/hold rather than increase. Hope this helps.

    Ash Burton - That’s fantastic news on the Red SD - very happy for you. I can safely say that you’re going to like it much, much more than the Blue SD. That’ll be a few pints you’ll owe your mate! Although slightly annoying about the warranty card, a 12 month wait on a watch you’re planning to keep is a small sacrifice to appease the AD. I was spared this rule when I got mine last year but they did insist on taking off all the plastic which was totally fine with me as I’ve been wearing it constantly ever since.

    Big, heavy, this is basically a great beach & leisure watch which means weekends and holidays. I have a SuperOcean Abyss for that : same size, automatic escape valve, 1500 meters, as attractive, a third of the price and I'm perfectly happy with an ETA movement. I much more prefer a 14060, at least I can wear this on a more everyday basis, like some of the thin sword-hands Seamasters.

    I disagree - the SD "50th" is a perfect everyday watch and if it was my only watch I'd be extremely happy. I love Breitling, however the SuperOcean Abyss is an ugly dive watch and has nothing on this SD (except a better price tag. This SD's movement, steel, finishing, bezel, bracelet....need I go on....are all better than the Breitling. It is an unfair comparison - totally different leagues. The only watch worthy of being labelled a rival to this SD, in my opinion, is the Grand Seiko SBGA029 "Spring Drive Diver". As for the Rolex 14060 - nice watch, but again a futile comparison. It is an older Rolex which is pre-ceramic with an inferior and archaic movement. This SD is the new Rolex Professional model people have been waiting for. It is such a shame that many watch enthusiasts won't be able to enjoy it due to the availability and super-inflated pre-owned prices. I wish you well and please don't be offended by my disagreeing with you. I hope you to get to see one of these in the flesh. If you do, let me know what you think.

    I love my DEEPSEA first of all and it's not heavy or big if you have a big wrist like me. With that being said I do like the 50th anniversary and I really like the new date window just like the Submariner but it makes It look just like that the most common Rolex on the market "stainless steel submariner"..

    Hi Alam, I chose the Red Sea-Dweller because the proportion and size is better, it's more desirable and exclusive (factually and personally), it's the nicer looking watch, black is much more compatible for every occasion use than green, the 3235 movement in the Sea-Dweller is absolutely superb and better in every way and on a personal level I love the history behind the Sea-Dweller. If you have the opportunity to get the Sea-Dweller at RRP or best price possible - do it without hesitation. You'll never need or want another watch. Good luck!

    I agree Young, I own both the DSSD-Cameron and this new 43mm Sea Dweller, I don't find the DSSD top heavy , etc. They use a titanium back and that lightens the Deep Sea a lot. Also, I wear my watches on the tighter side on my wrist, so find no real weight difference between the DSSD and the new Sea Dweller.

    Great review, thanks for sharing. I have to say I fully agree with your impression and I'll even go further. I was lucky enough to purchase this watch two weeks ago at my AD, being first on the waiting list. It blew me away. It's big on my 6.9in / 17.5cm wrist but not overly so, no overhang. It oozes masculinity without overdoing it. Larger case, dial (now 29mm), bezel, hour hand, bracelet (22mm). Tapered lugs and larger bracelet help with balance and proportion. Now at last with the first 3235 movement in a sports model. Then there's the red lettering to make it a little bit more special and remind us of its heritage. I just love everything about this watch. I paid retail for it and I did it gladly. Such a purposeful looking toolwatch that doesn't need fat ugly lugs nor unbearably thick and top heavy case to make it look muscular. Rolex nailed it on the head. It is the perfect sports watch to me. I also own a Yacht-Master platinum dial, got it just before it was discontinued in summer 2016. Compared to the new Sea-Dweller, the YM almost feels dainty and feminine, by today's standard, a much thinner and dressier piece for sure. They complement eachother rather well, one being bold and beautiful and the other refined and elegant if I may say so. I might sell the YM as I think this Sea-Dweller is probably all the Rolex I'll ever want. In fact I'm tempted to drastically consolidate my collection after this and come closer to the one watch man I used to be long ago. Yeah, this is how good this Sea-Dweller is. Its the Super Submariner I've always wanted.

I feel that a huge part of my watch addiction has been cured because of this piece. I still love watches but I have no desire to obtain another Diver. Everything I need and want in a watch is right here 😘

    neil piper Yes the 44mm SOS is a very handsome diver. My collective negative opinion on all current steel sports Rolex watches is that there is no bevelled edges anymore. There absolutely used to be but not anymore since the introduction of the ceramic models. Puzzling because Tudor still bevel their cases which definitely makes the finishing of their cases look better and crisper.

    Lugs are too wide for the bracelet, Rolex should have tapered it off better. The end links do not sit flush with the case and the watch looks blocky on your wrist. It is definitely too big and needs to be paired down a bit. The Tudor Black Bay (especially the new steel bezel) is a better watch.

  • @Brutelson

    @Brutelson

    Thank you for your feedback, however I 100% disagree with absolutely everything on your post. Rolex have rectified ALL the mistakes they made with the DSSD bracelet and created what is now a superb example which is proportionate, tapers beautifully with much better designed solid end links and has all the micro adjustment innovations to boot. I love the original Tudor Black 2824 - superb watch and I'll never part with mine. The 'Black' Black Bay 2824 is the 'investment' one to grab (made for a very short period and limited production). I don't mind the second generation BBs but they have nothing on the originals. As for the new Tudor Black Bay with Steel Bezel.... Personally, I think its another fail by Tudor. Its very reminiscent of the Hydronaut II - just less ugly. I predict that this new model will be a major flop which will be unfortunate as Tudor has had a bad couple of years lately. I still love the brand but they are in danger of flooding the mid-tier market with superfluous and inspirational models. These are just my opinions, Mac - each to their own. I do recommend that you see a Sea-Dweller 50th in person - I think you'll surprise yourself :)

  • @Brutelson

    @Brutelson

    7 жыл бұрын

    Mac Daddy - At 23:37 my wrist is arched at an angle to over-emphasise the case depth. In reality and when worn normally, the heft is disguised a lot underneath the watch. In my opinion, this enhances my appreciation and love of how well Rolex have designed this watch aesthetically. Also (and I mean no disrespect at all Mac), what were you expecting?? Bottom line: this is a Sea-Dweller - with a new and incredibly durable movement and a depth rating of 4000ft! I am genuinely surprised that it's not thicker. If you want slim - stick with the Submariner. I great watch and will always set the ' gold standard' when it comes to a quality, bullet-proof dive watch. The Submariner will never be beaten for what it is and has stood for all these years. However...... If you want something a little bit more special with it's own history (albeit nicely connected to the Submariner) and significance in the Rolex Diver range - I vote a Sea-Dweller hands down and by a '50' mile stretch! The 50th SD for me is almost perfect in every way shape and form. As I said, I have made my peace with that damn cyclops ;) All the best my friend!
