    Here is your tie-breaker. Your Explorer II can be used as a compass during daylight hours. If the GMT hand corresponds to your local time zone, point the hour hand towards the sun, and the GMT hand will point north if you are in the northern hemisphere. If you are in the southern hemisphere, the GMT hand will point south.

    Fun vid - thanks. I just got the black dial Explorer 2, I think it’s a great choice if you are a one watch guy as it’s a little more dressy than the polar. Not as dressy as a sub, but subs are everywhere. I like the slightly bigger size of the Explorer 2 as well (I’m 6’2) - my brother who is 5’10 seems to rock his sub perfectly. The black dial has a bit more of a 70s vibe, polar feels more modern I think.

    Maximum depth reached by a SCUBA diver is about 330 meters. That's a world record. Recreational SCUBA divers have a maximum depth of 18 meters for Open Water, 30 meters for Advanced, and 40 meters for Deep certified divers. Technical divers may go down to 80 or 90 meters, but exceeding 100 meters is rare. Your gas consumption is insanely high at that depth, so you need to carry a lot of cylinders (with special mixes) in order to dive that deep. The depth rating for Rolex watches is mostly down to the case's resistance to buckling. Not so much the gaskets. All Rolex watches use the same gaskets (with the exception of twin and triplock crowns). The Submariner was tested to 1000 meters, and the seals held up perfectly. Only the case back buckled and destroyed the movement. All Rolex watches are tested to 125% of their depth rating and need to remain watertight and fully operational in order to pass. I'm sure they can handle a lot more than 125%. You do need to get the watch checked for water resistance regularly (say once every year or two years) to guarantee it is still watertight. Rubber seals get compressed, dry out, and deteriorate.

    I own both as well. My Explorer 2 is the older 16570 and wears much smaller than the new 42mm model. It flys so far below the radar I don’t think I’ve had a single comment on it in 13 years of daily wear. The Sub on the other hand gets a lot of comments. It’s the definitive Rolex. The Sub is more like jewelry - you hit that nail on the head. I like them both for different reasons but if I could only have one it would be my Explorer 1!

    Thank you for your great reviews on the Explorer 2. I just bought it myself and I have a question. I like to use straps on my watches but when I installed leather straps on the Explorer 2 the strap gets scratched by the case due to (1) proximity of the lung holes to the case and (2) very sharp edges of the case at the lung space. Do you have this problem? Is there a remedy? Perhaps it is possible to smoothen the sharp edges by a watchmaker without affecting the use of the bracelet later on? Any advice would me most welcome.

  • @cheynewalls

    @cheynewalls

    9 ай бұрын

    Thank you, Yes I have the same problem, but it doesn't bother me to scratch the back of the watch when I'm changing out straps. However if you do want to avoid scratches just put a bit of painters tape (that blue tape) on and around where you sit the strap. Use a razor blade to cut carefully away from the lug space, or before putting the tape on the watch, cut out perfect pieces to fit on the lugs. This works great for me when I'm changing out straps on other peoples watches. Cheers

  • @mgguzmanb

    @mgguzmanb

    9 ай бұрын

    Thank you for the response. I actually meant something different- not about the scratches i could make with the spring bar tool when installing the strap. The problem is that after installing the leather strap - because it is very close to the case and the case edges are super sharp - when using the leather strap it gets damaged very rapidly by the friction with the watch. It is an Explorer specific issue that it seems other also have. It happens with many straps (not all, but most) and only with this watch. I just have not figure out a way to prevent it besides putting tape at the lugs what is not the most stylist approach.

That's the main use for the modern diver, to remind you about the time left in the parking meter. 😂 That is, until they figure out how to allow your phone app to add money like Canada (I doubt city of Laguna Beach do that and lose a chunk of city revenue).

    Errrr, no SIR! a rather unjust comparison from especially the same maker: The SUBMARINER is purpose built as you know, for reasoned deep dives...while the explorer II is definitively designed for land roving.....hence the 24 hour register. The comparison could have been between the immediate previous maxi0case SUB and this one...then the defined differences can be more conclusive. IF Rolex want the Explorer to go 300m, they could, but then it becomes more useful than the SUB.....consequently affect desirability....conversely, if Rolex wanted, they could easily stick the sky-dweller 24 hr readout on the SUB....then that too would make obsolete the demand for the Exp II, in exactly the same way Apple do not do imac with touch screens or no one will find the ipad necessary! I love your content, my first day of watching....and it is great because it extracts my passion for the said watches! And oh, this was written even before I saw the scores....bavo to me...LOL.....The exp II is a GMT II equivalent with a fixed bezel....that is travel ultimate!

    It was just a fun exercise, I mostly did because I had gotten hundreds of comments asking me what watch I would get, the Rolex Explorer II or Submariner. Yes, they are designed for two different things, but there is A LOT of overlap for people and which watch should they buy. I had that same dilemma when I was looking to get my fist tool watch. So think of this video as more which watch would suit you better, not a head to head watch match up. As you saw with the final scorning.

    The fact that you would put water resistance (which both watches have although at different depths)above a GMT function, when the vast majority of people will not need as much water resistance as a Submariner provides, proves to me you have no idea what you're talking about. Most people, at some point in their lives, will be out of the time zone they live in, but probably never 200 meters under water. Never mind how rare a true GMT function is compared to water resistance. Your scoring is totally ridiculous. I will not be watching any more of four videos for watch advice.

  • @cheynewalls

    @cheynewalls

    28 күн бұрын

    Well I’m sure as you know, water resistant is a lot different than just a depth rating. Jumping into a pool puts about a rating of a 100 meter depth pressure onto a watch. Like I showed in the chart on this video. Therefore the Rolex Submariner is completely safe for 99% of water activity. I love my GMT function, but everyone today has a cell phone to help with a different time zone. That is why I rated the water resistance a bit higher.
