Marc, I have an Polar Explorer II. Bought it from an AD about 8 months ago. Yes, I enjoy the legibility and the look of the dial. Unfortunately I scratched the polished side of one lug😢. One thing I don’t like, it runs 5-6 seconds fast a day. Is this normal? My Pelagos runs about 2 seconds fast per day. I enjoy the channel, great vids!!

Look back through my last dozen videos because I show you exactly how to get the scratch out of the polished side. 5-6 seconds fast is NOT normal. Take it in to the AD. It’s under warranty for 5 years.

I have the black dial, and not only is it one of my everyday pieces, it is my hiking/outdoor watch. At first I too was concerned about the bezel, but so far it has gone undamaged despite heavy use (there are small scratches elsewhere). In the end, I'm glad to use it as intended, and in the future I look forward to it being a piece that I can use to fondly remember the adventures it has accompanied me on.

I discovered by experience, that if I wear my watch bracelet or strap a little loose, I get less scratches. I guess because it moves before it gets scratches. Most of my scratches are scuffing on buckles from the stainless steel table tops used here everywhere in Saigon. Congrats on a million views, I was excited when my channel hit a thousand. I can't even imagine a million.

Hi Mark i just picked up a black dial 42mm explorer II pre owned. I almost went for white but last moment went black, the orange hand again the black is amazing but do agree white dual is more readable. I already had a sub 16610 and the.42mm explorer is different character to the older watch, however im totally loving the Explorer i think its so underrated and i love the older retro feel the orange hand gives off also. Plus buying pre owned it was much cheaper then a gmt2c, in some ways the explorer II is the thinking mans gmt. Also it was down to your videos a few weeks ago that i purchased.mine and im so happy with it.

Late to the party, I finally bought a Polar 16570 Explorer II as an everyday "beater" Rolex. It just may be the perfect do-everything watch. The problem is, I've developed the same fear of scratching the bezel and the bracelet. So much for a beater watch!

Rollie Pollie, that’s good. Anyways, the walking thru doors horological syndrome is the body’s nature defense mechanism against scratching your watch. Embrace it!!! The Explorer II is likely due for a Geneva sized iteration come Basel World 2019, though there were many rumors that was planned for 2018 that didn’t materialize. ... Speaking of steel bezel durability, I once had a Rolex exec tell me they would never go with ceramic (or rotating ) as they don’t want it to compete directly with their GMT Master II model. Makes sense I guess. One suggestion I offered was Tungsten Carbide for the bezel material as it is highly resistant to scratching. It adds to overall mass which is something to consider but let’s see what they come up with. Either way, I’m enjoying my Rollie Pollie as it’s firmly secured in the weekly wrist rotation. PS. Congrats on the 2M views, long time listener, first time commenter....

Hello Marc, Received my Polar November 5th and it's still on my wrist. I have a SD4K ceramic, 41mm Air King, Sub, etc., but this one is turning out to be my favorite of the bunch due to the striking dial, ease of reading, and comfortable wear. The underside of the bracelet is getting a nice coating of scuffs (no dents so far) and personally I really don't care! At age 60 I intend to wear the piss out of it since after all... it's a tool watch right? My younger son loves this watch and it might be his one day, but it will be a well worn example!!! Nice job on the video and couldn't agree more with your comments. Just hit the subscribe button. :)

Scratches on watches are like door dings in a brand new car. Once it fades a bit in your memory, the event isn't as traumatic. Maybe a self-inflicted door ding would be better than letting some stranger do it first. I have never been over-protective of a watch. Just wear it and enjoy it.

Just a tool watch - it's meant to pick up a few scratches over its life. I've got the black dial version and I've found that careful light application of a cape cod 'polishing cloth for fine metals' will buff those bezel scratches right out with zero evidence of the encounter. My 216570 has garnered most of my wrist time this year.

Marc, you must be a multi-millionaire with all the new Rolex's you buy. I own 6 however they are mostly pre-owned 90's models with the exception of a 16610 Sub I picked up new in 2010. I do own a polar explorer II but an 1994 S serial 16570. What's shocking is the tritium lume is still quite legible after my eyes adjust to the dark. I normally sleep with my watches and woke up 4:00 am and it was still easily legible. Amazing given tritium's half life of 12.5 years. One would assume it would be dead given it's 24 years old. There is something extremely appealing about tritium dial Rolex's to me. Makes me want to buy a U serial sports model as it was the last year before they switched to luminova and then superluminova.

Dick Longmire 12.5 yr half life does NOT mean it’ll be dead in 25. It means it’ll use up half of its brightness in 12.5 years. Then 12.5 years later it’ll use up half that brightness (now down 75%). Then in 12.5 more years, half again (used up 87.5%) and so on and so forth.

It can expand on the “feel the steel” idea. Last thing, I think the Explorer 2 is still pretty tool watch-y, and when I get one (with a black dial) my bezel will be well loved/scarred.

Actually she didn’t say guarantee. But she had one in stock for another client and let me try it on. She said I would be next in-line and should be here in Jan. The only reason I would flip it is because I would want to wear it as much as possible with out having to worry about scratches and having it kept in prestige condition. I would love to have the Batman to wear daily. But I couldn’t see my self really enjoying it with out having to worry about dinging it up.

@@marcgoldbergdogtrainer i think more batman's around than explorers around and the scene about the explorer 2 has been changing a lot last half year. Firstly, you could literally buy them in any AD you wanted.. Nowadays they become hard to find, the price jumped with about 650-900 euro on the GM since 6 months for polar 42mm. and the advertising campagne of Rolex with Ed Viesturs made it more and more popular. In fact i would advice, if you like to flip it over to keep it 1.5/2 years more. I have the feeling, that now they becoming so scarce they might be discontinued next Basel, i find it suspicious i think they try getin rid of explorer 2 stock Now make a video with Explorer 2 discontinued?

  • @joelopic

Agreed, the bezel is far to scratch prone. 904 stainless is a softer compound and not very resistant although easier to polish. But the bezel can't be polished because of its brushed grain and black numerals. The polished sides scratch just by cleaning the watch with a soft cloth. It's ridiculous. The watch should be all brushed and have a ceramic bezel despite the history and heritage of the Explorer. It just doesn't work any more. The Other bad thing about it is the tapering of the bracelet right down to 16mm at the clasp is an aesthetic nightmare. Clasp is tiny. Why not just use the Submarines bracelet. It's not that hard Rolex!! And now in 2022. Nothing changes. Maybe they will finally get it right in about 5 years. I will sell mine and buy one when they do get it right. Nice dial though. Although the deep sea is a larger case. The dial on the Explorer is actually wider. The bezel is thinner.

Yes: This is the best watch for all-round visibility Rolex makes. It's nice to only have to take a flash look at my wrist and instantly get the time. No hunting on my dial, just always there. And yes, Rolex has gone from a tool watch to a luxury watch. If you to go back to the 1960's and look at the different tool watches, the price of a Rolex is just a little more than say a Longine's. Now a Rolex is 6 times the price of the Longine. But here might be a better question. Can an expensive watch even be a tool watch? In my mind no, unless you are not working with any tools like say in a laboratory or possibly in a cockpit of a plane or helicopter. Then....?

More versatility equals more of a tool watch. Even 32xx series is 10x more shock resistant and nearly impervious to magnetism compared to last generation movements, there’s more but you can access this info yourselves. Love your channel and that’s tool not luxury to me.

But luxury watches for collectors is where they are at as a company now. What serious diver is going to risk dinging thousands of dollars worth of James Cameron Deep Sea when he can wear a more accurate dive computer instead? Ditto the current Sub. That same diver will wear a G-Shock for exactly the same reason. The Explorer 2 for polar explorers? Nah, that will be G-Shock also...Rolex knows this well of course. Other watchmakers must envy how well Rolex knows the customers it caters for...

@Some PhaggotThey used to do a white dial one with orange markers that was pretty cool I think, ref. 116400...less garish than the current one..

Marc, your fear of scratching the bezel is pretty pathetic.
