Wow, all that you said about eye contact just makes so much sense, especially with the triangle technique- everyone's always saying have good eye communication but never go through the awkward bits about when and how to look away. Thank you for this

Thanks Ollie, highlighting the issues AND explaining why it is important to do them clears a lot of things up. Although it might take more effort to prepare, I'd appreciate it if you continue to explain why this issue is important/why you should do it if you feel an issue is particularly important in future interview related interviews. It makes it a lot clearer what we should consider when giving a good answer. The example role play will be an excellent idea, depending on time constraints you could do a voice over again pinpointing what was good, potential pitfalls, and what could be improved. Appreciate all the hard work you do with all the time constraints you have.

Hi Ollie, now that interviews are being held online for international students, how do you suggest navigating through that (now that natural things like shaking hands etc cannot be done)? Do I still pretend to shake hands or something? And also about making eye contact, because to make eye contact i'd have to be looking at the camera or else it'll look like i'm looking away to the person on the other side, but then I wouldn't know whether I'm making too direct eye contact if I'm looking at the camera

Hey Ollie thank you for taking the time to make all these videos, ur journey has been very inspiration and helpful as I am currently in the 2020 entry cycle. While doing interview preparation I feel like a lot of questions can be scenario based (e.g. colleague talking about patient rudely, consultant comes in drunk, member of PBL team not doing any work). I felt these are like the UKCAT SJT scenarios and I am just not sure what is considered the ‘right’ approach to deal with these situations and when is it appropriate for me to escalate to a more senior level. Do you have any advice/resources/books that you would recommend?

I think a lot of them are mostly applied common sense - focus always has to be on patient safety etc. Good Medical Practice is a great place to start (GMC website) as well as any simple introduction to medical ethics. Calling for help is as simple as - if I am not capable of reliably accomplishing the task or lack the knowledge/experience it takes to do it properly, I need to call for help. It's not a hard and fast rule, that's the thing! Call for help when your competence runs out or it would be reasonable to do so.

Thank you for your reply, please keep up with the videos, really liked your series on interviewing students from a range of different backgrounds before they perused medicine. Your videos have definitely gave me some assurance and lessen my anxiety during the stressful revision/application period All the best for the future :)

It might seem a strange question but if, in the scenario, the actor is supposed to be a good friend, would it be acceptable to give them a hug to comfort them if you were breaking bad news, for example? That naturally plays a large part in the way I express empathy to friends (and even to patients/strangers if appropriate) but I know it would probably be inappropriate in an interview situation. Obviously I’d read the room but just wanted to know if it was a big no-no 🤷🏼‍♀️

I honestly think play it by ear as you say, but I'd lean towards not hugging. Really depends - if your role is meant to to be anything professional I wouldn't hug because that would not be appropriate, but if it's just you as a person and that's what you would do naturally then I'd say go for it! :)
