Roland VH-13 and CY5 hats operated by an FD8 Pedal on the TD-50X

File this under “who knew?”
Context: I’ve been playing Vdrums for 25+ years. Currently using a TD50X with a VH13 hat. Lately, I’ve opted to use acoustic hats with my kit simply because 1) the VH13’s can’t compete with real hats and 2) I’m not convinced the new digital hats are worth $1K as a sizable improvement vs. my VH13’s.
But in case I wanted/needed Vdrum hats, I snuck a CY5 pad under my acoustic hats and put an FD8 controller next to my DW’s hat pedal.
Here’s the WOW…today I stumbled onto a combo that (for now) is blowing my mind! I put my VH13’s back on the DW hat stand, but happened to only connect the hat pad and left the HHC cable connected to the FD8. OMG!! The hat came alive!! IMO, the CY5 pad is not sensitive enough to make a really good hat. And the VH13 has some open/close sluggishness that I despise, and is sometimes clunky when I’m riding with my foot or want clean foot chicks.
With this new combo of VH13 and FD8, I seem to get the best of both worlds: great articulation, from open to close from the hat pad, and ultra-fast response from the FD8 foot pedal. I know Luke/eDrum Workshop uses something similar, albeit with a Yamaha 13” hat pad. But I would’ve never thought of trying out the VH13/FD8 combo.
Again, who knew?
PS - I’m fickle,….I’m sure this combo will last a few days until I throw my acoustic hats back on the set. For now, mind blown!!

Very nice, SIr! May I ask why you opted to control the VH13 with an FD8 - instead of using its own bottom controller ?

Thanks for listening. Please read my description above where I explain how this happened. I’m always exploring diff things with my set-up, and this was a pleasant surprise. Hope this answers your question.

Thanks for sharing! Could I ask you a couple of questions? Are you installing just the top part of the VH-13? Or are you installing both bottom and top cymbal but not engaging the spring/clutch on your DW Stand? Are you choosing the VH-13 as your trigger within the TD-50X? Are you, or can you still setup offset on the VH-13? Or is it not necessary when connecting the HHC Cable to the FD8? Thanks for your responses!

I’m using both top & bottom pads from the 13. I lowered the clutch so the top hat sits on the bottom. Don’t think that matters since the FD8 is the HHC, but it gives the hats a better & true 'closed hat' feel without excessive cymbal sway. I realized today that yesterday when I shot the vid, I had the trigger type as CY5 because that’s what I was using for my main eHat. I changed the trigger to VH13 today. Now this set-up works even better than yesterday!

Hi, i am about to buy a TD-07KVX and if i'm understanding right i would be able to connect an fd-9/8 type pedal to something like the vh-10? would you mind confirming this? would you do this by connecting the cable to the pedal rather than the "bottom part" of the hi-hat? Thanks a lot for your help.

That’s correct. When you plug the HHC (hi hat control) cable into the FD pedal, it overrides the VH10’s controller and acts as your open/close pedal. For better playability, be sure to have your top hat pad of the VH10 lowered all the way down and tighten the clutch so that the top hat is only wobbling as much as you want it to. I did switch my VH13 hats back to using it on a regular open/close hat stand and not using my FD pedal, but if you own an FD pedal, it’s worth experimenting to see what feels and performs best for how you play

I bought a used FD-8 after watching this video and maybe the pedal is bad, but this was NOT my experience on the TD-50 w/ VH-13. The force needed to close the hat was crazy, and I was only getting chicks with MAXIMUM velocity, basically just stomping on the pedal. It also took a ton of force on the pedal to get the hat to play the closed sound. Were there any module settings you tweaked to get the smooth playing sounds in the video? I'm thinking this pedal might be a lemon, as well. I also hate the sluggishness of the VH-13 on my hat stand, so I was hoping this would be a good workaround! I'm def going to keep trying, and might buy a brand new FD-8 just to see if this used one was bad.

Sorry to hear that. Maybe it’s your pedal, although it might be fixable. I used the standard connection HHC cord from my module with the FD8. My VH13’s are closed tight and the arrow on the top piece and bottom pad are aligned. I use the clamp Roland ships with the 13 to keep the hats from spinning on the hat, and my hat rod is tightened all the way. I calibrated my hats. There is a setting under Mixer, I believe F4, that allows you to adjust the chick volume of the hat. My FD8 has never been moved out of my house, and I’ve never adjusted it, so it’s literally like a brand new pedal. If none of what I wrote here helps, I’d take a look at the pedal. I don’t recall if you can adjust the height of the pedal, or maybe take a look at the spring? Hope this helps

@@dennisagresti9367 Thanks! I didn't think to calibrate the hats, I definitely should have done that. I do think the pedal might just be too old and used, so after I try the calibrations I'm going to see about grabbing a new one instead of used. Thanks again for the response, I really appreciate it! I've let my left foot hat work really fall off because I just hate the way the VH-13 feels on multiple different stands, so I've just focused exclusively on double bass chops the last several years. The FD-8 feels like the perfect fix for my use case, if I can get it to work!

@@Onikage Quite frankly, I’ve been using my VH13’s on a DW stand ever since posting this video. I did, however, try my FD8 with my 13’s over the past day and it worked perfectly, same as this video showed. For my taste, I simply prefer the feel of the 2-piece VH13’s on my DW5000 hat stand. With my 50X, the VH13’s work REALLY well! I tried out the digital VH14D hats, and they’re simply not better enough vs my 13’s to justify the cost, so I’m staying (for now) with my 13’s, and I occasionally swap out my Roland hats for acoustic hats when I want the feel & performance of real hats.

@@dennisagresti9367 I appreciate the detailed response, and you trying out the FD-8 again! It's gotta be either the calibration or a bum pedal I think. I have a DW remote stand right now since I've gotten used to my hats in a 12 o clock position, and I think that contributes to the heavy, disconnected feel I get with the hat pedal I currently have. I need to try a 'normal' hat stand again, but the cost for a good one just to try it out is daunting right now.
