Indeed. I've owned 3 101's and loved them, absolutely adore and respect the epic sounds and records that created the foundation for house and techno in the 80's and 90's, but they all failed due to age and light build quality. Owning one at home is one thing but taking them and the others from that era on tour is another. One drop or pothole or bump and they break

Agreed, especially considering how ridiculously overpriced vintage gear is these days. I have an SH101 I inherited from a friend who passed away, and while I love it for both the sound and sentimental reasons, it would simply would not be worth the price to buy it today when this much less expensive clone gets it so right (obviously collectors are going to want an original, but for performers I would not hesitate to recommend the MS101 over the SH101. When you buy vintage gear, you're also buying decades of potential wear and tear.

@@synthetic24 the original 808 sounds thin and unconvincing. What you hear on records is the result of added compression/limiter to make the kick and snare thicker. Did you listen to the same test here? The only major difference here is the filter wobble which is a symptom of failing circuits. It’s notable that only the sh-101 player was able to knock the sound test out of the park. And no, if Roland “did it right” we’d have an all-analog synth. Not a vst plugin in a cheap enclosure.

I design analog and plugin compressors and eq's, so analyzing synth sounds is new to me. I heard the subtle differences, but the only difference that mattered to me (because I *felt* it) was the wobbly-ness of the filter when sweeping resonances over harmonics. Calling it 'wobbly' was an amazing observation that would've exceeded my ability to quantify or describe, but I know I loved the vibe of it.

@@theothertonydutch Totally agree. Tolerances in electronic components back then were generally in the 5% range, worse again if you looked at only Capacitors. Theres actually a lot of swing in 5%. Nowadays tolerances of 1% to 0.1% are more standard, as manufacturing techniques got better and we moved to SMD components. Technically speaking, science wins here. If I emulate a circuit perfectly, there can only be one outcome. The only difference you should hear will be tolerances.

I've heard quite a few comparisons where they do sound slightly different, but I think this is often because many people are simply putting the controls in the same place and comparing the sound, rather than tweaking the controls to match the sound. I think you did a great job of actually matching their sounds. I think for 99.9% of people, they sound "close enough." The other .1% probably does notice subtle differences because they're THAT familiar with the sound. And that's awesome, I personally think in certain cases the SH sounds SLIGHTLY better... but to me it's not worth the 4x price increase, let alone the hassle of dealing with vintage gear issues. Now, I'd personally love to learn how to repair and modify vintage synths, especially because of the broken HS-60 that is leaning against the wall in my spare bedroom, but unfortunately I've never been able to find anyone willingly sharing any information online about vintage synth repair. If I ever learn how to figure it out for myself, you can bet I'll be making videos if possible to help other people learn more. I don't want these things to completely die off because the people who could repair them refused to share the knowledge.

This is a great video - it seems Behringer really did come very close to the SH-101 sound, but... I think the portamento feature (glossed over at the beginning the video) is one of the main things techno producers want, and the MS doesn’t do it right (yet). The lack of an unconditional “always on” glide mode means you can’t spontaneously add some “rubber” to your sequence while it’s playing back. Also, I found the glide knob on the MS-101 goes from “instant” (no glide) to “a bit too slow” - it is obviously a digital control. As it is though, the SH-101 can do much faster portamento than the MS. Hopefully Behringer will resolve these discrepancies in a firmware update! Thanks for the comparison.

There is just something about the oscillator and filter which sound so pleasing to my ears. Can’t wait to grab one of these. Sounds more than close enough for my ears. With JV-1080's catching fire from shitty capacitors that are finally popping, and various other vintage gear reaching the end of their 30-year lives. At $300 for one or $600 for two...you know you get at least another 20 years and you could keep one boxed and shelved as a back-up if the first one fries and consider it a 40-60 year sound investment. Me personally? I'm lucky if I have another 20 years in my life, so the extra $400 I just don't see the appeal. There's tons of issues with chips going bad on older gear across all companies. These replicas/clones/wtf-evers not only allow for an affordable entry for those of us who can't afford to or generally can't justify dumping that kind of money on a piece of vintage gear, nor want to get involved in the immediate upkeep that often comes with said gear. In perfect conditions an SH-101 should last nearly forever. That means never having a single power fluctuation, no gigging, no smoke, rare dust, and only run for as long as it's rated for on the components. How many SH-101's out there have been in such perfect conditions? One? Maybe 2? Pretty much if isn't unopened, it's lifetime is unknown and being 30 years now, it's sitting in it's nursing home. @@s90210h Given the build quality of the Deepmind, a follow up could be due in three to four years. (A friend's Deepmind has sliders and an encoder that create ghost values out of nowhere, without touching them. They also make wild jumps from low to high values upon just touching them. This after two years of light use. Programming it is an aggravating experience!)

Yes, the Roland will last longer... but you can almost buy a brand new MS with a warranty for what it costs to repair a SH. Or, spend the same amount of money on 5 MS's instead of 1 SH, and put the others in storage. When your first MS breaks when out of warranty, take one out of storage and so on and so on.

Hi Loopop. Love your videos, especially the comparison ones such as this. I was wondering why the Roland Boutique was left out of this comparison and the other concerning the 303. The reason I am asking is because I feel my true choice is actually between these Behringers and the Roland Boutiques ( I can’t speak for others here but I certainly can’t afford the original models ). I find the 303 comparison had room the TB-03 in there because of the more limited nature of 303 usage. 👍👍👍 Fun stuff!

  • @loopop

Thanks very much! I agree that it would have been great to compare the Boutique too but unfortunately I don't have one and couldn't get it in time (for the 303 either). Regarding the 101 boutique, I tried it once standalone and I think it sounds great. Since it's polyphonic I'm sure any nuanced differences would be irrelevant compared to the flexibility of being polyphonic and I'd go with it unless you're an "analog purist"

Hey! Does anyone know if there's a way to quantize the triggering of another saved sequence whilst playing a previous one? That is, whilst you're playing one sequence, are you able to then choose another one that will play after the final step of the previous pattern has finished, instead of immediately when you trigger the pattern? The above description is how the TD-3 works and I wonder if there is a mode to do the same thing on the MS-101. This is with the intention of choosing between different patterns during live performance. Thanks!

Coupla Behringer ADA-8000's here, six years old. One is completely dead, the other is dying. Both always ran very hot. Both have scratchy pots, these days you have to work the hell out of them to get any audio at all. Above 3/4 preamp gain, you might as well have a fuzzbox in the chain. They were cheap, they worked well til they quit or started screwing up, and now.... I have a fair bit of critical wiring passing thru where a dead device used to live, soooi.. I can spend ANOTHER $200 on a new and improved box that is likely to die before I do... or, rewire a big piece of my rig, or, just leave the hole and work around it. Thanks Uli. I knew I was was buying low end, no sweat, I don't always need great conversion. I DIDN'T KNOW I was only renting low end, that they would die before I even finished wiring the rig. The Octapre I bought at the same time cost $600, sounds good, the pots aren't scratchy, way less distortion at high fain and... ...it STILL WORKS FINE.

Well, I completely failed the blind test. Thought I was hearing different ones when it was really the same one, and vice versa. What I learned from the test is the reason I love analog... it's not 100% flawless so every key press is a unique sound wave even if the settings haven't changed. But yeah, I'd definitely go with the Behrigner version even if the were the same price. Practically identical sound, but it has a fancier sequencer and those extra FM knobs. Just wish it came in gray because the industrial look of the old one really appeals to me.

The big difference is in the filter sweep. Watch how all of the harmonics come up around the fundamental harmonic as the filter comes down in the SH. This gives it that snarl. The MS's harmonics below the resonance do not change at all. Its a clean sweep. I like the old snarl better, but would i pay that much more for it? Maybe if i didn't already have a classic analog. But for $300 this is great.
