Roland Handsonic HPD-20 Comprehensive Factory Preset Kit Tour and Reactions

Музыка

I play all 100 factory preset kits on a used Roland Handsonic HPD-20, demonstrating each patch (including the optional hi-hat and kick controllers), getting a quick feel for the kit as a whole, and sharing my initial reactions. I also test the effects of pressure, velocity, and the special D-Beam motion sensor. This video doesn't delve into advanced features such as editing kits or parameters via menus, looping/recording, or real time parameterization. I spend more time with percussive patches, and skim more quickly through melodic patches due to my own priorities for the instrument. However, you should still be able to glean some essential information about even those patches I spend less time exploring.

The genius of the HPD-20 is designing your own User Kits, which will allow you to assign the sounds you want to the pads of your choice. This obviously includes assignments to your external kick and HH trigger. Then you can use the Kit Chain feature to provide quick, sequential recalling of your redesigned User Kits in coordination with a live performance. The unit has a very powerful feature set that requires a good amount of time spent learning the unit to get your money’s worth out of it. We use the HPD-20 as a “micro kit” for live band performances in very small bars, triggering Addictive Drums and EZ Drummer. I use a separate point source PA rig for the Handsonic exclusively, with Yamaha DXR10 and subwoofer. The “drums” always astound the audience with the realism and dynamic accuracy. Yes, the internal sound are very comprehensive and good and we use them occasionally but I really love the Handsonic as a controller. It has the pad count of a full kit in a package that literally allows the drummer to fit in a corner, allowing a solid trio to fit in the typical space that a soloist or duo would occupy. Genius again. Cheers

An excellent point that bears repeating. Indeed, the scope of this video intentionally ignores the most exciting full capabilities of the instrument, as you've described. I absolutely agree that once you take the time to tap into the full features and power of customization and configuration, this becomes a superior small footprint percussion option.

Hey great vid. Did you manage to figure out a way to flip all the kits? I play the kick with my left had and snare with my right. I'm actually right handed as well so just a bit weird ha. is there a way to flip the kits so that the kicks are all on the left, snares on the right etc or do I have to go into every single kit and do it manually? I actually started to do this today and then realised it's not just the individual sounds you have to move but also all the individual settings within like the volume, filters etc etc. It would literally take days! Any advice on this would be great 🤞

I can't find a global reassignment method in the manual. The only way I see to do that is unfortunately kit-by-kit.

Can you record samples into the pads from an External Audio Source using the 1/4 inch input jack on the Handsonic? If so, How Long is the Max. Sample Length Per Pad?

Not by that direct-sampling method. You can load user-created wav files from a USB flash drive using the import function.

Hello, I am also interested in the handsonic. I am a hobby guitarist and I like to record from times to times. I record on a multi track recorder so no computer. I would like to use this as a intstrument to record drumparts. I currently have a yamaha dd 65 but the pads are too noisy because I live in an appartement. Also quality of the pads in general is not great in general and sometimes they do not trigger. I suppose the pads on this handsonic are not noisy ? Would it be good for the purpose I want it to use for ?

Generally speaking, the Handsonic seems like a good fit for apartment recording. And in your particular situation (where a Yamaha DD65 pad system is too loud) the Handsonic probably represents an easy step down in ambient volume while presenting a very similar conceptual model of play (pad mapping as opposed to a completely physically analogous drum set). Due to the sensitivity and small size of the pads, I wouldn't use sticks, but hands as intended, and that alone would reduce the ambient volume to lower-than-conversational noise. One caveat: choice of foot trigger would matter a lot. As you can hear, the V-Drum kick trigger I'm using with a chain-driven pedal is the loudest ambient sound in my video. If noise is a concern and you plan to incorporate your feet, you might peruse some quieter alternatives. Keep in mind that the Handsonic does not come with feet triggers standard --just allows them to be added. I've only played the Yamaha DD-65 once; we were asked to share the bill with a group in a wine bar, and they had brought a DD65 for their drummer who ultimately didn't show up. I had been playing djembe for our set, and they asked me to sit in with them on the DD65 (I used sticks). That particular unit was definitely a little worse for wear (which in and of itself says something), but I came away pretty unimpressed with the sensitivity, playability, and sound library. I echo your concern that in my limited exposure, I did not trust the DD65 pads to fire 100% of the time. On the other hand, with this extensive test of the Handsonic, I didn't have any trouble with unresponsive pads. Good luck! If you can find a Handsonic at a price you like, it's definitely a better instrument than the DD65.

@@CodyWeathers Thanks for your answer. Last question (about the drum kit 4) : is it possible to adapt the hi hat programming so that it "follows" the hihat controller (open/close) when you hit the pad ? In your demo de small centerpad reacted as an open hihat when being hit regardless of the foot controller.

@@45zapatero I'm still tinkering with it but short answer, yes. What wasn't probably clear from the video was that the HH foot controller was actually helping a lot, but there's a velocity setting on the hand pad that (when exceeded) still overrides and switches to a second sample (open HH), and that setting was too low. For the video, one of my ground rules was I wasn't going to get into the menus, and in so doing, I did find that the default sensitivity of the HH was unweildy, as you noticed. Ultimately, by upping the setting, I was able to exert better control over the point at which it switches.

I have an older handsonic 10 I picked up for cheap and it basically does the same things except I cant i.port new samples or wav files but it has hundreds of good percussion samples on board . I just can't see spending g over 1000 bucks 😢

I hear you, and it's certainly worth exploring if you know you don't want the additional features. On the used market, these can be found pretty reliably with just a little patience in the $750-$800 range, but your point's still quite valid that there are other options. How do your kits compare to these, sonically? I'd imagine pretty similar...

@CodyWeathers yes very much similar the hs 20 is definitely way better but I gotta say this older version is pretty cool to explore if it just had usb for importing sounds.

No doubt --real drums can't be beat for feel, but this definitely has some applications for small footprint, mixed electronic/analog, limited volume, etc.

Short answer: yes, you can. You put named wav files (e.g., "MySampleSnare") on a thumb drive. I'm actually finishing up another video where I experiment with that process that I'll be releasing soon.

Hey there! You've got some great stuff posted. I'm not as skilled at sensitive finger rolls as you are, but as I noted in the Darabuka review at 14:45, this instrument is not quite sensitive enough to pull off the full range of techniques you're using. Check his stuff out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4mtw6Zwhq6ansY.html

  • @CodyWeathers

Completely understood, and fair point (if a little rude). But you miss the point of this video re: editing/modfifying/perfecting the factory kits. Right up front at the top, I explain: "On this exercise... I'm going to go through every single kit on the factory kits and WITHOUT MODIFYING THEM I'm just going to play through them, monkey around a little bit, give you a TASTE OF WHAT THEY'RE LIKE and comment about what I notice..." In keeping with which, I acknowledge several times throughout the video that there are things that I would adjust --were I making adjustments. And I stand by that. As an addendum, when I did follow up on patch 11 Darabuka (where I specifically talked about finger rolls) shortly after making this video, in my opinion I couldn't get the right balance of sensitivity for finger rolls without sacrificing the precision of other techniques and introducing mis-triggering. So even with additional "doing my research" IMO high-sensitivity techniques are not a strength of the instrument.
