Hand Sonic HPD-20: First Impressions

Is it worth That $900 price tag?
Its almost worth the price, i recomend buying it used. It has so many killer features. A electronic beam that you control with your hand. Multiple zones for different sounds. The pad is pressure sensitive, letting you choke a sound. And it even has Midi and you can connect external pads like a kick drum or a snare! All in all, a solid product, just a tad expensive. If you can get it used for 600 bucks, you have a good deal on your hands.

    Hey Justin, what do you think of this as being an ultra portable midi kit solution? I do tons of traveling with various groups and when im on the road I have to turn down session work. This thing would fit in my back pack and I could set it up in a hotel room with a kick and hat pedals and pound out some sessions triggering superior drummer…what do you think?

    I tend to play more percussion than drums when I play live, in which case would this be a viable option to give my TDK4P Supernatural sounds (via midi) without upgrading the module (whilst having an extra standalone instrument)? Or would the set up be a night mare?

    Hi Justin, I appreciate your videos and am thankful for the time and effort you put into them. I don't want to nag, I do however believe that a few things you said about percussion isn't 100% accurate. Bleeding hands should not occur when playing hand drums. I play percussion myself (not a pro(just yet;-) and have not come across people whose hands started bleeding IF they used a proper technique. Did you take lessons or did you teach yourself to play the djembe? Secondly the drums are called congas not congos :) Congo is the country in Africa. Mere details but for me really important. Really good comments on the Roland HPD-20. I have it to supplement my acoustic percussion set and am trying to get good ideas on youtube how to implement it in my playing.

    Actually, it is entirely possible to break the skin and get bloody fingers when you are really projecting through the drum, the harder you play, the more it affects your hands. I've only had it happen once, but I was really thumping on my ashiko for an extended period of time. As he said in the video, when you try to project more, that is, hit harder, it can cause problems. Basically, when you stress the skin on your hands for an extended length of time, it won't matter what your technique is, unless you put the drum down once your skin gets to that point. It can be difficult to do though, if you're really in the groove.

    What kind of cord (specifically) do I need to run this through a board and PA system? 1/4" to 1/4"? 1/4" to XLR? Also, I have a Simmons DA-50 I would use as a monitor. Where do I plug all these cords into? Thanks for your help!

    I'm a hand percussion player currently. To be honest, I'd prefer getting dry and bleeding hands on an acoustic instrument, rather than really good hands on a digital one. I've played hand percussion since I was 9 and I just love the rebound and vibrations. I haven't had the chance to try this out yet, but its my view currently. In stick percussion, I prefer digital instruments because of the flexibility. The reason for the difference is because in hand percussion, I'm playing a select 2 instruments (Indian congos and the daf or whatever, just a hollow drum with no rebound head.) and I dont exactly want to sacrifice my 3 years of experience with vibrations and rebounds for flexibilty that I dont really want. In proper drumsets, I'm gonna start with rock, then go to jazz, then metal. I'm planning to divulge into all of that, so that I can play whatever needed and whenever needed. I'll also be planning to get addons for the drumsets. Just my opinions, great review though. Also, if you move from acoustic to digital hand percussion, theres a chance you'll need to remaster rebound, one of my friends had to.

    65 Drums I agree, although to be honest in 900$ in india, you can probably get like a few congos + bongos + chimes + a snare + a nagada + a naqqareh. Its like a percussion kit

    An electronic product like this is not intended to replace acoustic instruments but rather to expand your sonic palette. I am a hand drummer and nothing can replace my enjoyment of playing but this gives me a way to play other sounds using my existing skill set.

    I've played it before. Its a competitor of the octapad. But I didn't know it had a setting for just hands, so then Buddycats is right, it could be used as an alternative electronic hand percussion pad.

    0:11 _Roland really has a way with names, don't they?_ I'm guessing you don't play electric guitars from Ibanez? Their names a just downright ridiculous. How about a "GRG121DX" or "RG927WFXZC", for example? These model names are real. I kid you not.

    A really interesting product. I do think it's overpriced somewhat, as are all of Roland's drums and accessories. Their pianos IMO are priced very reasonably, but for some reason their drum gear isn't as affordable. I'm considering adding a percussion pad to my TD-30KV as I've run out of inputs on the module. I'm thinking of either adding an all-in-1 percussion unit, or getting a TD-11 as a side module and then adding rim triggers to my existing pads.

  • @65Drums

    @65Drums

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Ashley Cox i've used both the Octapad, and a SPDX that from Roland. They are great. And I'll agree with you about the pianos. My mom has a Roland keyboard, and they are much more reasonably priced than their drum sets. It's because Roland makes the best drum sets in the industry. For now at least. I wouldn't be surprised if that changes in the next couple of years. And then they might be forced to lower their price a bit.

  • @ashleycox432

    @ashleycox432

    I do like the idea of the SPDX, but I'll probably end up going down the side module route purely because the TD-30KV has the huge MDS25 rack with plenty of space for extra pads, and I prefer a setup with individual pads because it's more realistic. On the used market I could pick up a TD-11K and some pad mounts for my MDS25 for not much more than an SPDX. I have the RD800 which was their top stage piano until the vPiano came along at just over twice the price (at least here in the UK). The RD800 is based on real sampled instruments, but to be honest it's resolution is so fine that aside from configurability I didn't feel it offered anything over the vPiano. I believe they both use the same keyboard, and they feel very similar to play. In some ways i actually prefer some of the sounds on the RD800 because they're extraordinarily realistic, even out of the box.
