Love your channel! You've turned me on to so many cool iPad synth apps!!! I found this bit of info on the Gaia w.r.t. turning OFF the GM voices so they don't start playing unintentionally via MIDI channels other than ch1... HOW TO TURN OFF GM TONES System Update version 1.04 adds the ability to switch off the GM sound engine in the GAIA SH-01. This can be useful if you are controlling the GAIA SH-01 from another MIDI controller, or from a MIDI sequencer, and only want to hear the analog modeling synth engine on one MIDI channel. Here are the steps: 1. Hold down the [CANCEL/SHIFT] button and press the [V-LINK] button to enter the System Setting mode. 2. Hold down the EXT IN [CENTER CANCEL ON] button and press the [EFFECTS ON/OFF] button to switch the "GM Parts Switch" ON and OFF. * You can confirm the parameter setting by verifying the following light condition while holding down the EXT IN [CENTER CANCEL ON] button. [EFFECTS ON/OFF] lights up: GM Parts Switch is ON. [EFFECTS ON/OFF] lights down: GM Parts Switch is OFF. PS THANKS FOR THE 8 NEW PATCHES!!!!!

I know a Roland /Boss tech who recommended I get one of these many years ago. He still says that they are one of Roland's most reliable synths that he only gets to fix after gross mis-treatment. They also have a very low drain back up battery which should last 20 years. I think they were designed to be used in schools and colleges so were built bullet proof.

The Roland Gaia SH-01 was my first ever synthesizer, up until then I was always in and out of Red Dog Music (sadly its gone now) in Edinburgh p[laying with their amazing display of keyboards and always getting dirty loks from some of the staff for "I wish he'd buy something" be I rarely did, I did however purchase the SH-01 second hand, it came as ex-display with no box or instructions either and to this day I've still got it and I play with it every single day, I have a few other synths now too but they are digital synths whereas the SH-01 is a virtual analogue synth. So today I stumbled upon somebody elses video about the Gaia SH-01 and the guy was talking about downloading 64 new patches at a small cost of just $23.00, the thing is though that my SH-01 was already uploaded with some 64 patches while being on display in Red Dog Music and since theres no LED display to view I cannot see what they are called ?? how do I know I'm not going to purchase the exact same patches ??? 🤔😣😣 that would be a bit of a bad luck !! So after watching a few more videos on KZread your video came up and I was surprised to hear you say that there are 8 hidden banks of new sounds, well I thought to myself, how will he be able to tell if they are new banks ?? theres no LED display and quite a few of the existing banks sounds like each other anyway 😲😲 but I watched your video anyway and I was wrong, you made me pleasantly surprised to hear the 8 new sounds, I've owned this synth for quite a few years now and I never knew about these sounds 😖😖 some of them sounds absolutely great especially No's 1 the church organ and there are a good few already on the machine 👍 (and no, before you suspect anything I'm NOT a bible thumper) 😲🙄 I also like No 4 the violin and No 7 the Doo Doo Doo na Daa Daa Daa !! lol 😆 So because you opened my eyes and ears too, to 8 new sounds I have just subscribed to your channel nd given you a thumbs up too 👍 Hope to see some more great videos ?? If you or anyone else knows any more hidden sound banks in the SH-01 then let me know please ?? Glen 👍 What about the bagpipes ??? anyone know if theres a patch available for the bagpipes ??? lol 😂😂🤣

It seems Roland snug in a bit of their General MIDI Wavetable into that beauty :D The DOH DAH patch is nice!! So darn cheesy but man i love it. This hidden easteregg kinda makes the GAIA a lil bit of a D-50. Especially with that voice ooooh pad in preset 8. I wonder, can you actually stack them like in all 3 Tones and save them as custom presets? I remember having looked at that Synth back in 2011 or 2012 but never really followed it again anymore. Looking back at it now it still seems quite tempting.

I just used the USB port to connect to an old version of Cubase. I was surprised to find out the GAIA's USB port not only is a MIDI connection but also a high quality audio interface. If I create an audio track, then whatever sound I have selected on the GAIA, it's audio is then recorded! Then when I created MIDI tracks I found out channel 2 on up will play a General MIDI voice inside the GAIA. You have to use the program number assignment on the CUBASE MIDI track to choose the General MIDI voice you want. The only issue is it will also play the General MIDI voice as well as the synth voice so one has to select each of the three voices in the GAIA and turn the gain to zero so all you then hear is the General MIDI voice. The General MIDI voices have no effects on them.

It was such a fantastic concept by roland to have 3 subtractive synth engines instead of just having a normal 3 oscillator synth, the sounds you can create with thous 3 amp env and the 3 filter env plus the 3 pitch env, are amazing, some of the progressive pads that you can create that evolve over time using all the env on this synth and the modulation sound fantastic, and if you really try you can get some d50 type pad sounds out of it, i wished roland would bring out a more upmarket version with 6 subtractive synth engines and maybe a sample engine to :)

These PCM was the only mistake Roland made. If you have a controller keyboard in zones sending 3 different MIDI channels to 3 synths, the Gaia will respond to channel one, but the PCMs will respond to channel 2, 3, 4..... making this synth impossible to filter MIDI channels going to it. You can't just send MIDI channel one to the Gaia when you are sending a different zone MIDI channel to another synth, the Gaia will pick up the other MIDI channels and play the PCM sounds built in.

these 8 sounds could be a demo mode, so that you can here the PCM sounds in a store, without having to dick around with it. OR - they could be for educational purposes, for students to play around with filtering and enveloping complex waveforms via the front panel of the Gaia, and comparing to the sound of simple waveforms. This would make sense, because they are all sustained sounds which would respond well to such experimentation. Both envelopes are available and the filter settings, and I have also noticed that pressing both User and Preset together 'MANUAL' applies the current settings of these parameters to the sound. Neat! Is anyone aware if these actual sounds are all available somewhere else, within the internal GM set.., and has anyone ever documented the GM set? (other than simply the GM2 name-set, that is?)

At initial release the sound of it had overlapping problems. That was fixed via firmware later on, but the reviews were already in place. Plus the software to connect it to the PC costed additional $100 or a bit less plus the hassle to buy the thing (not downloable). If you add the fact that many powerful features were non available on the manual or crippled on the firmware, and several ones took years to be released/informed.... That is the story. The good side is that if you search, you for sure will find. And the potential is there; it is lighweight but somehow built like a tank plus it takes a little firmware tweaking by someone at Roland together with their online platform to wake up this dorm spaceship. No hardware fix needed because it is virtual analogue _ but not hybrid_ so plenty of room to improve. If Roland decides to sell system upgrades, sure will be an audience for it. Within time it will happen, with Roland or not...

@@Nexando That was a detailed explaination. Thank you! :) I never heard about all these issues back then when it came out. Heard of this synth being released but didn't care so much as i wasn't in the mood for a virtual analog synth when others were starting to release all analog gear again slowly. However i was still kinda interested due to it's accessible functions on the frontpanel. This is why i even got myself one and my god, they actually fleshed out this thing at one point. Yeah the 100 bucks programmer software was Roland's biggest mistake… and their second big mistake was discontinuing the software and not even making it available for free as abandonware without updates. It sucks that i cannot even organize my patches properly or a create own arpeggio sequences without this software. Still though, you can create amazing patches even without the software. Other synthesizers were wayyy worse to handle this way. Like Akai's Miniak which i still deeply regret ever having bought and fortunately i could sell it again to someone else. I love the Gaia and have already put together a wonderful user bank of personal patches. And i actually regret not having gotten one a little earlier.. like 5 years ago or so.

It’s mostly analog purists against digital emulation (Roland calls it “virtual analog”). However, to be fair, the filter in Gaia leaves a lot to be desired if you are used to classic VCF implementations. This makes it impossible for the synth to sound like vintage Rolands. It sounds like Gaia, and has its unique character.

They are 8 separate pcm sounds that roland thought would be a good idea to include, personally i think theyre a waste of time.the gm sounds are transmitted over the other 15 channels, drums being on channel 10 and channel 1 reserved for the gaia synth engine.you can only access the gm sounds via another keyboard or controller.the gm sounds are midi standard sounds.like nick batt says,it would have been better if the 3 synths of the gaia were on separate midi channels ,ie osc1 on channel 1 ,osc2 on channel 2 and osc 3 on channel 3.that would have made the gaia even more amazing.hope this helps a bit.
