The Maestro. Tennis incarnate. The greatest _pure_ player and shotmaker to have played this most beautiful game. Recent partisan tennis fans nowadays won't stop complaining that Fed fans have "moved the goalpost" from the number of slams to "most elegant player". What they don't realize is that, to so many of the Fed's fans, it was really his _elegance_ that drew them to him. The aesthetic he single-handedly created and revealed stirred them in a way they hadn't been stirred before. Their natural, human but dormant "aesthetic instinct" (to see beauty in the mobile human form) was awoken by the Fed's sublime play. *_That_* is why millions on millions tuned in to watch him. *_That_* is why Johnny Mac was calling him "probably the greatest player in our sport" during the USO 2004 final (when he was still on 3 slams and going for a 4th). *_That_* is why DFW wrote his famous 'Roger Federer as Religious Experience' way back in 2006, when the Fed still had fewer than 10 slams. So, yes, tennis is a sport that is about winning and losing and about numbers and Rafa and the Djoker have eventually been able to put up (slightly) greater numbers, mostly because they came in the Fed's wake and had something to aim for. (Also, to make a sport like tennis _just_ about numbers seems very limiting.) And yes, the Djoker is winning slams and Masters 1000s in his 30s, but the Fed did that *first* _while_ playing the Djoker himself. (It's worth noting that Cincinnati was missing from the Djoker's kitty purely on account of the Fed and that he won it finally when Fed was 37 (!) and going through a rough patch with his wrist. With the Fed not even playing the next time, the Djoker promptly went and won it again.) Take anything in modern post-wooden-racket tennis (outside of RG and Rafa) and Fed is either the pioneer or the greatest exponent or both. And _that_ badge is something that will always remain with him. He will forever remain the gold standard for tennis play. Nobody will *_ever_* combine success with aesthetics in the way the Fed did for about 16 remarkable years (2003-2019). All hail the Fed! 🙏

I think it is fair to say that Federer at his best was able to bagel or close to bagel any other Top 5 player in the world. But not the other way around.

If you didn't see it with your own eyes you wouldn't believe that a player could play such beautiful and perfect tennis. No one has ever combined power and beauty and accuracy like this. Just absolutely mind blowing.

Right? Very rarely can a player play good, winning tennis, and yet, also beautiful tennis at the same time. Most players are one or the other. You can either play ugly, winning tennis (like Nadal, Soderling, or Gulbis, to name a few examples) No knock on Nadal - he just doesn't have a conventional style. Or, you can play beautiful tennis like Gasquet or Wawrinka's backhands, Feliciano's S&V game, Dimitrov's "baby Fed" strokes, or Santoro's double-handed forehands and slices. However, Federer's brand of tennis is both effective in terms of results, and aesthetically pleasing to the eye! Which is why it's so mesmerizing to watch.

The fact that Murray and Djokovic are considered one of the greatest returns of all time, without having been broken all week. Absolutely the perfect tournament. Also, this outfit was slick asf. One of my favorites.

When he plays like that, he's unbeatable. I mean in this video he made great players like Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic lose their cool, he's like a puppet master of tennis when he plays at that level, doing whatever he wants on the court

The most elegant player in the history of this game. Every shot looks so simple and effortless, it's just unreal. Roger Federer celebrates and IS Tennis! Whenever he retires, Tennis will loose his biggest ambassador and the most loved player of all time. For me he is the Greatest of All Time. He might not win the most titles due to many reasons, but no one else will ever inspire so many people around the world of every age to play tennis. Of course Nadal and even Djokovic are essential for this historic rivalry and for the increased popularity of tennis but Roger Federer started it all. I love all three of the big three and I believe who ever retires first will be missed by everyone. So please Roger, come back again for one last celebration of Tennis, friendship, elegance, rivalry, fascination and love for this amazing sport!

This just shows the level of competiton Djokovic faced in that 2015 was way higher that Fedal fangirs suggest. Way higher than in any other year since 2011, than maybe 2011 itself. Federer was reborn in 2015, played some great stuff. Would have beaten anyone at the Us Open and Wimby, appart from Djokovic.

A pleasure to watch. These days tennis is just bashing the ball from the baselines. And I am including both WTA and ATP. Saying that, Tsitsipas sometimes brings (some) of that "Federer flavor" to the game.
