Rodrick gives "cut my family out of my life after high school" vibes, and I wouldn't blame him. It can be traced to rodrick as why Greg treats rowley like that since your relationship with your siblings defines how you treat your peers. If anything this just makes it less forgivable for rodrick to treat Greg like that when he’s clearly showcased he can treat his friends with dignity. Rodrick is just a bully and when ppl are bullied they look to somehow lower to punch down on and that’s exactly what Greg does to rowley.

Let's not forget in DOAWK: Rodrick Rules, Rodrick wisely used Susan's "mom bucks" against her by buying a bunch of fake money from the board game Susan got the money from in the first place.

  • @mjdxp5688

I think that's a really interesting moment personally. In the book, Greg ends up playing the board game the money is from with Rowley, and he ends up taking it all and stashing it under his bed. He starts exchanging it slowly to not arouse suspicion, but when Rodrick ends up finding the money, he takes it all and tries to trade it all at once, which Susan immediately recognises as impossible. I think that shows just how little Rodrick thinks of his parents. He truly believes that his mother is dumb enough to give him a thousand dollars for his counterfeit Mom Bucks.

That was Greg, but he did lend rodrick some, and he used them all at once even though his mom hadn't given out that many at all. He's smart, but this isn't an example. More so, the opposite. He's the reason they got caught

@@kastov74u Honestly it wasn’t too much of a good plan and Rodrick did the morally right thing. Rodrick knew that the Mom Bucks situation was flawed if she could just pay them in fake money instead of having a normal allowance, leaving room for her to actually scam her own children out of money + a system where Greg or even Manny could just get fake money and ruin the system furthermore Cashing them all in at once busted a flawed system and made sure no one would be spoiled. If it didn’t work, they’d go back to normal money. If it did, he got a free payout. Rodrick COULD have just been dumb, but I like to interpret it as “this is not how the economy works mom”

I think Rodrick is just trying to make the best of a bad situation. He's realized his entire family has several screws lose, but he realized he could take advantage of that. Rodrick knows that he and Greg are essentially forgotten by his parents, so he can take his stress out on Greg. His parents don't approve of his musical career, but he uses it to keep them away from him. When your parents go away and leave you alone, of course you're going to have a party, and he was responsible enough to not leave the house a total wreck. I think it's possible Rodrick noticed the way Manny uses social engineering to get what he wants, and Rodrick learned that he could exploit his parents as well to keep them from making his life hell. Overall I'd consider Rodrick very smart and cunning. He's aware of his situation but he's able to survive without losing his mind.

I'd argue that while yes it is manipulative it isn't 'bad' or unusual. Manipulative isn't always bad, if it was your high school persuasive piece would be considered 'bad' as you tend to use slightly manipulative tactics while persuading someone. I'm not excusing manipulation of course, however you can manipulate someone lightly without it being toxic or bad. The main factor of this is how frequent and how severe it is. Gaslighting someone to make them question their own memories or pressuring someone into something they don't want to do is bad Playing dumb to make your dad who doesn't pay attention to you or care to help you with your assignment isn't bad.

I feel like Rodrick HAS absorbed some of his family's manipulative tendencies, but for the most part, he isn't doing anything out of the ordinary for a typical teenager in a children's book. Most teenagers in books are mean bullies who break the rules and are defiant. I can only hope he wises up to the fact that his entire family is a toxic nightmare and he moves away, cuts contact, and becomes a rockstar. Also, who the hell names their kid "Rodrick?" I had literally never heard of that name before up until I read the books, I have never heard it since, and I do not know of anyone who actually has that name in real life. I honestly thought it was made up for the books.

Honestly Disney Plus’ animated movie made them all seem a little more human. Greg still did bad things, but it showed Greg and Rodrick actually bonding AND Rodrick and his mom actually seemed to like each other (she jammed out whenever the band came over, it was actually a really cute touch lol). While I still love the books and the live action movies are cool, the animation really added to them.

Honestly Roderick resembles lots of people with younger siblings. He genuinly doesnt (physically) harm Greg. And he isnt necesarilly manipulative in an evil way. Obviously everyone cheats or breaks rules. But he tricks people vs manipulates. He causes temporary consequence for Greg, unlike his familly who quite literally break peoples arm's and neglect their children. He isnt the best most civilized child. But he acts like most older brothers honestly. Maybe even a little bit nicer.

FINALLY. Someone has said it! Greg breaks all of Rowley's toes bc of the dumbell thing, takes his job away, make's that one student bullied in school by pretending Manny was calling him bubby instead of himself, and fricking STALKS Heather. Rodrick does normal teen things like prank people on the street, throw loud parties, and prank his siblings, and he's the villain of the story?

In the books Roderick seems rebellious at times but the dude literally replaced a door that got vandalized at his party, and most of the time he seems fine.
