As long as he felt the documentary wasn't about all his accomplishments, but rather to help better the world, through his thoughts, messages and actions. That would be key. Rodney wants the spotlight to be very dim if pointed at him. He's as modest as they come, but truly is a man who makes the world better for so many.

That was so incredible I was glued to my computer screen. Having been in a similar situation at one point though (literally having a gun pointed at my head) I kind of understand what he was going through. It's a surreal experience when you face your own mortality, but in my case I was being robbed and the guy would probably have killed me if I stood up to him. It was still the single scariest moment of my life and one that I've flashed back to many times in the 25 years since.

After Rodney tells that story I see why he didn't want to tell it. He does not want to tell a story where he acted bravely where many would not. Rodney does not enjoy elevating his stature in any way. It seems.

I love how Rodney os like completely clueless about just how famous and popular he truly is. I think he has sort of an imposter syndrome. He doesn’t really truly grasp just how influ he has been for sooooo many people. Also look at just how excited he is any time they mention one of their friends for the first time. He’s more excited to talk to about anyone else but himself. Dude is a legend and a mystery. He understands the ideal to always leave them wanting more. Then he rides off in the sunset. Such a good cool dude. We love him for all the same reasons everyone loves Keanu. Just good people.
I met Rodney in my local park (not skatepark) in London UK a couple of months ago, He literally rolled past me on his board and I instantly recognised him but had to double/triple take because "what the hell would Rodney Mullen be doing here????" i went after him and said Hi, He was the nicest guy very friendly and exactly how he is here, told me about being there because of the Marvel move etc, had a chat. I was so stoked but stunned too. Took a selfie with him because I just had to to prove it to myself it happened 😂 - Yeah cool story bro, but I'm so happy it happened.

Rodney's story about skating in the rain was incredible. I could hear how badly he wanted to make it about the skating - and not how good he is at the tricks. His relationship with skating is the closest thing to an example of unity and peace I've ever witnessed in another human.
@TysonHook-22-

Hearing him describe skating in the rain and the way the water swirls off the board as the deck spins, I couldnt help but think that sounds like true "poetry in motion" a phrase often used to describe MJs playing style and its so fitting for the art of Rodney's skating too. and it had been awhile since i watch that 360 camera project that he did, but i remember there being elements of color swirls/blurs in it, that i didnt really like originally or understand why they choose to do it that way... but after hearing him talk about it, it gave me an entirely new love and appreciation for it and when he stated that the filmer's had decided to tell a new story through the project and that they showed him a sample and thats what really drew him into the project... I think that story/experience they attempted to convey is Rodney skating in the rain with the swirls/blur of color around him... or at least thats what i see upon watching it nowadays.

Mullen is such a rare human, a one of a kind. I first saw him skate when Public Domain hit the skate shops on VHS. I was never a great skater and I gave up many years ago but individuals like Rodney have stayed with me throughout life and following his growth, his evolution not only as a skater but as a human has been a source of unspeakable inspiration in terms of overcoming external and internal challenge. There is a great spiritualism to his being that resonates with me deeply also, maybe because I am not that much younger and the experience of life itself instills, or really should do, an understanding of oneself within the cosmic context of All.

The world and world of skateboarding NEEDS rodney mullen!!! The street skating side of things has gotten so big and grown so much there's nobody that would be better at guest commentary or judging or even just bringing his energy to the contestants. Not only can his modesty and energy light up a room but he's so respected that he can bring another level out of people!!! There will never be a doubt in my mind that rodney and Tony are THE goats of skateboarding.
I am so glad i stumbled on this. 2 hours of pure magic. Rodney is a treasure.
Rodney is LEGEND! Also, never heard anyone bring this up, but he also did a gig where he narrated the entire intro to the game Ghost Recon Breakpoint. I booted that up and was like... "Mullen?? wtf"

Not only did he narrate the intro, he also played a character in the game itself named Jace Skell.
"Yeah, I can do a couple things." -Rodney Understatement of the century.
I always loved and respected Mullen for his skating skill and creativity. But hearing him just talk and go over his craft in this group, dudes a legend sitting among legends no question.
Rodney Mullen. One of the greatest humans of our time. His energy is so beautiful
Got to the end. Rodney makes me tear up with how well he can articulate how skateboarding has made me feel over the years. Thanks for this interview guys.
Dude this was the best, I've wanted to see this kind of thing with rodney for ages thank you all for giving us this
Bruh this is one of my all-time favorite podcast episodes ever - these three turn back to kids when they reminisce about the early days
This honestly the most interesting podcast I've ever listened to. I can't say I'm a huge skateboard person I've never been any good myself but I've always enjoyed and appreciated the amount of skill it takes and could watch videos of people skating all day. I've only come across this now unfortunately, but that only gives me loads more to go back and watch!
I was wondering how I was going to turn this awful morning around. Problem solved. Thanks guys, hope you're doing well.

Same to you friend. We're all part of the same scene!
This was amazing. Being a skater in the 90s (and a shitty skater at that lol) I have very fond memories of skating in my buddy's barn as well and also sitting around watching skate videos on VHS and getting so so pumped. Fast forward now where I'm in my mid 40s and that same feeling is still there when watching skate videos, but even more so watching your skate hero's casually chatting about the old days.

The good ol days of being called a poser by kids who you were better then
In 1977 my family moved from Anderson Indiana to Clearwater Florida. We had a skateboard park on Drew Street and US 19 called “ Clearwater Skateboard Park “. My younger brother Randy and I decided to enter the contest that was being held there. We thought for sure we had a chance because we had been skateboarding since 1973. We knew how it worked. We knew what to do. We knew that we were in the game. And then, Rodney Mullen happened. We were watching everyone warm up, and the only person that was warming up was Rodney. And I looked over at my brother and said to him, Randy,,,, there is no way we can compete with any of the skaters. Come to find out, everyone there couldn’t compete with this “ one “ skater. My brother Randy and I had walked up and seen Rodney Mullen warming up and decided that all the skaters were that good. We did not enter the contest the contest. This was my home park. My brand new home park and I couldn’t compete because everyone there was better than my brother and I. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. The day that this happened, that moment was captured in time. And I just recently found it here on KZread. It’s amazing, someone filmed it. And you get to see it right now. How cool? How amazing the technology is today that someone took the technology of yesterday and entered it in today’s? This is the video. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did because of a shock to find it online. I had no idea anyone filmed it. And those who did come up come up I’m more than sure they have thrown it away way before this video was produced. Enjoy, spread the news by sharing it. Because it is an amazing piece of Skateboard history. 🤙🏼 kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIVkxs6pirHamcY.html at the same contest, Mike McGill got second place in the Half pipe competition, Alan “Ollie” Gelfand took first only after Mike took a really super hard fall trying to recover from a very sketchy invert. The bottom line here is, Mike should have taken first even after the fall. But history redeems him. LOL skateboarding history. You got a love it.
I was in first grade in 1987, and my school had a book on skateboarding (actually the only one) that had Tony on the front cover and I would sign it out every week and take it with me everywhere. It was only two years later that I would be introduced to Rodney when Gleaming The Cube came out in 1989, and I remember rewinding the montage of Rodney skating in the parking garage at the end of the movie over and over again because it was that magical to watch (and still is).
Two hours of Love, Tears (happy ones) and joy, watching this ever-shining guiding star that is Rodney Mullen. You mean so much to so many.

Couldn’t have said it better!! Absolute LEGEND!!!
This podcast is amazing. Please never stop this. Rodney is incredibly unique and we need to hear more of his stories. Please do a part2. ASAP!!!
after reading his book “the mutt” really an insight to knowing who he is and what he went through. when I was reading I could hear his voice in my head through the pages. I’ve never experienced that before in all the books I’ve ever read.
Rodney is one of the best parts of the Tony Hawk documentary. It was beautifully done and Tony was Great
I've been waiting for this my whole life! As a teenager Rodney inspired me to become a pro skateboarder. I am now in my 30s and NOT a pro skateboarder but this dude still inspires me!
It’s absolutely insane. I’ve been skating since 1972/73. & I can say without a doubt, what an amazing subculture skateboarding is. And it made the main stream now, but it still has a subculture that can’t be denied in anyway. I feel so blessed to be entangled in this web we call the Skateboard community. Absolutely amazing.

"I can do a few things..." the most understated quote ever uttered by any human being in history.
More Rodney plz. I’ve watched this podcast so many times and some more would be great.
Rodney F**King Mullen people. Rodney Fing Mullen. I must have said that 50 times to myself during this. I've laughed, enjoyed, and been happy during previous episodes of Hawk vs. Wolf. But this one. This one with Rodney fricking Mullen gave me joy. Pure Joy. Joy. I can't tell you the last time that's happened, if ever. I don't believe in a god like being, but if it turns out there is, I'll be more than happy to burn for eternity knowing that Rodney's father knows he ain't no bum. People like Rodney make life worth living. Thank you Rodney for being brave enough to just be you. Thank you Tony and Jason for making this happen. Merry fricking holidays to us all.
What a truly legendary bloke. Impossible not to well up a few tears listening this guy for long enough, so humble and so meaningful, and not just to the skating world.
These legends speaking from the heart. So rad. Thanks for posting this.
I was having such a bad day and Rodney Jay and Tony just helped me so much
Tony: "The parallels of our life and how they intersect was that he went and started doing Ollie grabs on flat Jason: "oh you did that's right" Rodney: "because of you" Jason "you did the ollie indy air because Tony did the ollie indy air" Tony "I went and learned finger flips cause of him, and he learned air walks cause of me" Jason "Nooooooooooooooooooo Mate, Oh shit!!" lmao I would have had the same reaction and never knew how these 2 interacted. I'm an old School BMX rider and skater. I love this interview.,
I worked with Rodney's GF on a tv show a few years ago and he came to set and could not be any nicer...signed boards, shaking hands, taking pictures with the crew, such a great guy.
‘79 Del Mar Hester Series. Folmer was skating the deep halfpipe, Wally was doing the orange and yellow tile backyard pool photo shoot, Gelfand (Hollywood , FL) flowed me a board/wheels and Olsen flipped me some 169’s. The keyhole was packed. I could not get a single practice run. The next moment everyone just migrates to the freestyle area to see Rodney skate. McGill (from NPR Florida) was there too. AG brings the Ollie, Rodney took the Ollie to every place he skated, Folmer (BocaRato) was Florida’s Brad Bowman. And then Rodney (one of my groms from Sensation Basin, (Gainesville, FL) blew freestyle and everyone’s mind. Add Mikey’s McTwist. Florida had a huge impact on skating. Add Kelly Slater… pretty impressive. Shout out to Basin locals!!!
Im now 45 from Edinburgh in Scotland and this is absolutely the best podcast on youtube, I will never everforget having the pleasure as a teenager meeting Tony, Mike Mcgilll and Steve Caballero at Livingstone Skatepark in Scotland back in 1990, completely changed my life and I still remember every minute of it to this day,!!! Even found my old pink Hawk Skull Powell deck in the attic last year!!!
