I miss the kind of movies and the kind of actors that come from this era of film. They brought so much skill, professionalism, and respect to the craft… which consequently captivates and entertains at the highest levels.

I liked the way Costas let Steiger respond without interruption. I was really taken by Steiger's candid assessment of himself and well thought out and very perceptive analysis of the great actors he worked with.

at age 11, before ratings systems started, I watched Hackman bleed to death from a .38 slug to the head in 'Bonnie & Clyde'. nobody had ever yet seen that on screen. there was no blood really, before that. and on TV, I saw Steiger as Capone, and I was an instant fan. when Martin Balsam tries to calm him down, and maybe leave town for a while, "what!!? I ain't leavin' town! "but Al"..."don't Al me! everybody's Al, Al! " his Italian temper really comes out. he and DeNiro were the best Capones.

Once he starts talking, you can't take your eyes off of him What a presence.A true force of nature. Also, Bob Costas did a great job of interviewing as he always had on this show. He left this kind of show to be a sports commentator, his great passion.

One of the most underrated actors ever. He SHOULD be named in every conversation about best actors of all time

Rod brings power and legitimacy as soon as he hits film. Truly a treasure in a generation of hero’s and leaders!!!

The Pawnbroker and On The Waterfront were, (and still are), two of the biggest most influential films in my life. Nobody mentions The Chosen, a great little film and a part that he did in ‘81 where his acting easily equals all of his better known work. This interview is a good one because Steiger lays himself out and is very forthcoming, willing to admit things about himself that many famous actors would keep hidden. It was a magic time for acting both stage and screen with the advent of The Actor’s Studio. The stars were lined up then. Thank God for film, preserving for future generations.

One of the top 2 or 3 character actors of all time. I cannot think of one who is better. Robert Duvall comes close I think.

Rod Steiger is right up there with actor Gene Hackman. Gene Hackman’s performance in the 1971 iconic movie The French Connection was outstanding. His co star in it, Roy Scheider….also outstanding.

Loved Mr Steiger in The Pawnbroker and In The Heat of the Night. He truly was an innovator.

I remember his radio show, he had 'the Kid', Ted Williams on. he asked Ted what's it like to hit a ball just right and crush it out of the ballpark? what analogy would you use?" "well (to great laughter),there may be something I'd compare it to if we weren't on the air" that was one funny moment.

Indeed, they both act up a storm in that one, despite their different approaches. Just goes to show, the method or path that an actor chooses is secondary to what that final result is. Clearly, they were known for delivering the goods, as it were.

That is a great watch. Thank you so much. When I was very small there was a broadcast called something like NBC Monday Night at the Movies, anyway they broadcast The Pawnbroker (in prime time) and he was mesmerizing to me, always a big fan ever since.

Rod Steiger is one of my favorite actors of all time. This man did not even have to say anything in a film. All you had to do was look at his face and the expression in his face said exactly what he was feeling in the parts he played. Now, that's acting!!

Great interview made even better by the fact that one of the great actors in cinema history was so open, so genuine and so expansive with his answers! The actors today make the interviewer and audience feel as if they're doing them a favor saying a word or two. What a contrast between the old time stars and the actors from today!

Rod was so good as Al Capone-dont miss his performance in that film

Another Great interview by Costas. ...As for Steiger; we (humans) are so lucky to have "known" men like him and those he worked with (and the many he didn't work with). At the same time, it's sad because us (humans) will never know men/women like those Great-ever again.

Those were the days when the Academy awards were a bunch of great films competing against each other, The Pawnbroker, On the Waterfront, see No way to treat a lady. Could you imagine him teaching an acting class.

Because of stories that have been told, Costas was expecting, "One take." Instead he got eleven hours. Good interviewee.

Who had a greater body if work? My favorite Steiger performances, Marty was just amazing, start to finish, but his final scene in Back From Eternity, not a lot of dialog, but the emotion that scene elicits, indescribable

Had the opportunity to work with Rod on a film in New Orleans, discovered what it means to work with a "Star" glad to have had the experience.

Yes, someone else on KZread uploaded this video but the entire video and not part of it, where I commented on that. Go natural - It’s always better. The calf-length socks and the short pants showing off his cankles is also pretty bad. If you check out that other video, at one point he throws his leg over the arm of the chair, which was pretty weird. Appearance-wise, this was probably his least flattering moment.

rod stieger is one o the greatest 'actors' I ever saw......if you don't believe that watch a movie called 'No Way to Treat a Lady'. then tell me he isn't

Steiger's explanation of Bogart's and Spencer Tracy's talent as actors is fascinating...and spot on.

Thank you for sharing this interview. Fascinating. This was done back in the day when you could hear a quality interviewer do his job and keep the focus on the interviewee.

Possibly the most under-rated American actor. Terrific insights into Brando and Bogart. An 'actor's actor' if ever there was with the Ego wittled away. Someone else mentioned Gene Hackman,, same same to me.

Steiger for me is the best American film actor I have seen it would have been interesting to see him as Don corleone I like Brando but Steiger hits you on an emotional level

As a kid he was my favorite actor.when I was head pianist at the los Angeles international film exposition,and I meet Ray Bradbury the great writer , I asked him if he was happy with any of the movies made into films. He said only one,the illustrated man with rod stiger

Sorry, typos. GREAT MOVIE, the Pawnbroker. Rod just defined himself. The average man in the street, was why people believe him in any role.

That was one of the most fascinating interviews with an actor I've ever seen.

Steiger is a giant of the industry.

One of the greatest actors that ever lived. I love the comparison between him and Gene Hackman. Two powerhouses that have played the hero and the villain with equal brilliance. Top ten or 15 all time. Probably higher. I hadn't the chance to see The Pawnbroker. Yet, not even mentioned was his fabulous portrayal of Judd Frye in the musical Oklahoma. Absolutely wicked. Steiner had a God given gift to attach himself like a parasite to ever human feeling. A true genius as an actor if ever one existed. Like Hackman totally brilliant and underappreciated.

I think playing “off” another actor (Poitier, Brando) is easier than summoning feelings independently. That’s why I believe The Pawnbroker was the superior performance. These old icons were such characters!

In the Heat of the Night is overrated, imo, and his role wasn't anything special. I recommend Run of the Arrow (1957) by Samuel Fuller.

Rod Steiger never got that he was a genius at the same level as Brando. His problem wasn't narcissism per se, he was an actual genius. Some geniuses have difficult lives and relationships because they carry a great talent.

In this entire video, not one mention of his best film Run of the Arrow (1957) directed by Samuel Fuller? Samuel Fuller talks about how Steiger was a royal pain in the ass to work with. At one point, they did forty or so takes because Steiger refused to go in the direction Fuller wanted. It was a contest of wills where Fuller said they'd stay there for as long as it took to get it right. He also said Steiger was imitating the trendy acting "method" of mumbling his lines. But, for all that, Steiger's presence in the film is great. Run of the Arrow is a definite must-see.

Very complicated guy no doubt, very much introspective on why we are all damaged and use that damage thru acting. Somewhat ego driven but he was so damn good.

From what I understand Rod explained about the steam like vapors coming out of his mouth in that one scene, due to hot air from the Lung and outside air cold, what i heard they do now in that situation the actor put pieces of ice in his mouth to cool down the hot breath ,so there is no vapors. Fabulous interview from a fantastic Actor from a bygone era.

"You are the best thing you got...........and the worst thing you got." That's for sure. He sometimes got rapped for overacting, and on occasion he did. But he was entertaining to watch and when he was on there were few better. I read a magazine interview he did in the middle 90's where he opened up about his depression, admitted to himself his problem, got medication treatment, had no shame about it, and was now a better man for it. I took encouragement from that when I had a bad speed bump in life at that same time.

He was fantstic in Doctor Zhivago.

Rod Steiger was a wonderful actor, there's no doubt about it. I saw "In The Heat Of The Night" when it was released. I have that movie (DVD) which I have watched numberless times, and I believe that Mr Steiger did a great job in it. But, I honestly still believe that of all the nominees that year, Spencer Tracy deserved the Oscar for "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner".

'Heat of the night' was a Government propaganda movie ...totally overrated ....won awards for political reasons ...far better is Rod Steigers performance as WC Fields ..or Hennesey !

Rod could - and often did ! - stray into Ham territory but at his best he really was untouchable. He had the courage and the ability to tackle an unattractive role like the Pawnbroker and produce a triumph.

Fantastic interview! His insights were so interesting it almost made me forget about his horrible toupee. Seriously, he thought that looked good? But aside from that, his insights were brilliant and I loved every minute of it.

The taxi scene is the most poignant piece of film I've ever scene.

*Costas 'missed the mark' in his synopsis of 'The Pawnbroker'which is 'Once you see and know and live with the reality of 'How things really are under the surface' you can no longer pretend to be 'normal' to YOURSELF* *The scene with the 'ticket-holder' with the 'spike' was an attempt to 'anchor' himself...to try and feel 'real' again as opposed to the reality of the death-camp running an endless loop in his mind and now eroding his feelings for the boy* ___________ *My personal favorite is 'The Illustrated Man"...a wanderer cursed by his own awareness of 'There is far more than we know' of what we commonly think-of as 'Real'* ( *The hair-piece on Steiger's head is driving me batsh!t while i'm trying to listen and think* )

@@pauldavies5611 *My family moved to Las Vegas in '63...years later I was 'bagging' at 'Mayfair' market off Sahara and i bagged groceries for Connery and Jill St. John and put 5-bags into the trunk of one of the 'movie cars from 'Diamonds Are Forever'...a Mustang Mach-One and got a $5 tip!* *Connery looked like a 'Greek God' statue come to life, no make-up, no nothing* *Jill looked like a 'nice looking girl' but that was all...no 'boner city' for her* ( *Not knocking her...but other people disappear around him* ) *Sean was was 'the most perfect-looking person' I've ever seen in 68-yrs and I saw MANY in Vegas in the 'old days'...I used to mow Terri Moore's yard and she was a 'stunner' even then...she looked just as she did in 'Mighty Joe Young' except for some 'eye wrinkles' that actually made her look better!* ____________ *My 'all-time fave' of Connery is 'The Wind & The Lion' and 'least' is 'Zardoz' which was, imo, a 'complete mess'*

Yes, Connery was certainly the best looking Bond of the bunch, imo. It's interesting that in movies before the Bond series he's not that striking. I'm thinking of 'Hell's Drivers', 'Darby and the Little People', 'The Longest Day'' (at least those are the ones I've seen). My favorite movie of his is 'Goldfinger' with 'The Wind and the Lion' a close second. And yes, 'Zardoz' was just kind of silly.

Rod Steiger sounds like WC fields, just like in the movie, "WC Fields and me."

I always thought of Rod Steiger as guarded and suspicious. This interview gives the lie to that idea. Humble, candid and thoughtful is my new assessment.

@@stevejoshua9536 No, by a Catholic mother and father who also happened to be Czech. In 1960, when I was 10 yrs. old, I was staying at a hotel in Austria when us kids, who had just finished viewing 'The Ten Commandments' were sent off to bed so the adults could watch 'Some Like It Hot'. Go figure

An excellent actor sometimes miscast. Sometimes not with the right cast but always compelling

I just couldn't believe the guy who plays Charlie in On the Waterfront is the same guy who played the baddie in The Specialist.
