Rod Cameron: B-Western Hero to TV Legend - Son Tony Cameron Shares on AWOW

Ойын-сауық

Growing Up Western! Rugged 6’4” cowboy movie legend Rod Cameron moved from Canada to Hollywood in the late 1930s. He worked his way up from being an extra to a stuntman, then from a Republic serial star to a B western hero, and finally an A movie star. He starred opposite luminaries such as Yvonne De Carlo, Ruth Roman, and Joanne Dru. In the 1950s, Rod took the lead as a contemporary crime fighter in three popular TV series: CITY DETECTIVE, STATE TROOPER, and CORONADO 9.
Rod’s son, Tony Cameron, spent his childhood visiting movie sets and mingling with Western film and sports heroes. He encountered the likes of Olympic Champion Buster Crabbe, Alabama’s All-American halfback Johnny Mack Brown, the ever-charming villain Dan Duryea, and leading ladies such as Jill St. John and Audrey Dalton. When Rod made a guest appearance on BONANZA, Tony was on Paramount’s backlot meeting characters like Little Joe and Hoss. Like his father, Tony had an affinity for horses, but his true passion was sports. He was drafted twice by Major League Baseball teams: the Minnesota Twins and the Seattle Mariners.
Rod’s career spanned multiple decades. Tony reminisces about significant moments from his father’s career, including a marital twist that shook Hollywood - Rod divorced his young wife to marry her mother! Dive into these tales and more on this special edition of A WORD ON WESTERNS as Tony brings his father’s film history and a touch of humor to a conversation with Rob Word at the Autry Museum. Recorded on March 14, 2023.

Well, I learned stuff that I didn't have a clue about, and some stuff I knew, but didn't know I knew. I didn't know the name Rod Cameron, and I didn't know know he was a Canadian. His face and his presence that I remembered. But as you were showing stills and posters, I was going I've seen that and I remember that scene. Tony Cameron's remembrances were just so straight forward and matter of fact, that you got a real feel for what his and that life was like. There weren't many boys who wouldn't remember Jill St. John in a bikini, but most of us only experienced it on a screen and not in real life. As always a great episode, that I enjoyed viewing.

ROD CAMERON with his deep commanding voice sure made a good many westerns, sadly not so much the "A" kind though, but he was not alone in that regard. It's good to hear his son relate his experiences on his father's sets, and its good that he has such a great sense of humor about it, especially when you Rob surprised him with the mother and mother in-law marriages. Tony also has the right attitude talking about his Dad and the alcoholism as well as all the movies that he made long before he was born. He certainly was brought up right, I think he should gather up his stories for a book on his father because he has great recall and knows how to engage your interest. THE BOUNTY KILLER and REQUIM FOR A GUNFIGHTER were the kind of cheap-n-cheerful oaters that the legendary A.C. Lyles used to produce over at Paramount, getting all the old western heroes together and giving them work. It's a pity the scripts were so poor and didn't give the old stars a bit more dignity in their roles. ROD CAMERON's career was certainly diverse and without doubt, he worked in HOLLYWOOD when it really had class!

THANK YOU, Tony... it's not easy being a child of a movie star and believe me I came across quite a few having spent 40 years working in HOLLYWOOD doing various jobs from studio-driver to writer and studio historian. I gave special tours of movie location and movie ranches, knew many of the stunt men and crew who's names I noticed on the credits growing up. Like I mentioned you really should write a book even if you have to self-publish, I wrote so many articles on HOLLYWOOD over the years, and I've always included the Good, Bad and the Ugly of any history, otherwise what's the point of sugar-coating it, we're lied too enough already! So many actors, especially in 'B' movies and westerns had an alcohol problem, even the big stars like Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and the Duke... with stuntmen it helped ease the pain from all those horse-falls and alike. It also eased the disappointments in so many careers in this feast or famine business! Again, keep that honest sense of humor Tony, it'll serve you well in life!@@TonyCameron-dg4eh

This was an awesome upload of one of my favorite western stars. Can't really explain it but he and Tim Holt were always high on my "good guys" list for their acting. Of course Mr Cameron was just doing his job and acting but his portrayals of characters with an easy going calm demeanor, made him easy to like as a kid. Was always excited to know (even now) that one of his shows or movies was coming on. BTW , It broke my heart as a kid when I saw him on an episode of Laramie where he fooled everyone and was really a bad guy.

Like Tony indicates around 6:20 Rod Cameron _never just Acted._ He made his roles feel Real to the audience. Thanks for sharing these great stirrings of memories with us all, Rob, and company. 👍👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I think Mr. Word will agree, that growing up in the 50's and 60's, with these Memorable Westerns, and Action Adventure shows on Radio, T.V., and Silver-Screen sure guided a lot of us toward the right path to take in life. Tony Nailed it here 15:55 With what made this entertainment Era so popular with us kids? We got to see Good triumph over Bad 99.9% of the time, and that boosted our spirits to the moon & beyond. Sadly, the majority today's entertainment inundates kids with more Bad, than Good.

Rod Cameron, like Audie Murphy, was never given the quality scripts that they both should have had. Even in the early years you could see he had the charisma and screen presence. He should have been in some higher quality westerns in later years. He was a favourite of mine right from those early B westerns. It was nice to hear Tony mention Dan Duryea, another talented guy in westerns. Another Cowboy actor in the same category is Bill Elliott. Another great interview Rob, keep them coming.

I believe what Tony said about Salvation Army. My own Mom told me that my Dad had told her that the Salvation Army didn't charge the G. I. Such a shame “Requiem for a Gunfighter” can’t be found anywhere, psychically or online. At least, as far as I know. Not only is it the companion piece to “The Bounty Killer,” (an underrated 60s B-Western), and not only is it one of the final films of Serial king Spencer Gordon Bennett, it’s also the final film role for another Western star, Tim McCoy. I wanna see it, darn it!

In Rod's day almost all the western stars were tall. Pretty much a requirement in fact. Jim Arness 6'7", Clint Walker 6'6", Chuck Connors and Fess Parker at 6'5" making John Wayne and Rod at just 6'4" almost a pair uh runts. The most anomalous exception to that being Alan Ladd of course who had to stand on a box and a pair of phone books just to reach 5'10". Yeah, Rod is sorta well known for having married his mother in-law, and Tony's illusidating on that... his grandma being his step mom was sorta funny and sweet at the same time. That screen shot of those comic books titled, "Rod Cameron Western" got me curious to do some research. Turns out Fawcett published 20 issues featuring a fictionalized version of Rod published in England of all places, sold for a dime. And Rod years later at a film convention reflecting on that mentioned how the company used to send him several issues of the comic each month, and thinking not much of it how he'd just give 'em away to the neighborhood kids. Then years later seeing some of those issues one or two of the rarer ones being sold by dealers for hundreds of dollars each.
