Kevin Costner’s epic Western HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA Part 1 with Elizabeth Dennehy

Ойын-сауық

Already labeled “GAME OF THRONES for westerns” by a younger generation, HORIZONS: AN AMERICAN SAGE Part 1 is a sensational journey of survival. With a huge cast of recognizable faces, and some newcomers, Part 1 of Writer/Director Kevin Costner’s anthology has many great moments and, like THRONES, a multitude of very strong characters. Storylines introduce us to different groups, settlers of various ethnicities heading west, soldiers protecting them and the land, Native Americans, Chinese immigrants and others providing a diverse mix of people filmed against a variety of geographical plains.
For filmmaker and storyteller Costner, there is love, violence, death, and humor all mixed together in a compelling anthology set against magnificent vistas of the West. And…it’s only the beginning of the story! Part 2 will be released August 2024. Parts 3 and 4, next summer.
Appearing in all four parts is actress Elizabeth Dennehy as the wife of soldier Michael Rooker. The casting in the film is, as expected, fantastic.
Following her Father, actor Brian Dennehy into the profession, Elizabeth, probably best known for playing Lieutenant Commander Shelby on STAR TREK: TNG and PICARD, Elizabeth had decided to teach Shakespeare for several years until she got the call for HORIZON. How did Elizabeth Dennehy come to be cast? What was her inside track? Her story is amazing.
Join Elizabeth and Rob Word for a conversation about working in the truly epic motion picture, HORIZON, and her work in Robert Urich’s overlooked TV western, THE LAZARUS MAN. Elizabeth was in the two hour movie pilot for the series and has fond memories of Urich and of Santa Fe.

So generous and kind of Elizabeth to sit with us for this interview. Her father was such a talented actor, who entertained audiences for so many years with such great characters & performances. My friend's son, Johnny Yurco, was a stunt actor in "Horizon". Epic production. Great, great film. Native Americans would say that Kevin Cosner _Walks in beauty_

Two years ago Elizabeth graciously visited the town of Hope, British Columbia as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations for the filming of FIRST BLOOD. As part of the celebrations a wonderful statue of her father - as his character Sheriff Will Teasle - was unveiled at the corner of where the police station in the movie stood. She's a class act, so it's great to see her getting the recognition she deserves.

Thanks, rob. She told me about that statue and FIRSTBLOOD anniversary Because we recorded this at home, I was able to continue our discussion longer than the normal 20-25 minute time constraints we had at the Autry. I plan to edit the rest of the conversation into a second episode covering that film and more about her father.

@@AWordonWesterns That's great! The artist who carved the statue did a fantastic job - it REALLY looks like Brian Dennehy, and is far better than the one that was done for the character of Rambo himself. I was very lucky to have seen her father on stage in "Death of a Salesman" during a trip to NYC - just a phenomenal, heartbreaking performance.

I love westerns!! I saw "Horizon: An American Saga, Chapter 1" Saturday. It isn't pretty - though, admittedly, the landscapes are breathtaking. It is an experience that asks its audience to be intently engaged, mentally alert, and emotionally accessible - not passively spoonfed. I appreciate that. I feel invested in these characters and in their stories and, as with a good novel, eagerly anticipate their further development in Chapter 2. Go see it if you love westerns... or... even if you don't.

I'll get my Canadianism out of the way in that area south and west of Calgary, Alberta was made for a true Western location. Open Range is one of my favourite westerns, and it was shot there. So tax reasons aside, Canada isn't solely a movie tax haven, it does have the goods. That being said no matter where a film is shot, in westerns especially the landscape is an epic part of the story. Costner shooting this series of films in locations near where the events took place allows that visual character to inform the actions of the human characters in the story. Costner as a director has proven that he can integrate the landscape into the films he has directed, so that it feels natural that humans are both a part of country and or alien to the location. I'm looking forward to seeing this film and I too hope it is a commercial success, so more westerns make there way to screen. Elizabeth Dennehy is a talented actress, who obvious love for her craft, her dedication to making her character believable, and a real fully formed person is evident. This is a great interview, and made me want to see this film more than I already did.

I've had the good fortune of working on several film productions here in southern Alberta, including Paul Gross's 2007 Passchendaele & yes we're fortunate to live in a amazing region of Canada, but I for one (based on watching the trailers) will not be seeing Horizon. An American Saga. I very well understand the dramatic effect of violence to carry a story line, Lonesome Dove is a wonderful example but life in the real west was much more in tune with "The Good Old Boys" (1995). A personal favorite. The true heroes of the west were men such as Sam Steele & James Walsh of the North-West Mounted Police & women like Anna Armstrong, who almost single-handed, brought the first herd of cattle north of the Medicine Line to present-day Alberta; & on both sides of the line regular everyday folk who never committed an act of violence or witnessed one. But for good or bad, they created the life we enjoy today. - George Kush, UE, CD, @ Trails End, Fort Macleod, Alberta, "First Home of the North-West Mounted Police.

She reminded me of Irene Rich in Fort Apache who played Mrs. Mary O’Rourke, the wife of Sgt. Major O’Rourke played by Ward Bond!! Both she and Michael Rooker played my favorite characters in this amazing epic!! I am going to go back for more again and again until part 2 comes out in August!! A fantastic work!! Lovely lady. Her dad was great in "Silverado", wonderful in fact in everything he did, and one of my favorite actors. Yeah "Lazarus Man". Great premise. Had not Robert Urich gotten ill, (despite another bad hat choice though) would have lasted several seasons I think. The ratings were good, and Urich was in fact promised a second season claiming he was healthy enough to do it despite his diagnosis, but Castle Rock cancelled it anyway. Really too bad because that series had a lot of promise. Fingers crossed that Costner's new series, (And no one does Westerns better than him these days), is a huge hit and starts a trend. We need more good Westerns. And no kidding, the *culture* needs them. More than ever I think.

It won't be a huge hit, hiram, but we all hope it does well and gets western fans into the movie theaters to see it on the BIG screen. It's amazing. Part 1 is an introduction to multiple characters that will probably all converge as the series progresses. That's what his is...a series. We talked to some twentysomethings after the screening and they thought it was "awesome" and compared it to THE GAME OF THRONES with its various factions and storylines. I hope people overlook the reviews of East coast critics and those who don't understand our beloved genre. Kevin sure does, and he proves it once again.

RE: Native Americans - This is not political but "indian" was a misnomer coined by Columbus as when he landed he thought he was in the West Indies. I am excited to see this movie next week. I hope people don't let the length of the film put them off. I think a lot of people like me will probably wait until the holiday weekend to view it, when we have more time and can really devote quality time. It's been a long time since l have been excited to see a movie. First this - then Megalopolis!

I hope so too! Audiences need to remember that this is part one of a saga, not a complete movie. Costner is setting up some terrific characters and storylines that will play out over 4 long episodes. He is a masterful filmmaker.

@KevinCostner-v6l I have been a fan of yours since I first witnessed your dedication and your spirit, artistry and sharing nature, as they come through in your work. I congratulate, and thank you, for these gifts shared. They are God-given. I am able to be a fan because I'm a fan of film art. That's the first thing. You're a gifted film artist and so I, like other film art lovers, recognize your gifts and appreciate them, and appreciate you for sharing them with us. Without men like you, and Marvin, Duval, Stewart, Ford, Eastwood, Wayne, Boyd, Autry, Rogers, Word, Magers, and so many others, as well as many, many women, our beloved genre would have finished riding into the sunset, long ago. So, thanks, very much! "My mother thanks you. My father thanks you. My sister thanks you. And I thank you." What film is that taken from? LOL. And just be ready, please, because, God willing, before this year's end, I'm going to seek an interview from you, as Commander of Operation Cowboy. And it won't be like any other interview you've done, lately, most likely. I serve The Western Genre, and you are a Western Genre luminary. So, while I love your own films, my job is to find out what Westerns inspired you as a kid, and to talk, with you, about that kind of invaluable info, and who were your Western heros, if you don't mind, please. Please, if you're able, give Rob Word an interview; he's probably my best teacher and inspiration regarding Westerns history learning. But, I'm planning on reaching out to you, myself, as soon as possible, because Operation Cowboy requires I try and secure you as a subject guest. If I can, we will secure interviews, with every Hollywood Westerns artist, for 30 minutes, to learn about, and talk about, not so much their own work, but what films, actors, directors first hooked them when they were young. If we elders don't work together, smartly, and make new fans, when they're young, we won't have any new actors, wranglers, directors, producers, and, consequently, Westerns. We need to refocus on family-friendly, traditional Westerns entertainment, in Westerns, else parents won't bring their kids and their kids won't know what a Western genre film looks like, or take them up as a fun hobby, exploring the old films, laughing, smiling, learning American History and Patriotism and Faith. We lose The Western, we lose a huge part of our American Identity, Fabric, and Soul. I've never seen church-goers singing hymns in a Superhero film. And there's never been a 4th Of July celebration horse race, down dirty Main Street, in a Horror movie. Those vital scenes, Dear Fellow Western Lover, only exist in Westerns. And The Western is our only, indigenous genre. It's ours, and we need to preserve it, and use every resource available, together, to make sure it doesn't ride off into the sunset with us. May God bless you. Oh, and by the way, LOL, is this really Kevin Costner or one of his fine staff members? It doesn't matter, because I still thank you. I am just wondering. I am 65, so I know how things often work in this online world, when it comes to busy celebrities. Happy Trails...

I was wondering if she was related to Brian Dennehy when you mentioned him as her father and that he had passed away. I also wondered if Mr Costner was using actual native Americans in this series. I am glad that he did but I do know some people from the Philippines and have wondered why they aren't also playing Indians. Lou Diamond Phillips is of Philippine ancestry and he has played Mexicans and Indians.

NON-SPOILER MINI REVIEW: Saw Kevin Costner's movie HORIZON Part 1 today. It's hard to review it because it's almost all set up for Part 2. There are multiple subplots that seem unrelated, but by the end of Part 1 IMO they're all going to be related in Part 2. I think that's part of the problem. There is action and the subplots move forward, but I think they could've moved forward more quickly. Also, I knew this going in, but many people didn’t , in that Kevin Costner is only in one of the subplots and isn't in the movie until more than halfway through. Overall, this reminded me of a TV miniseries. It's like you've seen the first two nights of the miniseries and as long as you can see the final two nights it'll all come together. All that said, I give it 2 1/2 out of five stars. If the previews of part 2 are as good as the ones they showed, it’s heading to a solid 4 out of five stars. ⭐️ Go see it!

Just saw Horizon part 1 a truly Epic undertaking beautifully filmed. You can add Kevin Costner's name to the list of Great Directors of Westerns, like John Ford, Howard Hawks,George Stevens, Raoul Walsh, and Sam Peckinpah. He should be congratulated for making one Hell of a fine Film . Especially a Western that, for some, is out of favour. I hope people go to se it in the cinema where it deserves to be seen.

I have just seen the movie on your special day 4th July. What an acheivment Wow! The scenery the photography took my breath away. The characters with their different stories which all came together in the story of the first settlers. Amazing how the good the bad and the brutal were all involved as it would have been?. I was awestruck at the colours of the scenes and how the music complimented the film playing in the background. There has been no publicity for this amazing film here in Adelaide Australia but for a premiere opening on an early morning session ❤❤I was pleased with the audience who seemed as impressed as I was. Congratulations ❤🎉

I love his hat. I can never get mine to give me that cool flat brim. It may be a tribute to Duke's hat in THE BIG TRAIL, another classic of western expansion. John Dehner usually was able to get a brim like that too.

@@AWordonWesterns Hats are funny that way. Dehner looked his best in that sort of hat, a style that really worked for him. Same hat though might have looked ridiculous on someone else. The hat Urich wore in "Lonesome Dove" was almost as perfect for him then as Duvall's "Gus" lid was for him in that great mini series. Which he shoulda worn again in "Open Range" I thought, while Costner would have been well advised to reprise his from that show for this new series too. Makes a huge difference in Westerns. The right hat that is. Critical in fact. Did you see "The Old Way" with Nick Cage? Horrible choice of lids, made worse by a comic Mack Sennett mustache in the flash back scenes. Almost ruined that film, which I ended up liking despite those horrendous choices.

@@hiramnoone Right you are. The wardrobe in THE OLD WAY was so bad it defied credibility with the entire film.

Horizon... the worst movie I've seen in years... no character development.. ambiguous dialog... just awful.
