Rocky Mountain National Park - Moraine Campground

The Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) was created in 1915 by an act of Congress. The Park consists of 265,873 pristine acres 1/3rd being fragile alpine tundra. RMNP has 300 miles of hiking trails throughout the Park. one of the most scenic features of RMNP is the Trail Ridge Road which is the highest continuously paved highway in the U.S. and connects Estes Park on the east side to Grand Lake on the west. RMNP has five developed campgrounds:
- Aspen Glen
- Glacier Basin
- Longs Peak
- Moraine Park
-Timber Creek
This video features the Moraine Park Campground which is located near Estes Park and the east entrance of RMNP. Moraine Park has 244 total camping sites, 101 of which are tent sites. The video takes you on a "driving tour" of the campground.
This KZread channel provides the video library which supports its companion website, www.coloradocampgrounds.us.com At the website, you will find pictures and detailed information for each campsite within the Moraine Park Campground, including our favorite campsite recommendations. You will also find Information Pages providing Colorado campers with important information concerning :
1. the laws that impact Colorado campers (gun, alcohol, marijuana),
2. safety recommendations (altitude, fire, wild animals),
3. recommended sites to see in Colorado, and
4. an overview of reservation systems for Colorado campgrounds.

    This video was very helpful in choosing a campsite. You see how far you are from restrooms and other sites. You see if the site is flat and how much room you have. You see where you have shade trees or if your open to the sunshine. You also see what kind of a view you have which is what is so important to many. All these you covered make for a pleasant stay. Great job!

    Thanks! I'll be posting the campsite details on the website over the next couple of days. That posting will include close-up pictures of each campsite, levelness of the campsite, distances from each campsite to the bathroom, water, and trash, the campsite views, the crowdedness and shadiness of each campsite, and a list of our favorite campsites at the Moraine Campground. Plus, the website has tons of information on Colorado laws impacting campers, safety, places to see, etc. I'll also be posting more videos throughout the winter. Stay tuned!

We also provide pictures of each campsite which can be found at campsitephotos.com for some campgrounds, but not all that we review. Anyway, happy camping. I'll have more videos coming this winter.

    Hi, on the recreation.gov site it says first come first serve for May and unavailable for June. Do we have to make reservations for the sites? Or can we just show up?

  • @coloradocampgrounds-whatyo7709

    @coloradocampgrounds-whatyo7709

    Hi. Reservation requirements differ depending on the time of year or campground. During the “off season months” starting in mid October through mid May Moraine is first come first served. Not all of the campsites are open, however. And last summer because of COVID, entire loops were closed. Your best bet is to check the recreation.gov website to see what their restrictions are for 2021. June may be already entirely booked as it is a popular month. Steve

    Yes. You can also transfer to the Hiker Express purple route which runs into the Estes Park Visitors Center.

    How far ahead to book the RV campsites in Moraine Campground . Do they have 30 or 50 amp hook ups, shovers etc .

  • @coloradocampgrounds-whatyo7709

    @coloradocampgrounds-whatyo7709

    Hi Tony, Moraine reservations go quickly. Reservations open up on a six month rolling basis which means you can already reserve sites in early September as of now. Moraine is a “primitive” campground so that means no hookups whatsoever. (People use generators.). There are solar showers only. It sounds like you may have a big rig (your 50 amp question). There are very few spots for large RVs; many big rigs find full hook-up campsites in Estes Park. If you want a thorough review of Moraine, I recommend you check out our website, www.coloradocampgrounds.us.com. It requires a $9.99 subscription which you can cancel if you don’t find that it meets your expectations. Hope this helps. Steve

    Coty, when I camped in Moraine during Covid and RMNP was requiring a reservation to enter the park, I was not required to have a reservation. I only needed to show that I had a camping reservation, so I printed out my confirmation and showed them that. I doubt that they have changed that. Your camping spot is about 40-50 yards from the road, so the hike is not that far. Dogs are permitted in the park on a leash. I am not sure if they are permitted on the trails, although I am sure many campers violate that rule. Know that there are many bears that frequent the park and camping area. They have food storage lockers that you should use, and don’t keep any food or scented items in your tent. Be sure to keep you camp area clean of all garbage. The park rangers wrote two citations for my daughter when she was camping in Moraine. She had left some dirty dishes out at her campsite and the rangers actually confiscated them. She had to go to the Ranger station to retrieve them. They take bears very seriously at RMNP.

    Moraine is a very difficult campground to get into. You must reserve your campsite months in advance for peak summertime periods. I suggest you go to www.campnab.com which monitors cancellations and will notify you when someone cancels a reservation. You will have to pay a fee. I have used campnab several times with success. Good luck.
