Rocky Marciano Was A Savage

Спорт

Highlights and knockouts of the only retired undefeated heavyweight champion of the world in boxing history. Rocky Marciano.
Rocky Marciano was an intimidating monster of a fighter.
An unstoppable force that threw bomb after bomb. Hit him with everything you got, but he will still chase you down. When you're in the ring with Rocky, you are fighting for your life.
He knocked out four legends, giving them the biggest beatings of their career. And retired undefeated as the heavyweight champion of the world. The only person in history to ever do so.
The world remembers him for being a gentleman out of the ring.
But inside the ring, he was something else. He was a savage.

Vengeance - Zack Hemsey

Marciano's opponents: *We see their entire-CAREER record, not a partial record.* Seeing a boxers complete resume gives a more accurate evaluation how good, or how bad they are. Professional boxers can easily be evaluated using grades *A, B, C, D, and F,* which has been used for decades: Lee Epperson - 0 wins 1 loss with 0% KOs *F-LEVEL* Jimmy Weeks - 0 wins 1 loss with 0% KOs *F-LEVEL* Gilbert Cardone - 0 wins 3 losses with 0% KOs *F-LEVEL* John Edwards - 1 win 2 loss with 33% KOs *F-LEVEL* Bill Hardeman - 1 win 6 losses with 0% KOs *F-LEVEL* Humphrey Jackson - 4 wins 2 losses with 28% KOs *F-LEVEL* Harry Haft - 12 wins 8 losses with 35% KOs *F-LEVEL* James Connolly - 12 wins 9 losses with 33% KOs *F-LEVEL* Harry Bilazarian - 15 wins 12 losses with 35% KOs *F-LEVEL* Bob Jefferson - 3 wins 10 losses with 0% KOs *F-LEVEL* Harold Mitchell 4 wins 17 losses with 4% KOs *F-LEVEL* Gilley Ferron - 4 wins 13 losses with 17% KOs *F-LEVEL* Artie Donato - 7 wins 13 losses with 10% KOs *F-LEVEL* Johnny Pretzie - 10 wins 13 losses with 33% KOs *F-LEVEL* Don Mogard - 20 wins 16 losses with 15% KOs *F-LEVEL* Pete Louthis - 32 wins 14 losses with 35% KOs *D-LEVEL* Tommy DiGiorgio - 9 wins 15 losses with 4% KOs *F-LEVEL* Kenne Simmons - 9 wins 22 losses with 12% KOs *F-LEVEL* Art Henri -18 wins 29 losses with 18% KOs *F-LEVEL* Jimmy Walls - 20 wins 41 losses with 7% KOs *F-LEVEL* Ted Lowry - 71 wins 68 losses with 30% KOs *F-LEVEL* Ted Lowry (twice) - 71 wins 68 losses with 30% KOs *F-LEVEL* Gino Buonvino - 24 wins 15 losses with 10% KOs *F-LEVEL* Gino Buonvino (twice) - 24 wins 15 losses with 10% KOs *F-LEVEL* Joe Dominic - 18 wins 12 losses with 33% KOs *F-LEVEL* Eldridge Eatman - 22 wins 21 losses with 22% KOs *F-LEVEL* Willis Applegate -12 wins 16 losses with 13% KOs *F-LEVEL* Lee Savold - 104 wins 45 losses with 50% KOs *D-LEVEL* Phil Muscato - 56 wins 23 losses with 25% KOs *D-LEVEL* Bill Wilson - 56 wins 27 losses with 51% KOs *D-LEVEL* Johnny Shkor - 31 wins 19 losses with 42% KOs *F-LEVEL* Fred Beshore - 35 wins 17 losses with 24% KOs *D-LEVEL* Jimmy Evans - 18 wins 8 losses with 50% KOs looks okay until you see *he fought 10 opponents with 10 fights or less.* Eddie Ross - 19 wins 5 losses with 72% KOs looks okay until you see *he fought 10 debuting amateurs and 7 other opponents with 10 fights or less.* Bob Quinn - 20 wins 4 losses with 58% KOs looks okay until you see *he fought 13 opponents with 10 fights or less.* Bernie Reynolds - 53 wins 13 losses with 49% KOs looks okay until you see *he fought 30 opponents with 15 fights or less.* Pat Richards - 24 wins 9 losses with 39% KOs looks okay until you see *he fought 20 opponents with 10 fights or less.* Carmine Vingo - 16 wins 2 losses with 38% KOs looks good until you see *ALL 16 wins came against F-LEVEL opponents.* Don Cockell - 66 wins 14 losses with 46% KOs looks okay until you see the majority of his career was at middleweight and light heavyweight. *By the time he faced Marciano he was suffering from severe glandular disorders that wreaked havoc with his physique. He was sallow-skinned, fat, and had a nasty boil on his neck.* Harry Matthews - 90 wins 7 losses with 58% KOs is a good *B-LEVEL* resume. Problem is *he was a natural middleweight moonlighting at light heavyweight.* Matthews weighed 130 lbs vs. Joey Parks who also weighed 130. *Shouldn't one have to beat credible Heavyweight opponents to be respected as a legitimate Heavyweight champion?* *Even little Rocky's 5 best opponents Walcott-Charles-Moore-Layne-LaStarza lost (94) times and were KO'd (28) times!!!* (( In the old days, ringers could boost their income by fighting repeatedly. Padding your record against weak opponents can yield good results- the real stumblebums are the guys who make a career of losing. In small-time fights, the less-talented fighter often gets the bulk of the cash; he is, after all, providing a valuable service by losing so reliably--The Ring Magazine )) (( Promoters looking for a way to get their prizefighters a big payday will first invest thousands of dollars in padding his numbers by putting him up against “opponents”-guys with truly horrendous records. A guy who’s undefeated at 37-0, for example, might not be any better than a more seasoned boxer with a lousy record -- by Daniel Enberg | BoxRec )) *Marciano never faced an elite fighter in his prime. Name one, just one prime elite fighter Marciano beat?? Failing to name even one proves my comment rings true. Show me any respected boxing publication or analyst that claims Walcott Charles Moore were in their prime when they fought Marciano??*

Consider that in the December 1962 Ring magazine poll of 40 boxing experts it was Jack Dempsey that was rated the # 1 Heavyweight of all time with Joe Louis 2nd, Jack Johnson 3rd and Rocky Marciano finishing a distant 9th, way behind Dempsey. If he was considered 9th in 1962 how does he propel to the top 5, when since then we have had Muhammad Ali who faced much tougher competition, the big power hitting George Foreman, Larry Holmes who made 20 title defenses, the bigger, faster and more powerful Mike Tyson, and the giant Lennox Lewis who at 6’ 5” 245 pounds would enjoy a 60 pound weight advantage over Rocky? This is a key point. Nat Fleischer rated Marciano at # 10, Charley Rose rated him at # 9, McCallum's survey of old-timers had him at # 9. No major historian who saw Maricano in their lifetime thought he was a top 9 all time heavyweight and 67 years have passed since Rocky retired... WTF? HOW DOES LITTLE ROCKY GO FROM 9TH PLACE DURING THE EARLY 1960s TO TOP 5 IN 2023? Because his ranking is determined by modern computer metric algorithms. Problem is this man-made program was coded to exclude "WEIGHT" from the equation. That's why tiny-165 pound 'Heavyweight' champion Bob Fitzsimmons from the 1800s is ranked ahead of giant Riddick Bowe. How's it possible 185 pound Marciano ranks higher than Fury Holmes Lewis Vitali Wladimir Foreman Bowe Tyson etcetera? Well now we all know why!!! Even though Heavyweight champions ranged from 165 (Fitzsimmons) to 328 (Valuev) pounds, ranking bodies still exclude "WEIGHT" from their metric, even though they 'Still Acknowledge Seventeen (17) Different "WEIGHT" Classes', imagine that. "AGE" is another code omitted from the metric. The algorithms only see Marciano fought 4 Hall of Famers and went 49-0, it doesn't see Archie Moore was 41 years "old" and "light" heavyweight moonlighting at Heavyweight. That's why ALL Heavyweight rankings should be looked upon with a grain of salt. Unfortunately Rocky fanboys cling to his fake rankings as if it were life and death.

The remaining 12 retired five fights or less after facing Marciano. What I don't know is of them how many sited retiring due to Marciano be it injuries, lack of will, or whatever. Also I struggle with obscure guys like Pretzie who didn't do well after Marciano but fought on for another 1-8 fights. He very well could have been ruined by Marciano but kept fighting for money or some such. It's hard to get reasons for why some of these guys retired. Then there's guys like Cockell who didn't retire solely because of Marciano, but Marciano was one of many reasons. I'm not real sure where to place them. Retired by Marciano or retired by circumstance or both. I'm not positive about this, but it looks like if someone faces Marciano probability is very much in favor of Marciano winning by knockout into retirement.

And of course we mustn't forget 5' 9″ 178/179 lb (vs. Jefferson, Ferron, Cardone, DiGiorgio) light heavyweight Rocky Marciano with the shortest ever 67" flyweight reach. According to multiple sources (one being Rocky's biographer John Cameron) Rocky was actually 5' 9". Shocking isn't it. Those other small guys weren't so small after all. They already had the natural weight or natural height and reach advantage so they were able to assimilate into the Heavyweight division with few to no problems. On the other hand little Marciano had some serious dwarfism problems going on with his reach. Simply put Marciano's bone structure was too short to assimilate effectively. *Don't believe for a second Rocky was 5' 10" bcz Joe Louis was at least 5 inches taller! He's the greatest p4p fighter of them all.

Marciano was on a “no-lose” mission to achieving greatness and he did so by simply out-working and out-conditioning all fighting foes. His work ethic was nothing short of remarkably consistent and disciplined: hours of running, gym work, sparring, push-ups and sit-ups, countless medicine-ball thumps to the gut. Marciano was committed to his training regimen. Rocky is also remembered and honored for his class as an individual, not only his 49-0. He never boasted or ridiculed his opponents. Regardless what others may think, Rocky Marciano was a great champion.

I've given him everything I have and he's taken it like it was nothing... and he just keeps coming and hitting me like a sledgehammer... there's nothing I can do here but get hit..." All the other tricks and tactics that worked- even dominated- against other fighters just didn't work on him. He didn't care if you juked or slipped and bobbed and weaved, he kept coming. Counterpunch him? Go ahead, he'd eat it and blast you 3, 4, 5 more times in return. But OK, so you'll try to stand outside and pick him apart? After all, he has such a short reach; he'd literally RUN at you and your punches meant nothing... but OK, OK, so you want to get in close and make it a dogfight with Rocky Marciano? Enjoy your broken jaw and liquefied ribcage because thats the LAST thing you want to do against him. I don't know how a dude like this would stand up today, with today's caliber athletes and refinements to the sweet science that have taken place since his era but man, in spite of that, he may still be the best ever...

During that span, he had victories over Joey Maxim ( H.O.F.), Jersey Joe Walcott ( H.O.F.), Gus Lesnevich, Pat Valentino, Joe Louis ( H.O.F.), Rex Layne, Jimmy Bivins, and the murderous Bob Satterfield. Marciano's prime 186lb punching-power doesn't come close to a 277--245lb Ibeabuchi Lewis Vitali Foreman Fury type of heavier weighted power which effortlessly produces more torque-n-leverage. If u had to break up large boulder would u use 8oz ball peen hammer or 8 lb sledgehammer? Size matters otherwise boxing wouldn't have 18 different weight classes. Featherweights would be fightin middleweights and cruisers would be fightin Super Heavies. There are no height divisions, age divisions or reach division, because weight at heavyweight boxing is one of the most important factor. Super Heavyweights are increasing because eastern European fighters are now allowed to fight in USA since around 2000 and international travel is much easier compared to 30 40 50 years ago. Perfect example would be Hall of Fame Klitschko brothers that dominated Heavyweight boxing for 20YRS!!!! 72yr old boxing legend Larry Holmes said, "there should be a size limit on heavyweights after giant Tyson Fury took over the division." A new Bridgerweight division between 200 and 224 lbs has been added because too many 215 lb heavyweights have complained. We'll never see little cruiserweights 181 lb Charles, 182 lb Patterson, 184 lb Marciano as heavyweight champions again. Heavyweight boxing has evolved, "SIZE MATTERS" like-it-or-not.

@@Stout_Krout_HinesburgVT6337 The difference between Marciano and Ibeabuchi is not the same between a 8oz hammer and a sledge, the difference is a lot smaller more like a 6lb sledge and an 8lb sledge, they can both get the job done the 6lber can be swung more often and faster, no one is going to argue the law of physics but Marciano is more than capable of knocking out anyone that ever lived, in fact with the right technique 99% of humans that ever lived are capable of knocking each other out. Whilst height and weight matter it would be impossible to separate two people of the same gender so much in terms of fighting ability nature wouldn't allow it, this isn't a human vs a bear this comparing human vs human.

Marciano said his best weight he ever fought at was, "186lbs." Tyson was 220lbs at his fastest & best. About 235lbs at his heaviest. Rocky didn't have the speed or footwork to keep Tyson away or the skill or technique to keep him off. And saying that Rocky was tough… well,, tough can get you killed in the ring against a super power puncher with superior skills. This fight wouldn't last 2 rounds with a prime Tyson. And a non-prime Tyson would still be heavier and stronger. Rocky never faced anyone of merit who was near their prime. You wouldn't want Tyson to be your first. Bigger, faster, stronger. With malicious intent. No way Rocky would beat a prime Iron Mike.

@KEEP BOXING CLEAN AND RACISM FREE! I agree with you about weight being a big factor and speed playing a big part in boxing my friend but if I could counter that if that's okay id like to point out some times power plus great or good timing can counter that or in a better case lots of pressure while throwing many power shots to the arms and body would imo eventually slow down alis speed especially considering ali even said at marciano old age of 46 his arms were hurting after they were just playing around now I believe ali could beat marciano by points and I also think marciano could win on points I don't think either could knock each other out both had huge heart grit and a insane chins now I believe ali would have to just dance as much as he can to stay away from rocky but I think rocky would get to him eventually with some shots which would hurt ali and slow him down making it's a more of a brawl which suits marciano style but ali could brawl also so it's very hard to pick a winner imo but I'll say this if ali user his rope a dope tack tick he would get stopped because marciano never gets tired and that's where his weight of being smaller comes in to play and only then is when it comes in to play because it's a fact marciano had legendary conditioning would you agree ? Both men did imo but for the pace marciano set with his style it was incredible to see how he could throw so many power shots in later rounds and not get tired. All in all both great fighters and I couldn't pick one to win both are legends of the sports and amazing at there own crafts:)

@KEEP BOXING CLEAN AND RACISM FREE! I agree with you that he got lucky with that foreman with and would lose a rematch at that time in his life but I have to respectfully disagree with a few things my friend I do think marciano hit very hard for his size and for imo any weight size in the heavy weight era not because he was big but just the was his bone structure was build he was very big boned his hands were very solid and very big his fore arms were massive in size and the way he punched with his shorter arms I think gave him a lot of pop to his punches imo respectfully. I think rocky didn't have great boxing skill early on in his career but imo I do believe he was becoming a great boxer from the second wallcot fight on words especially his last fight which was him in his prime he could slip punches very well and could counter with his right hook/overhand/uppercut very well his timing was getting much better and his defence was much more solid but what set him a part was his constant offence never slowing down could hurt you bad with both hands threw awkward punches from odd angles his archie more fight in round 6 he was just throwing power punch after punch just overwhelming pressure just legendary work rate I do believe wallcot was not in his prime when rocky beat him but I do believe he has obviously much more experience and iq but could not take the pressure rocky put out on him now joe Louis was riding a 8 fight win streak before there fight but rocky was too young for joe and had the right style imo to always beat him regardless of age and primes. Now Charles this is a interesting one Charles was close in age with rocky and deffienlty not out his prime and had much more experience then rocky but just isn't a better fighter then rocky that's the truth wallcot thought Charles would beat him in there rematch but got kod in the rematch now for archie Moore he was 37 I believe when they fought or 38 and rocky was 32 and in his 7th year as a pro while archie was a legend and ko machine who wanted marciano called him out for the fight so now much age gap but huge gap in experience for Moore which b shout favour him but didn't because rocky was prime and got caught early but showed his true hard and work rate and power and relentless pace to ko Moore in the later rounds imo I say beating 4 hall of famers makes you a legend no matter what age or anything. Now I believe a prime ali could dance but not for too long he would get hit evetually in 15 rounds rocky would fight a way to hit him it's been proven ali could be hit in his prime any fighter can be so id say 5 times ali wins out of 10 and rocky wins 5 imo both legends can't disrespect either man and I respect your opinion as well my friend

Joe Louis was the biggest name on Marciano’s resume, but he was 37 years old and had lost much. By the time of their fight the once legendary Louis had “long since lost his once devastating punch” as Nat Fleischer wrote. This is true because Louis depended greatly on speed, timing and sense of distance for his hitting power. His lost reflexes robbed him of his explosiveness and therefore his punching power.

I get a sniffle and I feel like I'm on death's door. Women can still go work full time, and do all the super mom duties with full blown flu. A relentless style impervious to pain. Rocky had an indomitable heart that enabled him to withstand savage beatings. And he had a punch that was like a near-death experience. He trudged into the ring like a factory worker punching a time clock and started pounding on the wall in front of him until it crumbled. Marciano's monastic monk like year round daily runs and 3/5 month preparation per fight was unprecedented. Never seeking refuge in a clinch and couldn't be hurt he broke spirits. Rocky beat them up, rearranged their bone structure and knocked them out. It was a hellish experience fightin the Rock as he was so damned destructive.

Rocky ran at least 5 miles a day, 365, with several pounds of sand built into each leather combat boot designed by a local shoe mogul. When a fight was signed he'd run 8 to 10 miles, and usually the last week up it to 12 miles. He said, "if you train like i do, your legs will carry you 40 rounds." Rocky would also include running uphill forward, downhill backwards, repeat. I remember reading that quote several decades ago. Then out of nowhere i recently stumbled across an isolated vid and Rocky said, "this is where the road work pays off. If your up at the bust of dawn everyday while your training, running up and down hill, your legs will carry you 40 rounds." On top of that Rocky liked to walk another 5 to 10 miles in the late afternoon or evening. And he did all this in the hilly country around Grossinger's, where he trained. It was Rocky's obsession with conditioning that kept him training 365 days a year and this dedication gave him stamina never seen before in a fighter. It allowed him to set a blistering pace that no opponent could match.

'The Marciano Tapes #6' -- Rocky said, "it so happened that Vingo hit his head on the flooring, and it sent him unconscious. He was paralyzed a little bit in his fingers and hands. There was a change in the ruling, from then on padding was put on the ring of the flooring." So after all this time it was the wooden plywood flooring that partially paralyzed Vingo, not Marciano's punch. You will always find them before you, maybe staggering, blood-filled, ready to step on. Sport teaches you cannot always win... They do not care, do not believe that, and always win: with a broken nose, with closed eye, a blood-red mouth. Rocky was like this. Rough, wild, fearless. His straight right punch was equivalent to a 9th grade richter. His left hook punch was an electroshock. He was not there to lose. An invincible.

Gypsy King Fury would keep little white Rocky at arm's length and force him back whenever he felt crowded. He'd jab, turn and bewilder him for as long as wanted, and if Fury felt so inclined, he'd walk him down Kronk style and smash out a stoppage. And none of this, "if he can't reach his head he'll go to the body", either. That's just bull****. Fury's lead would keep Marciano too far away as is. He ain't getting the opportunities to impose his workrate and definitely doesn't hit hard enough to stop him. Fury jabs him into oblivion. Heck, Fury can land 4 or 5 jabs a round and win the round. I guess that shows what you know about Rocky Marciano's boxing career. The Rock was indeed a savage and a great heavy champ, but this video is so chopped up and misrepresentative that it is in essence a farce. For example: It show the brutal knock down of Marciano in the first round of his title challenge with Walcott, then is spliced together with Rocky saying "I remember that punch more then any other." But in truth that is not the punch Rocky was talking about. There are many examples of Reznick misrepresenting Marciano's career, always in a positive light, but a misrepresentation in any case. Hardly a 'master class'.

BoxRec has officially listed these Rocky Marciano opponents as *'middleweights'* and *'light'* heavyweights: Eddie Ross - division *"Middleweight"* Harry Bilazarian - division *"Middleweight"* Archie Moore - division *"Light heavy"* Harry Matthews - division *"Light heavy"* Harry Haft - division *"Light heavy"* Ted Lowry - division *"Light heavy"* Willis Applegate - division *"Light heavy"* Bob Jefferson - division *"Light heavy"* Ezzard Charles - division *"Light heavy"* Apparently after 23 years BoxRec recently *changed Ezzard Charles's division classification to "heavy" several days ago.* It don't matter if they change it to the *"Super-Heavy" division* because he still only weighed *'181-lbs'* when he won his title and there is nothing BoxRec or anyone can do or say to change that Fact. Did the Klitschko brothers and Lennox Lewis have the luxury of fightin middleweights and light heavyweights? Of course not. *Shouldn't one have to beat credible Heavyweight opponents to be respected as a legitimate Heavyweight champion?* Marciano's small era was a huge contributing factor towards the *"cruiserweight"* division being created. *There comes a point the size disparity becomes a bridge too far even for outstanding smaller boxers.* Little Rocky was only 31 when he *"QUIT"* during his prime. He only fought a measly 7 years while everyone else fought 20 years. Many Heavyweights could have retired undefeated if they had *"QUIT"* after only 7 years. What Marciano did to his family is *"unforgivable"* During his retirement speech and his appearance on the Ed Sullivan show he said, "I want to spend more time with my family." *That's not True. It was all a lie. He immediately abandoned his kids and wife to sleep with thousands then left them penniless--@ 1993/08/23 THE ROCK - Sports Illustrated Vault | SI*

Little Marciano will always be my favorite fighter but I'm a realist that understands his limitations. The several ATG fighters that Rocky did face were all light heavyweights that simply moved up for the money because the division was completely void of any quality authentic 200+ lb Heavyweights. @@bobbyd1478 Marciano was a beast! His boxing skills were never that polished. He would missed half of the punches he threw and he had a very short reach. What made him stand out were two things. His training: Marciano would start off with a five mile run in the beginning of his training, then gradually increased to ten miles .He would increased that to twelve miles .Not flat running all the time either. He would run up steep hills and over rough terrain. In an interview once,he said that he trained his legs to do twenty rounds if he had to and championship fights then were standard fifteen rounders. He had a special bag that weighed three hundred pounds and he would wailed away at it until he was exhausted. He was the first guy in the gym and the last to leave. His sparring partners feared getting into the ring because he hit so hard. He knew his shortcomings and he worked doubly hard to correct them. His Heart: Marciano said several times that he absolutely ,postively, and passionately refused to lose. There were fights where he was a bloody mess and beaten almost to a pulp. But he refused to lose and he never did as a pro....How bad ass is that?? Rocky was tough for several reasons. The power of his punches was almost unreal. Joe Louis who beat many of boxing's great fighters said rocky hit harder than anyone and he said that kid could beat anyone. Walcot said he hit harder than joe Louis. Arcie Moore said he felt that at that time he was UNBEATABLE. Not after he fought rocky. He said he was wam bam didnt give a damn. He said he hit like a dump truck. All the guys who fought him said he coukd hit just as hard in the later rounds. Rocky retired 13 pro fighters. None of the greats he fought were actually old. They were in there 30s or younger. Not much older than rocky.. rocky started old. His opponents said you just couldn't hurt him and he never stopped coming. His critics fail to relize that Rocky was a little bigger than it first seems. He starved himself to fight that light. He walked around probably over 200lbs after the weigh in without steroids or enhancements. Rockys punching power was tested by the US TESTING COMPANY. He was found to have over 995 foot lbs in his punches. Without gloves it would have been about 1000! That's the same velocity as bullets. Comparable to a 44 magnum!!!! He had maximum unbeaten stamina and he was super hard to hurt! Rockys style being an in fighter called for him to come in low and get close. This made a tall mans reach or jab useless in a fight. Atleast when it's going rockys way. He was an expert at controlling head movement.. he always drove his opponents back towards the rope and just beat them down. Walcot and loius just had no more fight in them after fighting rocky. Rocky acttualy hurt people permanently. He often broke bones, knocked out teeth inside of mouth pieces or atleast busted vessels in there arms to wear they could no longer defend themselves. He even put a boxer names bingo in a coma. Floyd patterson would not fight heavyweight until rocky retired. After actually looking into rocky I came to believe that rocky is totaly underrated! Google Don Turner on rocky Marciano. He trained holyfield and the klitscos. He said rocky hits harder than anyone he has ever seen. He also said rocky could beat all these guys today. That says alot. I've found that everyone who ever fought the rock or seen him fight put him on the at the top of great fighters. Most of them put him on the very top. You have a guy who litterly hits like bullets, never ever gets tired and has a head made of steal who cares if he was 40 lbs lighter than an opponent. The big guys that rocky fought who out weighed him by 30 or 40 lbs never even get talked about. Burt suger said he seen rocky getting hit so hard in the stomach it lifted both feet off the canvas but never fazed rocky. He had a high tolerance for pain. Burt suger also said rockys right hand punch was the most dangerous weapon ever brought into the ring. Rocky was most fighters nightmare.

He was released after 22 months and then allowed to rejoin the military for the duration of 1946 in order to receive an honorable discharge. After Marciano abruptly quit boxing during his prime he immediately abandoned his family to sleep with thousands, then left them penniless. What a SOAB. With a quality Super Heavyweight? I have. Do the homework people, 90% of Rocky's opponents were journeymen and the rest were light heavyweights or has beens on their downward slide. So 49-0 isn't that fantastic considering his opposition and the fact he 'Quit' during his 'Prime'. 49-0, so what. Carlos Monzon started his professional career 16-3, then went unbeaten for his next 80 fights. Sugar Ray Robinson went 40-0 before losing to Jake Lamotta, then went undefeated for his next 88 fights. Willie Pep went 62-0 before losing. Cesar Chavez went 89-0 before losing his first fight. Today, Super Heavyweights King Fury and Ike Ibeabuchi are still undefeated.

A guy who’s undefeated at 37-0, for example, might not be any better than a more seasoned boxer with a lousy record."* -- The Ring Magazine *THE WORST 37-0 EVER.* Roland was well protected and very carefully managed. There are so many names from his era conspicuously missing from his record. LaStarza's only claim to fame was having lost a close decision to Marciano. *End of story.* "His reputation was built on the first Rocky fight. Although he had a long winning streak at the beginning of his career, there are no tough names on his record. After the first Marciano fight he could have forced the issue by meeting top fighters. He refused fights with Charles, Moore, Clarence Henry, Bob Baker etc. Lost and avenged to overstuffed light heavy Dan Bucceroni and to light heavy Rocky Jones and looked terrible against Jones in the rematch. The Jones win and a victory over the faded Rex Layne gave him the credentials to meet Rocky for the title. A fight I am told Rocky was more intent on giving Roland a beating for all of the talk that he "was afraid" to meet LaStarza again. Look at LaStarza's record there are no names on it except for Marciano. I have the complete film of the Jones rematch and believe me LaStarza looked terrible. LaStarza NEVER fought a dangerous opponent except Marciano and thats a fact if you know any of the fighters from his era. I am not saying that LaStarza was a coward but he (or, excuse me, his management) refused matches with Henry, Charles, Baker, and Archie Moore. In an article in RING magazine after his career LaStarza admitted as much, saying he wouldn't take those matches because he "deserved" a rematch with Marciano and thought he was offered the other matches by the IBC only because they were trying to knock him out of "his rightful shot at Marciano." Boo Hoo Hoo. Real, confident fighters go out and prove they deserve their shot by beating dangerous fighters to force a showdown with a champion." -- *Chuck Hasson Boxing Historian and Philly Boxing Founder* LaStarza was coming off a loss and a win against 14-9-2 Rocky Jones. Layne had lost to the unrated 12-2 Willie James and a light heavyweight contender. The winner of this garbage gets a world title shot against a guy who already beat BOTH of them. *Heavyweight contenders today aren't rated at the top after they lose to unranked journeymen and light heavyweights.* *LaStarza vs. Layne (uploader William Walker)* reminds me of watching two midwest *club fighters* fightin a *4* rounder on an old ESPN card from Muncie, In. *Two guys who were not well schooled, standing in front of each other acting like they were insulted if the other guy missed them with a punch. A lot of right hand leads, a lot of jabs with the rear foot leaving the canvas, little/no counter punching, just two guys willing to get hit but showing little boxing skill.* Look how bad Rex Layne swings and misses. *What an oaf.*

"ESPN Ringside - Rocky Marciano" -- @35:01 Bert Sugar said, *"His trainer, Ray Arcel said, that even now, at this stage in 51, and then on into the middle 50s, you could see the beginning, the traces of the disease, that would later claim his life, Lou Gehrig's disease in Charles."* William Dettloff’s book Ezzard Charles: A Boxing Life documents that Charles first felt *weakness in his limbs, and some numbness, in 1951 - before he battled Rocky Marciano, Charles was already suffering from the symptoms of ALS* (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease.” It is notable when around the time Charles lost to Joe Walcott in 1951, *Dettloff records that his family had noticed signs of what they would learn later was ALS.*

Ezzard Charles was diagnosed with ALS in 1968 and died from the disease in 1975. To think that he had it in 1951and lived with it for 24 years is highly improbable. By comparison, Lou Gehrig first noticed the symptoms in 1938, He was diagnosed in 39 and passed away just 2 years later in 41 But, hey your fictional story belittles Marciano so you go with that right?

Carmine Vingo - 16 wins 2 losses with 38% KOs looks good until you see ALL 16 wins came against F-LEVEL opponents. Don Cockell - 66 wins 14 losses with 46% KOs looks okay until you see the overwhelming majority of his career was at middleweight and light heavyweight. *By the time he faced Marciano he was suffering from severe glandular disorders that wreaked havoc with his physique. He was sallow-skinned, fat, and had a nasty boil on his neck.* Harry Matthews - 90 wins 7 losses with 58% KOs is a good B-LEVEL resume @ welterweight and middleweight. Matthews was a-natural lightweight, welterweight, middleweight moonlighting at light heavyweight. Matthews weighed 130 lbs vs. Joey Parks who also weighed 130. *Shouldn't one have to beat credible "Heavyweight" opponents to be respected as a legitimate "Heavyweight" champion?* *Even little cruiserweight Marciano's best three opponents Charles Moore Walcott, ((two light heavyweights and one cruiserweight)) lost ((68)) times and were KO'd ((20)) times!* IT'S CLEAR AS DAY WHY HE WENT 49-0: D AND F-LEVEL AMATEUR WALK-IN BOXERS TAKIN-DIVES AND PADDIN RECORDS FOR $$$...NUMBERS DO NOT LIE *In the old days, ringers could boost their income by fighting repeatedly. Padding your record against weak opponents can yield good results- the real stumblebums are the guys who make a career of losing. In small-time fights, the less-talented fighter often gets the bulk of the cash; he is, after all, providing a valuable service by losing so reliably--The Ring Magazine* Little 184-lb cruiserweight Marciano never faced an elite fighter in his prime. Name one, just one prime elite fighter Marciano beat? Failing to name even one proves my comment rings true. Show me any respected boxing publication or analyst that claims Walcott, Charles, Moore were in their prime when they fought Marciano?

More than 100 heavy champs in boxing, and he is the only undefeated/undisputed/perfect champ. Man, that has got to count for something.

Unfortunately he was not a genuine Heavyweight! Light heavyweight Charles weighed a massive 181-lbs when he won his Super Heavyweight title. And little Rocky weighed a huge 184-lbs, lol.

Y'all like my new VR1000 !?! It's a water cooled fuel injected v twin with overhead cam and 4 valves per cylinder, it has 13.5 : 1 compression ratio, pumps out a little over 100 ponies and does 0-60 in 3.2 seconds. It taks a man to ride this bike, that's why I just sold it. Had to. My Mexican American wife Mexicali Margot made me. She's right because i only weigh a very skinny 137 pounds and have never riden a motorcycle. My nickname is Toothpick My real name is David Frost, I use all these other aliases just to make the white man mad. I also had to sell all my clothes, shoes, and my terrific collection of cigarette butts. But that's what my wife Margot wanted. And I do anything for her. She may be 86 years old, but she's toothless and gives a great bj, I can't really get it up anymore so she just kind of gums around and slobbers on it. It feels pretty good tho.

It's not the skill that makes Marciano so great. It's the tenacity, the constant pressure for minutes on end.

And his cardio. The guy could go all 15 rounds and still swinging heavy punches. No heavyweight or cruiserweight in history will have the same cardio as the Rock.

James Todd "He would bleed with out protest and ache without complaint." "Raised in Brockton, Massachusetts. The son of Italian immigrants. A child of the depression who carried lunch daily to a father he'd see slumped over a shoemaking machine. Marciano wanted so much more for himself and his family." "Marciano appeared to attract pain because he so often walked into punches but he compensated for a lack of artistry with round after round of relentless attack. Perhaps Rocky Marciano endured what others did not because what he feared far more than the pounding was the possibility of losing. The fear of being something less than the heavyweight champion of the world." "He never changed from the time we were kids. He never changed. He was Rocky!" - In This Corner
