Rockstar's Most Underrated Game | The Warriors Retrospective

In 2005, Rockstar released the Warriors to decent praise. Rockstar is known for their big budget AAA titles so The Warriors fell to the way side and the cult following of it isn't quite as large as games like Manhunt or Bully. Frankly, this game isn't talked about enough and I thought I would share some of my thoughts on it and why I think it's one of Rockstar's best titles and most underrated in this brief little retrospective analysis.
P.S. - My mouse cursor was in like 80% of captured footage, so if you see some weird editing over the clips...that'll be my foolishness.

My uncle Greg Bick was the Creative Director on this title. He was a great guy and the coolest uncle for a young gamer kid to have. Unfortunately he passed away back in 2008. From time to time I like to search for new videos that show love to this game, and I'm never disappointed. Glad to see his work standing the test of time.

One cool little thing about this game is the Warriors HQ, where you are in between levels, and you can work out, talk to the other members, etc. while there's music coming from the radio and you hear everybody chatting. It really feels alive. It's kind of like a prototype of the gang camp in RDR2, which is probably my favorite thing in any video game ever.

the most mindblowing detail in this game is the fact that you can punch the hat out of someone and wear it yourself, and every single warrior has a line about doing that, not only that but you can also punch cowboy and steal his hat, which he will comment about, saying stuff like "come on man give it back". if he succesfully gets his hat back he will say: "glad to have you back buddy" or my favorite "maybe i should wear a chin strap"

I played the crap out of this game, and its my favorite brawler of all time. possibly because its not just a brawler but all these other things as well. But mostly because of the well told story. I got invested in the Warriors. Their fiery young blood, punk culture, and their desperate struggle to get home that one awful night when everyone was out to get them. I saw the movie because of this game and I think the Game told the story better by bleaching out the characters and making the epic moments even more epic.

The incredible experience of running through the streets of NYC on a cloudy night, pursuing enemies as part of a gang to establish its reputation, is truly noteworthy. The presence of police sirens in the background and women shouting from their windows, pleading to keep the noise down in the middle of the night, creates a unique atmosphere that no other game can replicate. Among all video games, The Warriors holds a special place as my absolute favorite, not just among Rockstar's titles but across the entire gaming industry. I'm now 29 years old and have grown up playing this game on various PlayStation consoles, from PS2 to PS3, PS4, and now PS5. Unfortunately, it suffers from frequent glitches, and I wish there was a remastered version available. I am even considering reaching out to Rockstar via email to explore the possibility of a remaster, pooling our efforts together. The Warrior spirit is alive and strong in this game.

I grew up in the 80’s and this film is a much loved element to that. What impressed me about Rockstar is that they don’t just pay close homage to the movie, but also there’s other elements from NY of that era. Anyone who was into graffiti art will notice an ‘IZ’ throw up on a train (a major NY graffiti guy) and some of the graffiti dialogue is clued in with correct lingo. Someone in the Rockstar team put that in there. They (and the filmmakers) likely read ‘getting up’ by Craig Castleman which discussed the socio gang dynamic of NY of that era. The riffs to my mind are an homage to the black spades , the biggest gang and known to take all their chapters down to Coney to show their force. That scene with the riffs at the end is reminiscent of testimonials in the book. This game was a real labour of love by Rockstar.

This game was a blast. Three memories stick out for me over my time with it. 1. Blackout, mostly I avoided the police and never had to fight them. It was only during the riots in blackout when you wind up going head to head in an unavoidable way. fighting one riot cop in a back alley was one of the most brutal fist fights I encountered. 2. When picking gangs, and characters in horde mode the dirty cops were treated as any other gang. It was actually fun stepping into the boots of the same riot cop that beat my ass. 3. The bosses. The Furies Umpire comes down on you like sauron from lord of the rings. Wheels is literally just a guy in a wheelchair with a revolver, but the fight with him is just so nail biting and brutal.

That's true it was an interesting mechanic. I just found you don't need to use it too often. I loved this game. I won a Fight Night Round 3 tournament at my local Blockbuster in 2006 and 1st prize was any 1 game in the store was yours. The guy i fought in the Championship round already had this game picked out and laying on the counter like it was his before the tournament even started. Talk about confidence. I took Duran and he took Roy Jones Jr. He knocked me down in the first round and when i got up he tried to finish me but he didn't know that i was better at defense than offense in this game and i dragged his ass to the 7th round and a stoppage because his eye was cut too badly to continue. TKO but I'll take it. He told me i really sucked at this game and i took that to be the best compliment I'd gotten all year. So i start to walk out with that Warrior's game on PS2 and he goes, So u wanted that too? I said, yeah thanks for bringing it up here for me.

I remembered seeing the movie one late night as a kid. Then years later I played the game and didn’t realize they were connected until I played it. I’ll never forget my older brother hearing the “come out and play scene” he started shouting “waaaaariors, come out and play-ay!!!!” From the other room. He came in and thought I was watching the movie and was stoked to see they had made a game.

Warriors is one of my favorite games of all times. Such a great brawler. I only wish Rockstar would give it a special remaster in the future.
