This area became a problem when they were upgrading the road and found that the cliff was unstable. The road was closed several weeks then and they had to bring fill in to stabilize the cliff. This pre-loading helped but did not solve the problem that we are now witnessing once again. This may become a fairly time consuming job to stabilize a cliff that has a fault within it. Pre-loading will probably not work this time and they will have to blast and remove the unstable portion of the cliff. Prepare for a long road closure!

The "crack" is over 3 meters wide and over 5 meters deep. That is not a crack- it`s a chasm. A normal drive to Kelowna from Summerland is roughly 40 minutes. Now it`s a 3 hour trip. There has also been 4 landslides south of Summerland in the last 2 months. Highway 97 is the only route through the Okanagan. One way in- one way out. As unstable as this area is now this will not be the last land/rockslide.

cut a set back of 60000 tons of rock to stabilize the slope . many rock mines blast and process that amount in a day to a week depending on the size of the operation. there are a number of contractors that could do this repair quickly and keep the detour graded and water trucks for dust control. my large excavator a sk 850 can load a 1000 tons of rock an hour into trucks. so those contractors in bc can handle this in no time as this needs no studies just remove the crown of rock that is slipping down onto the highway. this is easy work for the professional excavation/blasting contractors in bc.😕

Yeah this is insane. Problem: rock Solution: move rock. Trucks blast equipment. Also... now I don’t know what’s down there but I see a cliff beside that cliff going down and off the road. Why don’t you just help the boulder sized boulders go where they want to go?

Perhaps you missed the part of the video @:45 showing the huge crack running along the top of the slope about 20 feet back from the edge? They're going to have to remove that rock until they get to solid mountain before they can let the public back to drive on it.

I never understood the Coq. build when most of our Arch. are from Europe where they drill tunnels and chunnels all day long. The weather alone on the Coq. has me taking the Fraser. A route from Hope to Summerland made more sense to moi, and almost all the land is provincial forest or federal anyway: come out the back way of Summerland and then improve going north. Instead, even the cut to/from the Ok. is weather sensitive and isolated.
