Rockport, Indiana

Rockport, Indiana
FILMED IN HIGH DEFINITION
This is an EPIC segment that’s full of surprises! Rockport has not only a waterfront with a tall sandstone bluff, a historic cave, and rock wall observation deck, but a ton of Abraham Lincoln History. Abraham Lincoln spent 14 years of his youth in Spencer County, working and living among people that knew him well. You might be surprised to know that Florence Henderson, whom played Carol Brady, on “The Brady Bunch”, both grew up and attended school, right here in Rockport!
But that’s just the start. A man named George Honig, impressed by the humble story of Abraham Lincoln, dreamed-up an amazing time capsule, to honor the Hoosier that would be president. He created an entire village, comprised of homes and businesses, to tell the story of Abraham Lincoln’s childhood, telling about the building blocks of his character. A hollywood movie was filmed here, and the attached museum, with an actual cabinet made by Abraham Lincoln, is sure to provide an interesting visit that’s well worth your time.
The Lincoln Pioneer Village is open May 1st through October 31st of each year, and has wonderful re-enactors that bring the Abraham Lincoln story to life. They use actual handed-down stories, from Spencer County residents, that knew him and his family well: these are treasures that might not be in any history book you’ve ever read!
CREDITS
A very special thanks to Nancy Kaiser, of the Rockport Lincoln Pioneer Village and Museum, as well as all the volunteers, and re-enactors, that keep George Konigs vision, and Lincoln story, alive.

    I grew up in Chrisney Indiana which is 8 miles up the road from Rockport. My grandfather was born and raised in Buffaloville not far from Lincoln state park.He later moved to Lincoln city and lived about a quarter of a mile from Nancy's grave site. My 3 great grandfather moved to pigeon creek from Kentucky about the same time as the Lincoln family did. I really enjoyed this video it means a lot more to me than most. Wish the kids today would want to know more about this kind of history.

    Thank-you, Steve! When I was in grade school, it was the bicentennial of our country, and history was a huge topic. All those history lessons and field trips made an impact on me, and I carry it with me, today! Hopefully, some of these videos will spark curiosity in others, that will carry on a tradition of learning and exploring our exceptional history!

    Over 6 years ago, I vowed to document all of Southern Indiana. Rockport was a town that a friend told me about, I’d never even heard about it! To find that pioneer village and museum, as a Lincoln fan, was like finding a lost treasure. Really nice people at the museum, and a wonderful memory! 🙂

    According to our family history books James Lankford and his family are my great great great great great grandparents. My sister and I just went to the cave this past weekend. It was fascinating to see some of our ancestor’s homes especially the cave! According to the family history books he had 9 children, 7 girls and two boys. James Lankford was a farmer and a saw mill operator.

    Lots of brave people left their comfort zone to find a better way, on the dangerous and unpredictable frontier, and James was one of the first! I always love to hear about family history and memories, that come to mind, from a video I’ve created! When I was at the cave, I tried to visualize what it was like to be all alone, looking out at the Ohio River, no other buildings, people or sounds of civilization. You lived or died by your own efforts: it was up to you to create a life worth living, and no one else to blame! In modern times, with so many conveniences and competing noises, it’s difficult to get a true sense of what these brave pioneers had to endure and what kept them going. Just a wonderful piece of our Indiana history!

    Hey Kelly! I was earlier on the road, couldn't type much, but wanted to give you a good answer on things to do in Indiana, particularly Southern Indiana. The closest thing you have at Batesville is Metamora, and they took out the coolest thing in it: one of the last canal boat rides. It is hands down one of the most relaxing things to ever do, and I hope they get it back next year. But onto other things. When it comes to Indiana, people from other states have some blanket assumptions: it’s flat, has lots of corn, and outside of the Indy 500, there is nothing to do see or do here. Allow me to let you in, on a very well-kept secret. While southern Indiana certainly doesn’t have all the cool stuff Indiana has to offer, it has the most of it, condensed into the lower 25% of the state. The reason being: it was once where the Indiana State Capitol sat, until it was moved to Indianapolis. People in the know, come here to retire, as it offers amenities of the big city, within a short drive, and some of the most beautiful and interesting places you can imagine. It is completely different from the rest of Indiana, and nearly hidden if you don’t know where to look. If you live near Indianapolis, you have many fine museums, such as the Indiana State Museum, Eiteljorg Museum of Native American Art, the World War 1 Museum, Indianapolis Childrens Museum, Indianapolis Childrens Museum, Conner Prairie pioneer village, Metamora’s canal town and train. You even have the Indianapolis Zoo. And within an hour or so drive northeast, you have Mounds State Park, the Fort Wayne Childrens Zoo, Fort Wayne Science Central, and Sweetwater Headquarters, the largest musical instrument retailer in the United States. But then, it is pretty spread out. A further drive northeast will get you to the Cord Deusenburg Museum, and even further to Amish country. Go far West of Inday and you’ll find Turkey Run and Shades State Parks which are amazing, and Parke County, with over 30 covered bridges: the covered bridge capital of the world. But then you hit a roadblock. The interesting places are really spread out, and unless you were headed that way in the first place, you might not think they are worth the drive. Southern Indiana doesn’t do that to you. If I could summarize Southern Indiana in my own blanket statement, it would be: tallest waterfalls in the state at Clifty State Park, beautiful 1800’s Ohio River mansions, the disco bridge light show, Oldest Devonian era fossil bed in the world at Clarksville (plus museum), 4 of the coolest showcaves on earth, Indiana’s territorial capitol at Corydon, ancient native American rock shelters and Angel Mounds State Park, Spring Mill State Park village time capsule, Santa Claus’s famous post office and Holiday World, Abraham Lincolns Indiana homestead and museum, George Rogers Clarks amazing Vincennes Memorial, Gambling and pizza in the country at West Baden and French Lick, many many wonderful museums, and so many little towns that are time capsules to the 1800’s, especially Madison. On my KZread channel I have so far covered over 150 unique and interesting places, and there’s still plenty to go at that. There are rolling hills, deep valleys, charming hollows, and high up vistas of the Ohio River that will make your jaw drop. And all of this stuff: usually no more than hour from where you are. Southern Indiana is truly the best kept secret in travel destinations! And this doesn't even speak about the the friendly people and silly scavenger road trips we do, finding landmarks, ice cream places, weird grave stones and creepy places of legends.

    Thank you so much for your kind reply. My dad always claimed to be a history buff but he never really wanted to show me all these fantastic places. Getting him out and about was like pulling teeth. Unless there was a gun show exhibit. Then he would beg me to come along and see everything. It wasn't quite my cup of tea but I never wanted to hurt his feelings so I would go with him. Thank you for all the history. Btw do you know if the drive in movie is still going. 🤔 I think it was called the holiday drive in.

  • @AdventureswithRoger

    @AdventureswithRoger

    2 жыл бұрын

    Holiday Drive in is still there and in operation on 161! There’s actually quite a few drive in movie places, still going in southern Indiana. Last year, I started making a feature about the drive in ice cream places, but several closed for the season, before I could finish them all. I can’t tell you exactly how much ice cream and chili dogs I consumed to “judge them all fairly”. 🙂 My Dad was big into weekend day trips. Once he discovered show caves, he was hooked on them, and we did all of them in Indiana, went to Mammoth in Kentucky, and all the way out to Missouri for Meramec. After he passed away at only 46, we didn’t do much travel until I got a degree and could afford to take Mom places. Those were also great times I treasure! But today, wife and kids are not interested in anything but Florida, so I do almost all of these road trips alone. Sometimes a fellow photographer will go along, and that’s always a better day!

    Very nice presentation and details about President Lincoln. I live along Pigeon Creek and have many time imagined young Mr. Lincoln floating by on his way to the Ohio River crossing. Once as he passed by and waved he asked, Dave did you ever see the ship I designed and received a patent? No sir, I was not aware that you received a patent for a ship that you designed and built. Sure enough when I looked it up there it was, President Lincoln patent.

  • @AdventureswithRoger

    @AdventureswithRoger

    Жыл бұрын

    I believe Lincoln is still the only President to own a patent! Until a friend of mine told me about the village, I had no idea that it existed, and I sure didn’t know about him launching from here, to go down the Mississippi River. Rockport just really brought Abe Lincoln’s boyhood years alive to me, and learning about all his antics, through the village, made him less legend and more real.

    Civil War scholars seem to agree that the inauguration of Lincoln was a precipitating factor to the civil war, given his strong, anti-slavery views. Add that to the national debate about slavery, disagreement about states rights, and the south’s poor economy, and it blew up quickly. Lincoln may not have been the match, but he sure was the kindling.

    Icarus Airways You're wrong, President Lincoln DECLARED WAR in 1861 therefore he DID IGNITE the Civil War.. President Lincoln had strong views AGAINST SLAVERY and wanted to ABOLISH SLAVERY and HE DID.. Our American History as we've been taught for Centuries it is not incorrect..Some people are trying to cancel and ignore the TRUTH about American History to fit an agenda they want to teach future generation's..
