PART 3: “The Legend of Dr Foote” (Lawrence County, Indiana)

Part 3 and conclusion of the story of Dr Winthrop Foote, the Father of Lawrence County’s limestone industry. Eccentric and mysterious to many, this is the true story of a legendary man.
Part 3 covers Dr Foote’s life in Bedford, Indiana, and the things that drove him to both dark obsessions, and to create an industry that’s lasted nearly 200 years. The interior of his tomb, and legends around it, are also explored in this film.

I grew up in Bedford, and spent many a teenage hours hanging out in the woods at places like Footes Tomb and Stack Rock....it's absolutely amazing to stumble upon this trio of videos 20+ years later and learn the backstory of the man I blindly spent so much time with in my adolescent years. What an incredible journey! Phenomenal stuff! Thank you for that in depth voyage! 🙏

My pleasure, Malcolm! Dr Foote was a very complex man with a deep emotional makeup. When I first saw his unique tomb, I knew there had to be a bigger story. But I had no idea where researching his life would take me! I ended up running into a man that had studied Dr Foote’s life for decades (Author Brian Turpen). He not only showed me Dr Footes personality, and wonderful pictures he’d gathered, but gave me a real dilemma. It was not the full hero story I thought it would be. It instead showed me that everyone has frailty, makes mistakes, and perhaps, that’s what makes us human. Making the three films was very very eye opening! Thank-you for watching the series and telling me how it brought back memories! It only confirms that this was a story worth telling!

@@CuriousEarthMan I’m related, down the line, to one of the Brian Turpen’s, that’s a deputy sheriff and author. We spoke quite a bit during the Dr Foote production, but we’ve never met! True story. He provided old pictures for the movie, including a great shot of blue hole. At the time, it was winter when I was making the series, and I couldn’t have gotten a good shot of blue hole until spring, so used his photo of it. It’s also on private property, and he’d already gotten permission to walk the land, whereas I hadn’t.

Seems theres multiple families who own limestone quarries and had their heartstrings pulled by this video.🥰🥰🥰 My family has a Greencastle quarry. Its where the family farm has resided for decades. 🥰 - But WOW, on Dr Foote, Just.. wow 🤯 It's quite amazing how you might have a preconceived notion of your city or state being boring or not having a very exciting back story, because if you aren't told... how would you know? I have lived here my ENTIRE LIFE and never knew ANY of the things I have now learned from you. I literally have learned more about my states history in the past weeks and months from you than from school and The State itself. Just an opinion, but I think people like this should ABSOLUTELY be taught about and talked about in schools here. The man responsible for the reason the very ground under your feet lies where it does...or for you standing on it, he should absolutely be acknowledged. And sadly, just an hour or more before now, I had never even heard of him. Im glad I finally was able to be introduced and able to acknowledge him. Thanks for helping me do so. Im going to go pay him a vist. Maybe bring him some flowers. And pass on this inspiring true story so others can learn about him. I figured, its literally the least I could do. 🥰🙏🏻 WELL DONE. Truly. Im absolutely a subscriber and anxiously await every new and wonderful video from you. Thank you for all of this. You are appreciated 💛

Please do reach out to the schools because stuff like this makes learning fun and I feel Dr. Foote's Gypsy soul would be proud of your telling of his life! San Rom...

A sad & tragic story indeed. He had a whole life of love & misery built around his life. It tis a tragic life when one buries a child. And so many turn to alcohol to numb the pain. Seen it up close with my own parents when they lost their 2nd child in a car crash. I always wonder what life would of been like had it never happened. But it is, what it is. You can't turn back time, only learn & move forward. Hopefully leaving the hurt & pain behind for a brighter future. Thanks enjoyed this story.

Amazing conclusion to an outstanding series of videos Roger! I really appreciate your efforts to bring a quality biography to fruition. The only depressing part to me is the fall from grace suffered by Dr. Foote after his life became seemingly unbearable to him. Being human, we can climb to great heights or sink incredibly low in a matter of a short time.

Thank-you kindly! His moral fall gave me a serious challenge in both writing a screenplay and finishing a documentary. I was trying to tell a hero story and wasn’t sure what I should do with it. The experts told me, “history is history, tell the story.” No one is perfect, and the people we think “have it all together”, are often just great actors. But, it proves the idea that less than perfect people can accomplish great things. Dr Foote had a lot of dark ideas floating in his head, that drove him to action: a fear of poverty, immense guilt, despair, and a hero complex that continually had him trying to save a brother that was long gone. What I learned is that a person can’t solve God sized problems, and when anyone tries, it’s a recipe for madness!

My pleasure! This was the most difficult project I’ve ever tackled, as Dr Foote was a very complex man. Historical figure, founding father of Bedford, founder of the Lawrence County limestone industry, miracle worker, local hero. On the flip side: raging alcoholic and adulterer, at odds with his own family, at the end of his life. I sat on part 3 a long time, wondering how to deal with his mortal mistakes. The county historian said, “just tell the truth, people will get it.” And they have. Not one person has been upset by the portrayal of Dr Foote. Thank you for both watching the series, and providing encouragement. It truly means a lot! 🙂

Thank-you, Anita. I love to tell a good story, but struggled with this one, delaying part three for a long time. It started off as a hero story, those are easy to do. But when I found how he spent the last months of his life, I was very troubled. I didn’t want to make an entire town upset, and I was truthfully a little dejected, as I had grown to really admire him. So I spoke with the county historian and she said, “Just tell the truth. People will get it.” Surprisingly, not a single person had issue with the story. Not to be corny, but creating part three helped me grow as a person. None of us are perfect, even if we spend our entire lives trying. I forgive Dr Foote for not staying on a pedestal, and learning from that: maybe I can forgive myself when I fail despite my best efforts. 🙂

Thank you for your kind words! I really struggled with part 3. I wanted to tell a hero story, one about a legend. I didn’t know if local people would be angry about the characterization, but I was working with all the facts I knew. I finally spoke with my Bedford historians, and asked what they thought. They told me to tell the truth and it would be fine: no one is perfect, he was a human that failed in his morality. I was pleasantly surprised by the positive feedback. I’m not sure I would’ve received the same response 50 years ago. People today hardly remember him. I was also happy that kids, that had grown up around the tomb, learned something from the series. They were also very gracious.

We now understand that substance abuse and alcohol addiction is rightly considered as a devastating disease needing intervention and medical treatment. Mental impairment, personality changes, and physical breakdown are well known and recognized symptoms of this affliction. Often, clinical depression is the cause for addiction and the need for constant driven activities. President Theodore Roosevelt candidly admitted that he suffered from depression, and the need for constant activity was used to ameliorate the condition. Both men, accomplished great deeds in spite of their medical conditions, and that are now scientifically understood, but not in the times in which they lived. How much they suffered in silence we will never know. The life and final years of Dr. Foote should be seen in this light.

I struggled with making this film, originally writing the screenplay as a hero story: those are easy to tell. I didn’t want to smear a local heroes reputation, but he didn’t go out in a blaze of glory, on top of his game, or with a room of bereaved, loving family members or admirers. I spoke to the county historian, and she said, “Just tell the truth, people will get it.” And they have. Heroes can have flaws. And sometimes, heroes are nothing more but flawed people that rose above their circumstance, burying their pain and suffering, and accomplishing great things. It really made me sit back and think.

The author I worked with has met some Foote relatives, they still have Dr Foote’s medical degree, that’s shown in the video. They don’t live in Bedford though.

Per my KZread creator agreement, I agree that my videos are not for children. Otherwise, it’s a long checklist of limitations that would make it difficult or impossible to create the kind of videos I do. But, I’ve had many homeschool people say they’ve used my historical videos to teach their kids about local history. It’s important stuff, and I learn with every segment.

I don’t understand how he ultimately won the last appeal before the Indiana Supreme Court and before the gentleman's death, only to lose to his estate. I thought the Supreme Court had the last say... That doesn’t make sense. He should have been treated as an invoice, a bill, to be paid out by the estate, like they would have paid any other outstanding debt. Oh well... they could make a movie about this man’s life. And by the way - most excellent video!

It was a bizarre tale, and a situation of suing for entertainment sake. Dr Foote loved the practice of law so much, that he even wrote poetry about it! I couldn’t prove it, but I conjecture that the last legal proceeding, filed before the man’s death, was lost on purpose, as a homage to the dead. A few hundred dollars was a lot more money than it is today, but Dr Foote was rich and didn’t need it. That money would mean a lot more to Joseph Glovers family.

The obit written about him said he died in his 89th year...but the video said he died 6 months after marrying his second wife at age 68. Just wondering which is correct. I absolutely love your videos...they are outstanding!

I saw that too! Winthrop was 68, based on his tombstone, Find-A-Grave listing, and local historians. It’s hard to believe he accomplished so much in 68 years!

Through all of that loss, while people were gaining from his efforts, I bet not one person genuinely cared, asked him how he was, and if he was okay. There's a reason men go down that road. Because no one cares about the mental health of men.

I love that you are digging into history that most of us Hoosiers haven't know even though it's right under our feet! Please, though, don't use the music! It makes it so hard to hear you. Adds nothing.

You know I’m going to use music: it’s a movie. Most people won’t sit through 30 and 45 minute presentations without drama. Music is one of those things where you can’t please everyone, we all have different tastes. You might be one of those people who hate music in general. But what I can do is be careful about levels. What I hear through my speakers is different through yours, I have no idea what your brand and settings are.

I like history I especially like local history I'm an hour away from Indiana northwest Ohio close to the Battle of fallen timbers anyhow upon watching your story at the end of this episode you showed his casket I sit at my desk with the salesman sample of this casket or it may be a paperweight 5 in Long you can hold it in the palm of your hand anyhow if you didn't have any information on that casket this is signed on the back. "Model of original ever seal" Made in 1853 By Crane&Breed. // My typing skills don't do the signature Justice. I found it at a flea market and a box lot that I paid a dollar for the same day I was showing a friend and she offered me $80 for it I knew it was valuable then. I have looked it up online and the information I got that it is lead lined so you can take that signature and look it up and get all the information but it's quite interesting piece and reason I got back with you on it is because of the coincidence so that being on my desk for the last over 10 years now right in front of me everyday I look at it and then I watch your great video and there it is thank you for your time.

Brian Turpen, a cousin I’ve never met, has travelled extensively to write a book about Dr Foote, over a span of two decades. He found the full sized coffin on some website, would love to see a picture of your sample. If you could send me a picture, it would be an honor to send him a copy. He would be thrilled! Everyone fails at some point, because we’re all human. Control is an illusion. We set ourselves up for disappointments because we try to be God, and fail to accept our human limitations. Lots of unexpected wisdom from a story about a country doctor. 🙂
