    Most times, the hole is so deep and dark that you never really see what is there until it is dug out. I agree that this one was nice because it was in the open with lots of green everywhere I looked.

    That 16 minutes flew by right fast. Love the Apatite, truly beautiful specimens, but once I saw that humongous hornblende, (and bit of K-spar) the suspense kicked in on what else you could find...Olivine? Spinel? Glad you found and shared that awesome pocket.

    There are many other minerals in this area. Not always in quantity or perfect form, but they are there to be found.

  • @thirstfast1025

    @thirstfast1025

    6 жыл бұрын

    To be fair, olivine and spinel occur in different environments. I believe these minerals precipitate out of much higher temperature melts (ie magmatic) than calcite-mobilized fluids (ie hydrothermal). But there are a list as long as your arm of minerals that do occur there!

  • @scottlund4562

    @scottlund4562

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thirst Fast, I know meMiner knows much more than I, and I reckon you do too, and the association of environments between Spinel and Olivine may be rare as you said, however, spinel has been found in Renfrew County, Ontario, and also in Quebec's Parker mine which is in Notre-Dame-du-Laus. The Parker mine has also produced large Olivine crystals, with the common mineral factor being Horneblende.

  • @thirstfast1025

    @thirstfast1025

    6 жыл бұрын

    Lol, I said the environments were different, not particularly rare. To clarify a little, I didn't mean that olivine occurs in a different environment than spinel, but that both occur in a different environment than apatite. Olivine is very abundant, as it forms as one of the first minerals to precipitate out of a basaltic magma (check out the Bowen reaction sequence). My personal favorite olivine is the type found in meteorites. Very large grain, very impressive color... As for spinel, it is igneous or metamorphic in origin, but it can be mobilized (as a solid crystal, not chemically) or exposed by calcite hydrothermals (so if it was mobilized, you can find them in the calcite matrix, if it was exposed, you will find it at the contact between the host rock and calcite). This mechanism is how the spinel mined in Ontario occurs, which means that somewhere in the local groups exists a formation of gabbro, a significant hornfel, or body of marble, as these are the common formation environments for spinel. Given you mention that olivine is also present, and that the 'common mineral factor' is hornblende, I would gamble that the parent material is a gabbro (again, the Bowen series is relevant here). Hope this is useful information! Cheers!

    Is it easy to find appetite in Ontario? I would love to take a trip this summer and find some areas where I could find appetite. I’m trying to look for areas where I can find calcite near me to see what else is there it seems where there’s calcite there are other things. Is it true that calcite will be melted always by muriatic acid? Is that how I know it’s calcite and not Quartz?

  • @meMiner

    @meMiner

    5 жыл бұрын

    Calcite. Quartz is not affected. Be aware that muriatic will also dissolve apatite. It won't affect titanite. So you have to know what is in the calcite that you want to keep and if it is affected by the acid. There are many places to collect apatite in Ontario. One centre of the right kind of host rocks is Bancroft and there are public collecting sites nearby. In fact, if you look up Bancroft Chamber of Commerce, you may find they have a organized collecting trip that you can join when you are here. Otherwise, probably one of the best public places for good quality large apatite is The Lost Mine near Eganville.

    They are found worldwide, but of course not everywhere. You have a couple of mines in south Illinois that I am aware. I looked up on mindat what is in the local area and fluorapetite is a gem found near me. When looking for exposed calcite that is eroded does it look waxy and smooth? And are you digging before the exposed calcite where it once was?

  • @meMiner

    @meMiner

    5 жыл бұрын

    Calcite vein is usually white to orange. It looks an awful lot like quartz, but is softer (can scratch calcite with a knife). When eroded, it it is usually dirty. I guess it can be waxy/smooth but that is easy to confuse with other minerals. Calcite can also be crystals. I am not sure that answer helped much. The best areas for me have a calcite cap and the loose crystals are in crevices or underneath the cap. You can usually find crevices because big tree roots also dig into them. Sometimes, you can find where the calcite as eroded because there is a depression in the ground or a line of trees growing in the vein dyke. If you have a steel rod, you will hit the sides just under the surface and the rod will push down thru the dirt at the opening. I should do a video on that. I like to dig where there is still some calcite so I get loose crystals around it plus have the chance of finding something whole that is still contained in the calcite. Calcite is quite difficult to break without destroying the crystals. It seems to flex under the chisel but the crystals don't flex.

Very fragile though, unfortunately, such a shame when nature reclaims them they just crumble away and the beauty is lost. meMiner Ok, I will have to wait until you have a change of appetite, lol The material I use doesn't need to be a 10 or even an 8 , obviously the softer it is the more delicate it will be but in the same respect a hard mineral is just as if not more delicate depending on how brittle it is. Providing the surface will finish and take a polish without flaking away or crumbling like its been exposed and weathered then it's all good. Laminated sections are cushioned to avoid crushing casualties when tightening the pommel as I don't put an overly amount of trust in glue
