Rockford fosgate punch power 800a2 amp dyno run old school amplifier test down to 1 ohm mono

Ғылым және технология

I uploaded this video to compare the Rockford Fosgate punch 800a2 to the power 800a2.
Basically these amps are the same only the filter slope is different: 24dB instead of 12dB at the punch 800a2.
There is a difference in continuous output power by a nice amount of watts but i think
it varies even between the standard punch series.
This power 800a2 has been sent to me by WATTSUPOAUDIO.com and is for sale. Just follow the link:
www.wattsuppaudio.com/car-aud...
Stay tuned for more amp dyno videos made by Audiokeller !
Dont forget: The other punch 800a2 is still here. it has to go for free, only for shipping costs, if 1000 people subscribed ill let u know how to get it!

    I had this running for years in my old car running at 1 ohm powering 3x jl w6-v1 6ohm subs. It sounded so amazing and the w6 has had no problem with the power.

    I still have my 800a2, and 800a4, both brand new in the box! I have had several, of both of these amps, from back in the day! One day I might, take these down, from storage

    It’s conservative power - there are still speakers around which produce high SPL with less power. Especially in todays car audio section there are woofers with high power handling , they feature big voicecoils, heavy cones and very big magnets with a nice cooling system to handle lots of power but in most cases the downside is low efficiency which makes lots of power / bigger amps necessary to reach high spl . I think it’s still amazing what some audio systems were able to do with less power input from small oldschool amps - way smaller than this 800a2 👍😃 music Styles were also a bit different

    Cant imagine that lightweight amp manufacturers measure with 8 cycles. nobody had the idea to do this back in the days. to compare yesterdays amps to the lightweight amps of today makes a redyno of yesterdays amps necessary 👍

    I don t understand that machine and how it measures the watts please explain how it works so we understand clearly all i understand is there is a sound wave on the screen

  • @audiokeller1975

    @audiokeller1975

    let me try to explain it with my words: the machine is called a scope which can make AC voltage visible. that scope is connected to the amps outputs. instead of a speaker there is a big power resistor connected to the amps output ( this is a harder load for the amp than a speaker ) i give a sinewave via RCA input with a headunit into the amp and drive the signal to the clipping point. That is the point where the amp is at its outputpower limits. i measure the voltage and divide it by the used resistor. lets say we have a 4 ohm load and we get 50 volts RMS unclipped out of the amp. power is calculated: voltage * voltage divided by impedance in ohms. that means in our example : 50*50 / 4 = 625 watts. RMS = peakvoltage / 1.414. with the scope i just monitor the voltage until it reaches the clipping point. With a big amounr if clip the RMS value goes up. this has to be avoided because a clipped signal is dirty and sounds bad and destroys speakers sometimes. i hope i was able to explain it. If not let me know and ask your questions👍

    Hello. I had the Punch 800a2 amp years ago, and it sounded awesome! The birth certificate said 982W total at 2 ohms, all channels combined. Is this Power 800a2 amp better, or more powerful, than the Punch 800a2? Is there any difference? Thanks, nice video!

  • @audiokeller1975

    @audiokeller1975

    The only difference of both amps is the slope of the input filters. 800a2 has 12db per octave and power has 24db per octave, that’s just a slight difference, but no difference in output power.

    @@audiokeller1975 Ok got it, thanks. Some other guy tested this same amp 2 yrs ago, and he only got 556W 8 ohms mono, and 811W 4 ohms mono! He ran the test again at 1khz, and got even lower numbers! How can this be? He ran the tests at 14 volts, and still got less power?? I was planning on buying one of these, but now I'm not so sure.

    There is a difference in continuous and dynamic 1kHz test. Dynamic Power is printed in the birth sheets. Can you be more specific and point me to this test? After all these years it’s also possible that some of the big caps are starting to die and don’t store the same amount of energy like 20 years ago. Nothing wrong with buying this kind of amplifier-they are 👍

    @@audiokeller1975The test was done by "HifiVega" here on youtube, 2 yrs ago. He doesn't specify, but I think it's continuos power. In both 40hz and 1khz tests, the power rating results are lower than yours! His best results are 556W mono 8 ohm, and 811W mono 4 ohm. Over 100W less, than your test results! He also says the Punch 225.2 amp, is almost as powerful as the Power 800a2, which I don't believe! Thanks.

  • @audiokeller1975

    I know this test and it was continuous. The dynamic headroom of these amps is amazing because we don’t listen to sinus signals which have a crest factor of 3db, Musik has much higher crest factors and that’s when the Rockfords sound so amazing because they deliver lots of dynamic headroom 👍 todays pro audio amp manufacturers don’t rate with continuous power in most cases. They simulate different crest factors with different Burst signals which leads to much higher values because continuous is the hardest way to test an amp especially on fixed resistors which are way harder load than speakers which have impedance which are frequency depending! Continuous shows how strong the amps power supply is and you can compare amps only if tested equal. An amp which has 100 watts continuous but no dynamic headroom will not sound better than an amp which has 80 watts but 3 db of dynamic headroom ( 160watts for a short time )! That’s the reason why they are sounding great 👍
