Rockford Fosgate DSM Series Amplifiers - Old School

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

See an overview of the mid-90's DSM series of amps from Rockford Fosgate. You'll see everything from the "baby" Punch 40 to the "Mack Daddy" Punch 200. The Punch Power DSM series were not mentioned, as I don't currently own any of those....
edit: See the Video response below. I recently picked up a 250m2 and 500m. The 250m2 is MINT with end caps while the 500m is a little beat up and missing the emblem. I've heard the 500m emblem is one of the most rare of the DSM emblems. If you happen to have an extra, please let me know!

I installed a 4080 in my pick-up some twenty years ago, it's still going strong after all these years. If I ever sell the vehicle this amp will be staying with me.

I can't get enough of your videos. I still have a 60x2 and 100x2 that has moved through several cars I've owned and been in daily use since the late 90's. They still get the job done and anyone who rides in my truck for the first time is always impressed with the sound. I'm sure I could buy something more powerful and more efficient to replace them with, but no since fixing what isn't broken (and not likely to ever break).

These are some of the best car amps rf built! I am running a whole system with a punch 40x2 and this sucker just hits! A pair of highs and one 12" sub all powered by one little amp. Sounds so clean and loud. I can imagine what a 60 or 100 would do!!

still running a 4080 in my 88 vw scirocco, running rockford 5 inch fanatic combo and a boxed 12inch punch sub. 25 years on and it still sounds incredible, the 'built in the USA'' quality is amazing, these amps fetch more than rockfords' current offerings !

@normalicy Yes, I've let a few good deals go myself...I do want a Power 50x2 though...let me know if you have an "extra". I have 4 DSM links, but only 2 are true links, the other two were made from a DSM amp and don't fit quite right. In the video, I only took one out of the box, the other one is NIB and still very minty

Still great equipment. I still run a 60x2 and 100x2 combo. I bought them used/pampered in 1998 and installed them one car. Ran for 4 years, then pulled them and traded vehicles, reinstalled them 6 months later and have been running them since 2003 trouble-free in my current truck.

Now those are the Fosgate amps I remember. I wish Fosgate would do a retro throwback and call it something like classic or legacy! First system I ever seen was a old school Fosgate and 2 12w6 JLs. That system changed my life and set a high as hell standard of what a system should be.

Memory lane. I had Punch 60 back in the day and ran my whole car off of it, two 12" punch drivers, and 10 other drivers. Worked awesome. Later on I bought a 40 for the mids/highs and just put the 60 on the subs. Definitely cleaned up the bass when the amp didn't have to do all that other work. I'm sure everybody knows this, but DSM = Discrete Surface Mount. It was a new tech at the time. Basically just another step in miniaturization letting you cram more stuff on a circuit board.

I should have mentioned in the video the 2 DSM links that were made were actually given to me by another RF amp fan. He took the time to cut down an amp in attempt to make "links". They are difficult to use, b/c you don't have an easy way to connect them to your DSM amps, they just "butt up" next to them. The factory RF DSM links work much better, but the attempt to make them was a great effort!

  • @wal
    @wal12 жыл бұрын

@birdmanG6843 Thanks man, the DSM's are optimized for 2 ohms stereo or 4 ohms mono, but I wouldn't doubt it if your sub was a Dual 4 and you had the amp bridged at 2 ohms. This would explain why it got so hot as the amp was seeing a 1 ohm load. The DSM's can handle it, just make sure you've got good air flow on the amp. I used my 400x4's rear channels bridged at 2 ohms for years with no issues at all

As you said, Ken C. Pohlmann, the reviewer at CSR, rated these amps as simply the best. This guy was super -picky, a HUGE audio snob, he's a hot shot scientist. He tested all equipment on his own Porsche. His endorsement pretty much convinced me to invest in Punch amps at the time. I wasn't disappointed.

It ran very stable bridged with 2x12" 4 ohm kicker comps and 2x12" dual 4 ohm L5s wired in series maxing out at 94 spl in a 99 Durango while all 4 windows and both front doors open. Subs are rear facing and reading was taken at center console at front of vehicle.

@bigdwiz AS&S (or was it CSR?) did a test on the 200DSM way back when it was released showing the 600w range & I've seen others confirm it. The 40 was just a gut feeling and I was talking 2 ohms mono. Of course they're not rated at 2 ohms mono, but I ran one for years like that. Nice to see you've upgraded the resistor bank. I ended up stripping an old amp heatsink & slapping a bunch to it for a rather humble 800w bank. Looking back, I wish I bought twice as many for the 2/4 ohm option.

@normalicy I tested the 200DSM earlier and got 600w in peaks (not continuous RMS) in my 2ohm mono tests. I also used almost all of my Rockford amps at 2ohms mono, after having the ability to test them, I'm starting to see they don't put out too much more in 2ohms mono than 4ohms mono, just quite a bit more heat (well in the case of the 200DSM, I guess 100w is nothing to sneeze at). But, if you are using dual 4ohm subs (or a single DVC 4 sub), then you don't have much choice...

I did some listening tests using some nice home speakers and a good source (uncompressed audio and a good DAC) and I compared the Orion HCCA series amps to the Fosgate Punch DSM series. I was fully expecting the Punch to sound worse but they were just as good if not a hint better than the HCCA amps (which are my favorite amps) for SQ. I was shocked actually. The punch amp I used was the 4080DSM. The orions I tested were the 225 and 250HCCA Digital reference series. I have new respect for DSM!

@normalicy I've tested some of the DSM amps and you're not too far off. For RMS power, the 40 was around 225 bridged, with max power over 300w. I didn't have enough resistors to test the 200's output bridged before (my setup was 400w, new setup is 1500w+), so I'm excited to test it. I do recall the 100DSM is more powerful than the 150HD

This is the test Rockford used for all of their early DSM ads, b/c the tester said he would choose this amp if his life depended on it (or something like that). I have the article scanned if anyone wants it, just send me a msg w/ your email address. I had an 800w setup, but it was either 2ohms or 8ohms. They did better than 5-20% over spec. But some did better than others. In terms of being underrated, the small amps (ie Punch 40, Punch 60) did best, producing about 250% of rated output at 4Ω. The Punch 200 was less underrated, only producing about 150% of rated output at 4Ω. But this is still much better than only 5-20% over rated power.

I didn't make it very far in the video, on the Punch 40's. The whole series, there was an amp, Punch 40 before RF labeled them DSM. (Discrete Surface Mount) They came out with DSM as a model number scheme, every 2 years so you couldn't jump warranty dating, due to number scheme. So it was Punch 40> 40 DSM> Punch 40 DSMi> then Punch 40 DSM ix, with active x-over.

He does an amp dyno for the Punch 60. I believe that the certified numbers are something like 80W per channel into 4Ω stereo and 120W per channel into 2Ω stereo (double for bridged 8Ω and 4Ω, respectively).

LOL, you have a collection like mine. A bit smaller, but very similar. We were probably bidding against each other a number of times. One of these days I'm gonna find some space so I can lay out my collection. Oh & I'm completely confident you should get 600+ watts out of the 200's. The 40's get near to 300w.

@bigdwiz I've only got one Power 50x2. Wasn't planning on selling it & only have the 50x2 end cap unless I steal an endcap from another one of my power series amps. It's decent condition though. If you're serious, let me know. Yeah, I've contemplated making a couple links out of some of the dead DSM's I have. Never got around to it.

They put 600 watts on the Amp because these were sold at Best Buy and they needed to keep up with the other mfg’s who were “fudging” the numbers (by using MAX numbers). Amp is rated 50x2 or 200x1 RMS

@bigdwiz I've backed off a lot on the amps lately. I literally have hundreds now. In fact, there have been a number of great deals lately that I let pass because I felt that someone else deserved a chance. It's funny though, I have 3 links & one box like you.

@bigdwiz Man u have all that old school RAW power. Companies just don't make amps like they used to. I had a punch 40 on two kicker competition 15's back in 1997 and that little amp pushed those speakers like they had 1000 watts going to them. That old school power was true wattage and the amps were totally underrated. They pushed way more power then they printed on the box. I wish I could get my hands on alot of different old school amps. If u wanna sell any send me a message. Serious buyer...
