I knew Mr John had serious problems grappling with his sexuality and fame and various substances etc but was not aware these were minor compared to the issues with his folks. Though the film dealt with this very well. The fantasy sequences were really well done, and the impersonation was top notch.

This film should not work. It’s basically R rated Mamma Mia but serious crossed with a little Billy Elliot and a big dose of addiction drama. Yet it’s the most purely enjoyable thing I’ve seen at the cinema this year (despite the alcohol and cocaine. The acting is fantastic, the serious stuff is treated with respect and the musical sequences have terrific energy without having the forced bombast of The Greatest Showmen and it’s ilk (although I can see the outright fantasy sequence alienating some people.) I loved it.

I saw it last night. I was very impressed. It’s largely a film about mental health and it manages to do this in quite a profound way. Beautifully surreal in just the right way. I can see this film dividing people though. I think you have to be able to ‘read’ the film in the right way to enjoy it. It’s more a journey of feeling and thought rather than a traditional linear cinematic narrative. If you’re looking for a straight forward biopic, you may be disappointed (and slightly confused).
