I had a LX470 for 10 years travelling around Australia towing a small van with no dramas, bought a Sahara 200series for a few years but we both missed the finish and extra inclusions that the Lexus had, plus over the DPF issues of the Sahara. Bought a LX570 with extractors a and a UNi chip bigger wheels, goes everywhere with greater comfort , Lexus every time

HI Rod, enjoyed your thoughts. We have a Series 5 TI Y62 Patrol and tow a 22.6 ft caravan about 3.3t loaded. Reasons for the Patrol? , like the V8 , no turbo"s, no DPF, not as much worrying about fuel quality(replacement injector cost potential) in out of the way places and pretty robust driveline. Economy is on a par towing with a 200 series generally, maybe uses a little more fuel when just around town etc. But the main reason was when we brought the Patrol at the end of 2019 I could have brought two for the price of a 200 series Sahara, in fact wish I had. I am not especially Toyota or Nissan having had plenty of each over the years but the Patrol has done everything as a 4x4 that we have asked of it and has been 100% reliable. My last point is a V6 Petrol or V6 diesel is not going to have a great soundtrack by comparison, I am coming up for 60 and still like to hear the V8 bellowing long after the diesel has run out of puff. I guess I am old school but that is my opinion. Sorry my wifes name comes up. Oh the 300 over the Lexus as it is more Bush track ready and does not have the fancy panels/steps etc.

I have a 2018 RG Colorado Z71 and tow a 21’6” Essential Grant Cruiser, reason i bought it was looks, price, and towing ability. It’s had a remap and 3” exhaust. Accessories are SMM steel canopy, 147L fuel tank, Xrox rock sliders, Opposite Lock 2 post bullbar and rear bar/ towbar, 14000 lb winch, 3 batteries, and rear drawer. Iv’e done 108 k km with out any issues . Between the 300 and the Lexus, id get the Lexus for sure, not at all keen on the look of the 300 nor the Landcruiser tax.

I've chosen the 200 series gxl. Bought one of the last ones last year. I tow a 1.7t camper trailer (used to have a GU Patrol with the td42 auto) and the 200 does it so much more comfortably. I'll probably baby the 200 going to the Cape compared to when I went in the Patrol in 2019, but there's no extra points for destroying a $100k+ vehicle to show off. It's now double locked and has the extras to make things easy and safe. The Patrol had a Wholesale Autos Nomad valve body and Compushift (it was a ZD30-td4.2 conversion) which works but nowhere near as nice to drive as the Landcruiser.

We just did some test driving of these size vehicles we ended up settling with the y62 ti-l 105000 with a few extras (floor mats, dash mat, electric brakes, tow bar, tinted windows Uv tint, weather shields bonnet protector) just the value for money, service intervals from petrol over diesel and what you save from a 300 vx same extras as we went for on the til it was $119000 for vx you can put that money into mods on the y62. The y62 are starting to get very popular as well more and more on the road and alot off aftermarket accessories that are readily available now. The other mods will be same as what we would do if we went to the 300 lift. Lights, Bar, snorkel, sliders, lock up kit, exhaust decent tyres tune. Save some more money as well as won’t need catch can or a extra diesel pre filter or a throttle controller on the petrol v8 which we would put on the 300 also if the air box is not revised it would also be a safety cost changing it if like the previous 200 dusting issues that can occur. The y62 could handle a Apple car play update or mod but it’s not something that’s needed bluetooth is enough for what we do. Warranty is finally the same now Toyota caught up 5 year unlimited kms so it wasn’t a factor. Parts and accessories well Nissan is a bit out dated so parts and aftermarket accessories are more available if doing a big lap. But still both are new so should not be a factor. only the accessories where a factor to us for our purchase can get them bolt them on and go bush not waiting on stainless snorkels to be made or Bullbars etc like for the 300 this all takes time with new models and adr compliance etc. If I was looking at these I would go the Lexus just seems a better nicer vehicle as a whole and the new turbo version should be a beast. It’s hard as money personal preferences, opinions and what we do with our vehicles are totally different from person to person company to company. So it’s a test drive look at the features look at what we need for accessories and decide individually from there. Really appreciate the videos keep up the great work thanks Rocket.

Rod, I had a Pajero NT 3.2 lt Diesel for 12 years. I towed a few different off-road campers up to 2400ks over that time. I also had you fit (via Roo Systems) a manual lock-up converter and temp gauge to the auto box. What a revelation that was when towing. I loved it. However, recently I have turned over to the dark side and I have taken delivery of my new 300 series GR sport. I've only done a few hundred ks so far, however, I'm very impressed. I would be very interested in the outcome of your research re: your 300 VX. I'll keep checking your posts.

I'm not in this market, not having a family, and not needing to tow, I currently have a GGN25R Hilux. I would however take the Lexus every time. I have always preferred petrol to diesel, and there's nothing stopping you from throwing on some paint protection film (or panels), and some LandCruiser wheels to make the Lexus just as capable off road. It was different when the Lexus was a significant cost premium over the top Cruiser, but if you're spending similar coin, the Cruiser just doesn't stack up. Not to mention the fact that Lexus does some of the best seats period, which is a huge factor in a long distance touring vehicle.

If it was a choice between the 2 I’d take the Lexus any day of the week, however the latest Lexus seems to be the best of both worlds. You get the option of the twin turbo petrol, which on paper will outperform the 570 in both performance and economy, and it arguably is better looking than the LX570, and miles ahead aesthetically than any 300. Rear end looks awesome, but no split door like the 300 is a letdown. Good video mate, I have subscribed and are eagerly awaiting a review from you on the new Lexus.

As a Lexus GX owner, I agree with your outlook. Different vehicles for different purposes, the LC is a utilitarian and offroad model, the LX does everything else way, WAY, better. If I had to tow a huge trailer, I wouldn't bother with an SUV, 3/4 or 1 ton truck with a diesel. Hauling a trailer with one of those is effortless and you don't really have to worry about trailer weight, from a Canadian perspective.

Just sold my old 100 series GXL turbo diesel, looked at the 300 series, but decided it was not for me. I ended up buying a new Chev Silverado premium with tech pack. Only had it a short while but still so impressed, recently did a 300 km round trip on open highway and averaged 10.2 lph /km which is better than the 100 series, and that is the 6.2 litre V8 petrol. Out of the 2 vehicles you have there I would definitely choose the Lexus.

200" Bonnet had a reason for the "Bulges" for the intercooler, But they've made them bigger on the 300 and it has no function, Just look silly, and the bonnet is near horizontal, combined with the vertical back it looks like a car a 3Yo would draw from the side profile. I can live with the new v6, but the body shape and one piece rear door is why I'm keeping the 200. The lexus should have it all If they keep the 2 pc back door, and maybe just a little less grill. Thanks Mr & Mrs Rocket, great video.

Not that Im in the market (both are way way out of My league) there is a fair bit of hype aound the 300. The lexus sure does look pretty and if you were to keep both relatively stock I think I would go with you Rod and choose the lexus. However I see more and more you tube clips of people modifying the 300, tyres, bars, suspension hell some have even chopped it already. Too that end if I was choosing to do the big lap Id go the 300 but if it was more a torak tourer the looks of the lexus would win. I also think both are great cars. Awesome vid Rocket Robb

love your work Rocket, driven plenty of toyota's always seem so mundane (gutless) and crappy build quality. Never been one to spend my hard earned modifying vehicles either, if I want a better car I'll just buy it. I have a 2004 VW touareg which has towed campers and caravans over all sorts of tracks, 31" all terrains on 18" rims it's got low range, locking centre and rear diffs, full size spare and air suspension (no WDBars required ). It surprises everybody with its capability. And so comfortable and easy to drive. towing the 2.7T van it gets between16.5 to 18 L/100km, the Euro's know how to make diesels for sure. Shame the newer models don't have the full size spare option, but after market carriers are available.

I tow 22.6 van with a 2017 BT50 (fitted out with one of your brilliant Tranny filter kits) and find it extremely good in all aspects of towing and ride comfort both with van on or van off. Meticulous care taken service wise, and it has GVM upgrade and full ARB build front to back, we want for nothing more. 30k “overpriced” is irrelevant when you sell/upgrade if it retains its value, BT-50 is a good truck but you will lose plenty of the purchase price when selling, doesn’t come close to a Cruiser or LX for towing/comfort either.

Call it Toyota tax or just stubbornness and denial from Toyota owners that they are overpriced for what they are. Yes they are more popular than other brands but that does not justify the price, at least 30 K more that a Patrol or 40-45 K more than Pajero. Here in the states the new 300 Series LX600 has gone up significantly over the outgoing 200 Series LX570. It's hard to compare that price shift with the 300 Series Land Cruiser as we aren't receiving that model (absolutely insane IMHO). We had a 2019 LX570 alongside of 2021 Land Cruiser and we ultimately kept the Land Cruiser, the main reason being that we preferred the more subdued styling of the Land Cruiser but also because we knew that we wouldn't be able to get another Land Cruiser going forward. We miss the added luxury of the LX and it's quieter ride, but the loud styling of the front end was just too much for us. We might consider the LX600 in addition to the Land Cruiser in the coming years but they will see very different uses with the Land Cruiser being used for weekend camping and off-road excursions while the LX will be used more for over the road travel, daily driver, out on the town. I am sad to see the split gate go away with the 300 and the smaller interior dimensions is a bummer as well. Now if we could only get them in a diesel like the rest of world, that would be the tops.

RE your question: the 300 or the Lexus. The Lexus every day of the week because of the petrol option. I have had several diesel vehicles and the repair costs with anything to do with the fuel systems are sky-high. Also, the PDF is not all plain sailing as claimed by the manufacturers, although some do it better than others - Toyota is not one of the better ones. Petrol engines are well advanced nowadays and with regular servicing is a more reliable and better choice. I travel about 8 to 15k each winter on very ordinary roads. Mike in Queensland.

Fair comments you made with options the Lexis stacks up, I have a 200 series low ks tows well well sorted later model the only real advantage of a 300 series is the 10 speed auto . I drove 300 I didn't think performance wasn't a massive difference to the 200 plus with all new models remember the problems with the 2007/8 200 series am going to let the factory do the R/D wouldn't consider a 300 till they have been on the road for a couple of years. The turbos located on top of the v6 it's going to get very hot in this location especially with engine slogging hard in hot weather.

Here in the States (los angeles), i have both. Hands down the Lx570 is a better, much more comfortable vehicle. The air suspension works well, but it is the dividing factor between the land cruiser and the lexus. If you want anything bigger than a 33" tire, then you have to go land cruiser to be able to lift it to fit. Still tho, the Lexus is a phenomenal vehicle and rides amazing. The 5.7 is a legendary animal. Same thing with with prices here, the landcruiser is about 30K more than the lexus, because people will pay for it.

Colorado z71 with all your coolers and deep dish oil pan, tune. towing 3ton. Perfect now. No dramas for 2years. Zero. Thankyou. The 300 looks like a oversized RAV4. Lexus IS ok. But my pick same money is SQ7 V8 diesel all day. Shits on them both at the same time.

There both mall crawlers. Wouldn't want either. We test drove one of the first 300s in the country and I 100% agree the console n door are way too tight if your a medium to larger guy. Loved the engine! The rest of the car was too soft roamer for me Rod.

I prefer the Lexus, just for the added comforts and luxury and in Japan we can buy the new LX with diff lockers.. I know the US market doesn't have said option, because import prices, but not sure Australian market does.. My brother has one, and it is a total go anywhere weapon, even on road tires!

I am not in a position to buy a new car by a long way but I drive a 2000 base model Range Rover which adjusted for inflation would have cost $130kish, whenever I have towed something it's done it without complaint, 3.5T towing capacity and the nicest ride of any car I've been lucky enough to drive. If I was somehow in the market I'd go the more common one because in the instance of needing to replace a panel it'll be easier to get one.

In 2020 we looked at the Lexus but just couldn’t live with the front end so we went with the Sahara. Looking back we got a great deal at $119,600 drive away. We had to wait 5 months for it to arrive from Japan as we wanted the Pearl white and cream leather interior and just after we picked it up the prices started to go stupid. It’s definitely a beautiful car but there are things I’m disappointed with such as leg room. I’m 6’6” or 2 meters tall and there isn’t enough leg room, its ok but I’d be more comfortable if the seat went back another 50 mm. I had a lot more leg room in the Territory we had before the Cruiser. Compared to the Territory, front storage is pretty hopeless as well. The only way to get the Toyota suite of safety features was to buy the Sahara but it comes with so much stuff we’ll never use. The third row seats came out as soon as we got home and they’ll sit in the cupboard until we sell the car. The rear DVD player will never be used but there is no option to buy a five seater Sahara. The sat nav is the shittest system in the whole world bar none. $120,000 and I had to buy a $10 phone holder so I can use Google maps. So many things “ding” at you especially the door. Open the door with the ignition on and the bloody thing starts dinging. I know the fucking door is open because I opened it. Seriously, how many people have been driving their car down the road and suddenly fell out because they didn’t know the door was open. I wish I had got the plain white as the Pearl is almost impossible to touch up and I think the plain white looks cleaner and brighter. With these annoyances out of the way there are so many things I love about the Cruiser, the power if you want it and totally reasonable fuel consumption if your not a lead foot. It’s tows our 18’ van easily. Its very comfortable and quiet on the highway and I’m still amazed at just how much you can fit in the back. And here’s something I never thought I’d say but the dealership we bought the car from, Toyota Fyshwick, Canberra were outstanding with there price and service and are great when we get it serviced. I’m one of those people that “mark” certain parts before a service and they’ve never let me down. The Cruiser is our daily driver and does everything we need it to. It’s now over $300 to fill from empty but because it has such a big tank we don’t have to fill it very often. We travel to Melbourne several times a year and it’s nice to be able to drive there and back without having to fill up. I can’t see us changing the Cruiser any time soon. Cheers Stuart.

Just bought a ZX Sahara because to get similar kit on the Lexus its another $34K. I previously owned a Lexus, but it’s no longer a good value proposition. Rod, you’re going to be disappointed when you visit the Lexus dealer. Prices are much higher and the V6 petrol model is only available on the “Ultra Luxury” model, yours for $211K PLUS on roads.

Yes they are big on pricing in the first 6-12 months but I'm interested to see how they go after the first few months with pricing. Time will tell if they can sell a $230,000 V6. I'm not so sure at this time. I think they will sell the diesel options but not the V6.

Both are very good cars, but wouldn't buy either. For me and this would be for lot of people, the price of this cars is just way over the top. Now I know I will get a lot of flack for this, but I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 diesel. It's getting a little old now a 2010 model, but boy it tows my heavy camper trailer fully loaded car loaded as well and tows it perfectly. On a good flat road with no wind I get around 14 to 14l/100 and the worst is 18/100. Now if i had the money it would the Jeep GC Trailhawk V6 diesel, even better for towing, better fuel economy, very good drivers car, fantastic off road and for around $85k and I would have nearly enough money over to buy a new caravan.
