Rocket League 201 - Positioning

Ойындар

Welcome to Rocket League Uni, the syllabus for today will be based on Positioning following the STAR concept. We will focus on concepts and strategy rather than mechanics. If you have any questions please comment and I will try to get to them as soon as I can.

    I still have replays from that entire series! It was one of our last Gfinity tournaments leading up to RLCS 1 qualifiers. We were tied 4-4 in OT of the last game of the series and alot scored a great "deevo" to eliminate us. Broke our hearts. I've also had other pro "cameos" in my videos. I was fortunate to play with and against so many pro players back in 2015-2016. I don't see them as often these days. D:

    +Cethis V. I agree, It would be ideal for lower levels to play this way, but it's could be overwhelming to learn mechanics and strategy. I estimate Challenger Elite is around when mechanics start to become consistent and the strategy of play is what begins holding players back.

    Just started playing about 3-4 weeks ago (currently lvl 24) and seriously, almost everyone I'm paired with at a standard 3v3 game should watch this. Most of the times my teammates go after the ball like mindless zombies and they don't seem to care if I'm at a better position for passing or shooting, they just jump and hit the ball. Lately this has been driving me nuts, because I'm always trying to play like it is explained in the video, but if my team doesn't cooperate then my efforts are helpless, sometimes even counterproductive.

    I want to spam this video to every person I play solo 3s with. I was making all the saves and clears the whole match and in the last 10 seconds on of my team mates goes up for the same block as me, knocks me out of the way, and lets the goal in. We then lost in overtime. I just hang back on the goal line pretty much the whole game as I can't make offensive plays when someone on my team in shadowing me and challenging every ball I go for.

    First off, that is some great tips thank you! But i have a question, it's not that easy to be aware of your team mates the whole time because of the "ball locked" camera.. How do you suggest to do that ?

  • @AllstarIV

    @AllstarIV

    6 жыл бұрын

    Being aware doesn't mean you have to see them. If your teammate is going backwards out of offense and you are going forward, but you just took the middle boost, then it is very likely that he went all the way back for the corner boost. So you are aware of his position, and aware of his situation. This will help you decide if you want to shoot and risk giving possession directly to an opponent waiting in goal, or if this isn't a great opportunity to strike, and to hit it into the corner and just buy time for your teammate to get back into play. This is just a hypothetical example, but many things can lead to your awareness. The first thing is to pay attention to what is happening outside of your own car. Once you are paying attention to your own team, and can accurately gauge where they are when they are off screen, then you need to start to become aware of the same details except for your opponents. How much boost do they have? My teammate just stole one of their corner boosts, so is one of them potentially low or out of boost? If they are low on boost then should I play the ball in the air off the backboard for my teammate? Where is my teammate? Well, you should feel that he just stole their boost so he wouldn't have had to rotate all the way back, which led to a boostless opponent sitting in goal--- lets say you only have 20 boost yourself and can't do an aerial play, so in this situation you might be able to hit the ball up to the backboard and your teammate will know you're low on boost so they will go for your backboard rebound. Being aware has very little to do with what is on screen at any given moment, but is rather you extracting information that you see that help you build the picture of the field that you don't see. I would describe it as "feeling" where your teammates are. There is a LOT happening on the field at a time. Understanding your teammates situations will help you see what they are trying to do, and this will help with your awareness for off-screen things.

    I think it is common knowledge that second position has to be very VERY close to first, for suprising the opponent by taking the driblle or shot off of position 1. After that (hit or miss) they should circle each other e few times, until all 3 oppopnents have reached your goal to all three go for the same aerial. Because 3 is the charm, one of them will obviosly hit the ball and maybe even the net. After that former postion 1 and 2 will have to rush up to position three and tell him how much he sucks and that they are happy that he will get cancer and die very soon, or even better kill himelf. In every case they should quickchat "What a save!!" a couple of times and hit the forfeit button

  • @sarneus117
    @sarneus1176 жыл бұрын

    Dont lie allstar, its a fundamental mistake. Omni ran into goal rather than positioning correctly to hit to the right than left. If he hit it right, to you, it would have been 2 opponents left side over committed and you could have boomed it into an ez goal or passed it to Juan for a goal. Hence the fundamental mistake occurred before you even noticed.

    How do I improve my awareness? I'm trying to switch ball cam on and off when going to defense to see what my teammates' positioning looks like but that usually makes me unaware of where the ball is going.

  • @AllstarIV

    @AllstarIV

    8 жыл бұрын

    +IndieArcade I don't turn off ball cam much except to make sure I get boost, or if I can't remember where my teammates are (rare). If that is the case I quickly turn off ball cam and glance to where I think they should be. If they aren't there, then I attack the ball. The rest of the time is about paying attention to them while they are on screen, and noticing when they go off screen and considering WHY they are going off screen. If your teammate just did an aerial and is going back, then you know he's going to be in the area of the middle boost. If you or someone else just grabbed the middle boost then you know he is probably going all the way back for boost. You have to recognize what your teammates, and even your opponents, are doing by observing them with peripheral vision and understanding why they are doing what they are doing. If you are struggling with awareness you may be focusing too much on the ball or your own actions. In the video I believe the Takumi player didn't see me because he was too focused on the corner boost. I put the video in slow motion there so you can clearly see I was on the screen and he should have seen me, but in real time I was only there for a flash and he was so locked in on what he was doing that missed me. That is probably why he turned around and tried to attack the ball, and when he did that, he was focused on hitting the ball and he didn't notice the middle boost was there.

  • @AllstarIV

    @AllstarIV

    7 жыл бұрын

    This is a trust issue. :) If you play solo queues it's probably the most common thing you deal with. Double committing players to aerials, hesitation because of failed positioning or awkward bounces, etc. It's hard to fix if you solo queue because of the constant cycling of teammates. What I would suggest trying, is to give your teammates room to make mistakes, while also not abandoning them if they make the right play. It's a difficult balance to find, but as I said in the video, you have to trust their intentions. If they do make a good pass then you need to be there, but also have in your mind that you may have to sprint back to goal in case he goes up for the ball. If you overcommit to offense and your teammate hesitates then you may be in trouble. You must find the right balance of commitment when you have a teammate that is struggling, so you can cover for their mistakes if necessary. Hopefully they do the same for you. Also, if a player chases his own passes, then you may need to just let them chase and turn your role into game management rather than goal scorer. Every time you pass or shoot, rotate immediately and get back to the third position. Don't try to follow up passes or hard to rebound shots until you feel that you are in control of the game pace and that you and your teammates are on the same page mentally.

    they should put a notice on the main screen of this game: "If you are the furthest back at kickoff, stay in the bloody goal!!" I can't tell you the amount of goals i've had scored against the team I was on because someone fucked off to get boost. You don't even really need to roll forward to get the boost, as what you start with is more than enough to reach every part of the goal should the ball come that way on kickoff

  • @AllstarIV

    @AllstarIV

    3 жыл бұрын

    It kind of depends on your rank. If you're not Diamond at least then just do your best to maximize your positioning and try to learn from experiences and constantly adapt. You'll get better at it the more you play and the higher your rank gets, the more your teammates will also be better positioned. Playing without a team and learning your position is a Skill you have to just get better at over time. My position in 3v3 with 2 random solo queued teammates is different my position in 3v3 with 2 people queued together, and my position in 3v3 with 2 friends is also different.

    @@watashi58 Just keep trying to focus on your best game, and always remember even if you and your teammates do everything right, you can still lose. Sometimes the other team just does everything right a little bit better. If I were you, just focus on your mechanics and get good at being able to consistently hit the ball hard and accurately, then get consistent at hitting the ball hard and accurately in the air, then the same on the walls. You can try to grow every skill all at once, but I think it's better to master each skill individually and incorporate them once you get better. When I was going through my initial growth I really focused for a while on high fast aerials. I think in Silver the biggest skill to grow is your Car Control, and mastery of the connection between your controller inputs and your car. Car Control Mastery is a huge thing, and you should be working towards that by focusing on your hit power, decision making speed, and consistency. At Silver lots of mistakes happen so don't try to fix the mistakes; instead, try to maximize your growth every game. You'll hit many many skill ceilings where you're forced to adapt your gameplay. Once you hit Gold the stuff in Silver needs to be tweaked, like positioning and rotation. The higher you go up in rank the better it gets until it should start looking like what I'm showing you in the video. Once you get into the higher Grand Champion ranks, all bets are off. The flow of the game is natural. When I play I 'feel' where I need to be based on the pace. I can 'feel' where everything is. It becomes easy to fall asleep at the wheel, and getting that focus back is tough. If you experience Slumps, I recommend this video: "Lo3 CSGO - Slumps 101 - How to push past slumps" It's a problem you'll likely run into eventually if you aren't already.

    It doesn't really sound like a strategy issue. You'll want to just regain control of your car quickly as possible in whatever way you can best. If your teammates have good spacing then they should be able to close down the opponent and apply pressure so that you can recover and fall back into rotation. One player getting beat shouldn't normally result in your team conceding a goal. However, if your team is over-committed to offense and you are the last one back when you get bumped, then your team will probably concede.

    How do you know if someone has boost?

  • @AllstarIV

    @AllstarIV

    8 жыл бұрын

    +XTRT GTA It's about piecing together a lot of different small details to understand the bigger picture. The more you can observe quickly the better your awareness will be. In this video all 3 of my team were in the same corner and we know that their team was also in that corner. That is at least 4-5 people that are going to be going for the same boost. We all did Aerials as well, so even if we aren't completely out of boost we are all going to be low and there isn't enough boost to split between us. Then I saw the middle boost was taken by the opposing team so I had to go back all the way. Since the Takumi was in the same area and I just grabbed the boost at the back, I know he has very little boost. When he and I attack the ball at the same time and he didn't use any boost to try to hit it, I can assume he has no boost.

    4:09, How were teammates in a better position to defend? The were behind the ball.

  • @AllstarIV

    @AllstarIV

    8 жыл бұрын

    Me and my teammate were in a goal side position (meaning in between the ball and the goal) so we were in a better position to prevent a shot on goal, whereas the player being focused on was wasting boost flying backwards towards our own goal. Instead he should have rotated into goal to help clear any follow up, but he doesn't. He only has eyes for the ball and every action he takes is dictated by the position of the ball without any consideration for his teammates or opponents positioning. If both myself and my teammate were up field and he was the last defender then his actions may have been understandable, although he started his aerial way too early and wasted lots of boost. A common problem is that players start their aerials so early and they put themselves in awkward positions when staying on the ground would have been much easier and safer for the team. To specifiy, the play I am talking about was his "First aerial" which is the backwards flying aerial towards our own goal to defend the ball bouncing off the wall and towards our goal. The best case scenario is what happened here where he misses everything and we prevent a shot on goal, but if I was positioned more in goal he could have easily hit me instead of the ball and allowed an easy roll in goal.

    Oh, I see now. Thank you for clarifying. I thought you were talking about right after he leaves the boost pad after waiting for it to spawn and actually hits the ball. Really helpful videos by the way, hope some more will be out soon.

    If the last man stays in goal during kick offs, doesnt that mean he doesnt trust that his teammate will make a decent kick off and therefore it goes against trusting your teammates and the first thing you talked about. A small mistake that just happens.

    I also said if you play in a team and know the set play, then it isn't necessary. There are so many variables to this, but trust isn't one. For example, the other team sends two players for the kickoff because they're disorganized, but your team only sends one player. The kickoff could be pinched diagonally and on target for your goal at high speeds. Other things, your teammate could kill the ball in the middle. If your team isn't cheating and the other team is, they have a free shot at goal. Staying in goal is a safe play when you are uncertain. It's just a safe play. Nobody wants to give up free goals without making their opponents earn it.

    Uuuugh. That kick off thing is the MOST annoying thing in playing solo standard. The majority of people don't stay back, and/or don't know when they should take the kick off. Don't know how many goals have happened because the furthest back guy went fir the boost right away, and the front two both go for the ball.

  • @AllstarIV

    This happened to Alpha Sydney in RLCS. One player took the kickoff, Denial cheated, and Alpha Sydney had both of their other two players going for boost. The first goal of RLCS 3 was scored in 3 seconds on a kickoff goal. If your team is cheating then I don't mind the third player going for boost, but in solo standard I've noticed that not many people cheat, and even less people take kickoffs properly. Playing the back man is a safety thing. It keeps your team from conceding a goal in less than 5 seconds because most players don't understand basic kickoff strategy. Maybe... if I get bored enough... I'll make a more in depth video about kickoffs. Don't hold me to that though. I've got to finish a few other videos first.

    For sure. When playing with friends, no problem. We communicate well enough, and usually don't even have to. We know when each of us is going to go for it, and who's going to be defending. But Solo standard, even double(literally just happened to me a game ago) with random players is frustrating.

    This is very difficult to explain. Both players always have to be playing offensive and defensive minded at the same time. If one player on the team is only minding one of the two then they will probably be too far back to capitalize on offensive opportunities, or they will go too far forward and find themselves conceding many open goals. It's very difficult to explain deeper than that without writing a novel. :)

    I tend to find that 2s is closer to 1s, you keep ball possession and just keep pressure on opponents until they make a mistake. It is fast rotation but what I mainly find is that: when opponents have the ball you want one of the players to take them on and the other one (if you trust them) to collect boost to then go help the other. (Just 1 circumstance, there are many others)

    +Austin Gulden In All-Star rank I notice a lot of players don't respect their teammates positioning, similar to my example of all 3 of us going for the same ball. My example is something that happens a lot. The Dominus player going for every Aerial. They think they have to play fast to win, but really they are playing stress ball (Referenced in my RL 202). I believe it's a result of when players only focused on improving their mechanics and haven't put effort into learning game concepts and strategy.

    +Firenyth Sorry I missed this response- Doubles is a little different. In 2s I notice many players go for poor passes and end up leaving open goals for their opponents. You have to make the decision if going for a shot after a pass is the best play or if defending the fast break is more important. A lot of goals also come from successful shots off a pass that are hard into the wall. It's a similar concept in 1s. You dodge forward to power hit the ball, but you miss the goal and the ball bounces back for an easy breakaway for your opponents. It's very different than 3s where chasing is bad in 3s, in 2s its necessary at times to maintain pressure.

    At 1:10, shouldn't you have coming across the field to tuck in behind En Juan JIT RADER? If omnipotz challenged the ball at 1:12, you would have been attacking him. You didn't go back post, this is what made it all so awkward. I like the content, but you failed at rotations from the start.

    I agree and disagree. In 2021's Rocket League, I would say the overall position was poor, but this video was made over 5 years ago and since then, the game changed. There used to be multiple playstyles and team dynamics and in this instance, we sacrificed defense because we couldn't afford to lose possession. The other team was better than us, so we had to try to beat them with a playstyle. For context, this was a Gfinity tournament BO5, this was Game 3 and we lost Game 1 0-3 and Game 2 1-3. We made big changes since we were unable to mount an offense and the changes resulted in a 4-5 Overtime loss. We adjusted our game completely and took a team that dominated us into OT, which is big improvement. Back in 2016, there was also much more team character and flexibility between styles. Today the game is overly simplified and I believe that is because the player skill outgrew the field. With most Grand Champ+ players having very good positioning, pressure, interruptions, transitions, and speed, the game has become two teams executing a similar game plan and whichever makes less mistakes wins. In 2016, gameplay wasn't as optimized as it is today. This is a video that all of the players were either in, or at one point of time were in, the top 100 on the leaderboards. We could sacrifice defense for attack, which is what we had to do against a powerhouse team including names that weren't widely recognized at the time, ViolentPanda (eventual 2x RLCS Champion) and Alot (eventual 2x RLCS Finalist). Today, the gameplay is too efficient and there's not enough space or time to deviate from the meta: Challenge, 50/50, Clear, Challenge, 50/50, Clear, Repeat until Whiff or Bump, 3-5 second window to score. Defense stopped it, or shot missed? Then back to Challenge, 50/50, Clear. In 2021, my positioning in the Top Right is bad since our 2016 team objective didn't align with 2021 meta. The goal was to prevent them from clearing the ball out of their defensive third but in this attempt I wasn't quick enough. Then, on the way back I could do as you said and cross the field and collect boost, or I could secure boost here. I still see this as a viable risk to accept in 2021, if I didn't get the corner boost then ViolentPanda would have it as soon as he gets off the wall and Juan would have just taken the other corner boost. So, if I cross the field, the other team would have control of boost on the field and we'd fall into a very defensive posture since I wouldn't have the boost to follow a clear. We already knew this defensive posture doesn't work since they beat us in the previous two games. We can say I took the wrong path because that's the one we observe, but imagine I went behind Juan. Now neither of are in position to defend and Alot would have an open shot on net. Since I deviated, I didn't block the shot but I did force him to rush it and try to shoot around me, but he wasn't able to hit the target. The position was already not in line with conventional rotation, and the clip you timestamped was only to show that mistakes don't matter. Sweating mistakes over strategy is a quick way to stay stuck in Platinum. Also, I say "This contributed to the breakdown of defensive rotation" and not "This is the reason we got scored on." That's why Juan missing the boost was a mistake that isn't worth discussing as far as strategy goes. It was just a part of my intro to lead the viewer into the point of the video. I didn't break down the entire play since the target audience wasn't how to play against Pros, it was guys trying to make it to the rank of champion. My other clips which I broke down more thoroughly where just in the ranked queue, not tournament clips. I don't mind disagreeing though; it was over 5 years ago and the meta has changed. Rotation needs to be much more precise under the current Challenge, 50/50, Clear meta.
