    If Metallica were a plot, this is Act 1 climax and the next album is Act II's attack point... but we're still developing, not in a resolution/denouement phase. Lots more crises to go from here...

    I don't know why but it took me nearly a decade to appreciate this song. Skipped it for ages, and then one day I heard it playing at a store and it was like a penny-drop moment. Now it's one of my favourites, absolutely epic thrash.

    People have always questioned if what Lars is doing here is authentic. This album was released in 88 and their peak playing was in 89 imo. Battery and whiplash live in Seattle 1989 was the best drumming I’ve seen from Lars and it holds up quite well to dyers eve. The speed in this song isn’t far fetched for how Lars was playing live a year after the release of dyers eve. Then again Metallica has edited stuff before so who really knows. It’s not impossible but improbable.

    He’s admitted the drum parts were pieced together in the studio, but didn’t go into detail. You can get the drum stems online and analyze the sound waves yourself. The real question is, to what degree was this done? At a time when you had to physically cut and paste the actual tape, it would have been extremely tedious, but not out of the ordinary for many thrash bands of the time. Bob Rock has done interviews where he talks about the thousands of cuts and pastes done on the Black Album, and that one is a lot slower. Imagine what had to be done for songs this fast, with zero room for error, then keep in mind this is Lars Ulrich, not Vinnie Paul. To anyone that’s curious, do a Google search for, or look on KZread maybe it’s on here, “Dyers Eve Master Tracks.” Thanks to the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games, these are readily available. Load the drums into Garage Band or whatever is the equivalent for Windows. Then analyze the sound waves, you’ll be able to see if the sound waves repeat identically.

    Excellent points, Chaz! I’ve only been editing drums since 2005, so I’ve always had the benefit of ProTools. It’s tedious, but not as much as it would be with tape. Even still, Lars is notorious for chopping up his parts, so this doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.

    Alright, on the score: *cracks knuckles*.... same. I'm learning now to separate the whole from the parts with regards to how your scoring works, and while I would put Dyer's Eve further up a holistic list, in so much as it's parts are scored individually I'm in agreement. The whole is, however, much greater than the sum of it's parts. That's one of the things Metallica's always been most consistent with across my entire library of music; if there were a metric for W>S(P), my spidey sense says Metallica's work is around 65-75% representative, which hangs right up there with or above the "historical greats" (because they are one). It's "abandoned CD theory", in a way. If an album was left in a CD player on rolling repeat, how long would it take before you got up and changed it?

    It's pretty amazing. Good thing "intensity" isn't one of my criteria, because that'd give Dyers Eve a supremely unfair advantage. Still trying to figure out what "Dyers" is supposed to mean, though. XD

    @@MidnightNotion one interpretation is he's writing a suicide note, like fade to black. "Dear mother, dear father..." The title could be in reference to the phrase "on the Eve of ones dying" hence, Dyers Eve. Maybe that's why the song ends so abruptly. He writes the note, then boom, lights out forever. It's one interpretation that makes sense

  • @MidnightNotion

    @MidnightNotion

    Could be, but if that’s the interpretation, I feel like it would still be “Dyer’s,” because the Eve would be possessive.

    This song is almost everything we wished this album was but didn't end up to be. Great beginning, great "ballad" and great closing track but the rest is just meh. I agree with you on this one, I wouldn't give it more points or less points. 16 is fair. I'm a little sad about Orion, however that top ten is still bad ass and totally cool. We could only wish to hear all those songs in the same live performance 😂 Anyway, I'm very curious about the next album 👌🏻

    What a closer! This song is so damn difficult to play correctly and as tight as the record, it's ridiculous. My drummer and I worked on this song together for WEEKS trying to get it down. It's a testament to James and Lars firing on all cylinders and Kirk stepping up to the plate and actually putting the work in to write a cohesive, memorable solo. Lyrically, I always thought of this as a suicide note, ala Fade to Black. He's venting in the note, then lights out. I gave them a 3. Instrumentally, this gets a 4 all the way. This song requires your big boy pants. You don't start playing guitar and a couple weeks in tackle this song. They are so tight and also the ebb and flow of the drums create the perfect rhythm contrasts and Lars plays the fastest sustained double bass of their career I gotta give Kirk some love,too. This solo is phenomenal. I've never been able to play it all the way through like he does on the record. And in this particular case(THIS SONG) the wah pedal fits really good. So a perfect instrument score. Compositionally, the song is very well done. Having worked on learning the song, I see the inner workings of the composition, and I think they purposely wanted this to be uber complex. It's a tad derivative of the thrash riff in Disposable Heroes, so I docked a point. But otherwise, great song. 3. Memorability:3 easy peasy, lemon squeezy. Emotionally, I give it a 4. I'm always hype for this song, and from beginning to end, it doesn't take it's boot off your throat. Just an amazing way to bookend an album that starts with Blackened. Gave it a 17, it's definitely in my top 10. Next, I guess we're off to Never Never Land...🔥

    I think maybe your H.P love craft thing may be somewhat true. Considering Cliff loved H.P love craft and he was the one who wrote the H.P love craft inspired songs. So maybe James named it Dyers Eve as like some sort of homage to Cliff.

    Dude at 5:00 you are saying that it's not possible to choke the cymbal during the fill but look at Josh Steffen´s drum cover of this song on youtube he does it without any problems, and to be honest even i can play that because it's a very easy fill if you ask me ;)

  • @MidnightNotion

    You know what's funny? I literally JUST watched Josh's cover before seeing this comment. He does pull it off. However, Josh Steffen is a MUCH better drummer than Lars is. Lars has never demonstrated basically any knowledge of rudiments. His first (and only?) single-stick roll doesn't show up until Load's "Until it Sleeps," his first (and only?) side-stick isn't until "Nothing Else Matters," and as far as I can tell, 99.999% of his fills are RLRLRLRL. The more I consider it, the more I can be convinced that he could have pulled it off in the '80s, but if you take a look at the live performances, he definitely doesn't do the mutes anymore.

    @@MidnightNotion hahaha awesome dude! But yeah trust me iknow Lars is the biggest reason i play drums and i love the guy, but jesus christ he is by far the worst drummer i have ever heard when i comes to live shows. Don't get me wrong i have seen metallica live 6 times and i have absolutely loved it every time. But there is no denying that he barley is capable of playing the drums and keeping time because no other drummer is this bad at actually staying true to what is played on the albums. And dont get me started on how little he knows about drumming in general lol But with all that said i dont hate the guy in any way im just really sad that the only thing that is keeping metallica from making really awesome and complex music is Lars lazy drumming. But if you really want to laugh, watch them perform sad but true in Stockholm 2015 this is one if not the worst Lars performance i have ever seen that or the Live version of to live is to die ;)

    I HATE what he does to the chorus of Sad But True. It’s so ridiculous! 🤣 I’ve been saying for a while that I’m hoping with all my heart that his older age and inability to play fast will lead to more Load/Reload tracks coming into the setlist. They’re a lot more middle and slower tempo, and lots of underrated stuff.
