Very helpful, thanks. Think you should tighten the bolts in order and gradually in increments instead of going for the correct torque on each straight away, that's what I have to do with our old Austin seven.

The mayo gunk can be from short stop start journeys. I know people think the worst and automatically think head gasket, but for peace of mind get it checked out at a garage.

The creamy residue you see is in the plug channel not in the cam area so not your head gasket that residue is caused by coolant getting in where the plugs are and the usual suspect is the core plugs that you can see spaced between the plugs and on your model looks to be the Allen screw in ones so will need to be removed cleaned up and refitted with a bit of locktite and that should stop the coolant getting into to plug area and causing a misfire over time if not done hope that helps you out 😊

How did you remove the rubber seats that the airbox sits on before you need the 15mm to undo the rear bolts? As far as i can tell they don't stretch over the top?

I hadn't picked up that the gunk was in the spark plug cover and not near the cams. Maybe one of the spark plugs weren't in tight enough (could explain poor running) allowing some blow by and then if the gasket wasn't sealing allowing condensation in. Hopefully not worst case head gasket.

Im baffled, what is that clip called - the cable that was blocking the cover from being lifted 5:10. How did you remove it, assuming you are active and can reply. Do you press on the metal bit or something. I cannot find it for the life of me. I would appreciate it very much if you could give me this knowledge. I am learning.

Daniel Storey yes I managed to get it off. I got a very small flat screwdriver and a hammer and I just tapped the screwdriver between the cover and the block. Not the correct way to do it because I scratched the block. If you use this method, be sure to have a new gasket and gasket sealer. No leaks to report 3 months down the line, so you should be fine.
