"Stairway to Heaven" is a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin, released in late 1971. It was composed by the band's guitarist Jimmy Page and lead singer Robert Plant for their untitled fourth studio album (often titled Led Zeppelin IV). The song is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock songs of all time. "Stairway to Heaven" was voted number three in 2000 by VH1 on its list of the 100 Greatest Rock Songs, in 2004 Rolling Stone magazine ranked "Stairway to Heaven" number 31 on its list of "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". In November 2007, through download sales promoting Led Zeppelin's Mothership release, "Stairway to Heaven" reached number 37 on the UK Singles Chart.
Led Zeppelin began recording "Stairway to Heaven" in December 1970 at Island Records' new recording studios on Basing Street in London. The song was completed by the addition of lyrics by Plant during the sessions for Led Zeppelin IV at Headley Grange, Hampshire, in 1971. Page then returned to Island Studios to record his guitar solo.
The untitled fourth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV, was released on 8 November 1971 by Atlantic Records.
The informal recording environment inspired the band, allowing them to try different arrangements of material and create songs in various styles. After the band's previous album Led Zeppelin III received lukewarm reviews from critics, they decided their fourth album would officially be untitled and would be represented instead by four symbols chosen by each band member, without featuring the name or any other details on the cover.

I'm partial to "Over The Hills And Far Away". "Dazed And Confused" is also one of my favorites. Thanks for asking👍 "Battle Of Evermore" from this album is a unique sounding song with interesting lyrics.

Legendary, magnificent and magical. Be sure to check out Heart's rendition of this honoring Led Zeppelin as they were awarded a Kennedy Centers Honor. Amazing cover and they did justice to the song and also brought a tear to Robert Plant's eye.

I just discovered this channel! Really great analysis! I truly enjoyed it! I'm not sure how familiar you are with all of Led Zeppelin's catalogue, but it would be doubly interesting to see you do an analysis of one of their songs that you are hearing for the first time. Anyways, it's almost impossible to pick 1 or 2 songs to recommend because Led Zeppelin had so many great songs featuring so many different styles of music, but after thinking about it, I would love to see you react 2 Led Zeppelin songs to start. The first song proceeds Stairway to Heaven on the Led Zeppelin IV album and it is a duet (the only duet Led Zeppelin ever did) featuring Robert Plant and Sandy Denny on vocals. Truly an awesome piece of art that I would love to get your opinion of. The 2nd song is "Since I've Been Loving You" off of the album Led Zeppelin III. Again, it would be awesome to get your opinion on this masterpiece. I subscribed! Peace

Loved your review of this. I do understand when people quote this as greatest song etc, but there are many others I would rate highly too. As for another Led Zeppelin track. I’d recommend Since I’ve Been Loving You album version - there’s some interesting musical choices made that I think add to it’s appeal (you may disagree with that, but that’s why I think it would be a great track to analyse)

The song is slowly building up to that famous solo ... the solo is telling an epic story that sounds like with every note and bend from the strings its destination is conquered . It ends strong after the solo , than very quietly it ends as it started. Just my two cents 😅 the guitar solo is very melodic

The silent killer for LZ, JPJ, is playing a recorder (Mellotron). It's a keyboard with pre-recorded instrumental sounds stored on it so the song could be duplicated live, where he also played the base tones using foot pedals. Jimmy Page is well regarded as ahead of his time in terms of writing and producing music. He wrote or co-wrote and produced/arranged most of the music, with Plant generally supplying the lyrics. Fans of LZ will tell you that they literally never produced a bad track, just some that were better than others. Perhaps the testament to this is that the music sounds fantastic 52 years after it was released?

In case if anybody is interested, the best Metal song to address the Satanic Panic that I have ever heard is "Devils Child" by Rebellion - a German band created by the guitarist and the bassist that have left Grave Digger, which is also a very good band. Btw the Rebellion debut album is a conceptual "Shakespeare's Macbeth - A Tragedy in Steel" and they are mostly writing historical concept albums; a Metal hymn is a bit of an outlying song for them.

Oh, boy. Where to begin? Thank you for the review of Stairway to Heaven. Very thoughtful and intelligent. I give you high marks for the endeavor. I think, however, that you missed the target on two salient points. First, Robert Plant's vocals. Throughout the song they are, by my estimate, a 10 out of 10. No question. Beautiful, lyrical, poetic, magical, and slowly growing in strength and profundity. Blissfully powerful at the end. Yes. His vocals are a 10/10. No question. Also, you neglected to mention the guitar solo. Why did you not grade Jimmy Page's guitar solo? How could it go unnoted, unnoticed? That flummoxed me. Page's solo is as profound as the lyrics. Elegiac, mystical, turning, burning, rising up to a majestic crescendo. Completely fitting the arc of the song. Oh, Lord. Unparalleled in rock music. I give Page's solo a 10/10. How not? Please do not dismiss my praise out of hand. Think about it. Consider it. Meditate once more on the song and I think you'll agree with me, or, at least, I hope so. Thank you again for your contribution to this song, band, and genre. Best regards, Jonathan

Very ironic how this song could be such an iconic rock anthem, yet eventually be resented by the man who co-wrote it. Robert Plant said in later interviews that the song basically was a victim of its own success. He felt it was critically perceived as a pinnacle of the group's songwriting that could never again be achieved, and he grew to hate performing it. He once even went so far as to donate $1,000 to a radio show benefit when it said it would never play the song again if it reached its donation target. As recommendations go, Francis, were you to review another intricately-composed Zeppelin song, give "The Rain Song" a critical listen. Arguably, one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Mixed feelings about Zeppelin, but I've always loved this song since the first time I heard it in the early 80s. This was the first song of theirs I ever heard and it made most everything else I heard from them afterwards a bit disappointing. I've been on a huge 70s bender for the last few weeks, so this was a nice listen. I knew this one would get a high score from you. Maybe some Elton John would be a good addition to the channel. I'd also love to hear your analysis of Hotel California.

Mixed feelings on Zep ... Really !! Nobody was BIGGER than Zep from late 69 through 78 and it was not even close . Stones, Deep Purple , Cream , Black Sabbath NOBODY and I mean nobody bigger and more popular than them during that time. 1978 was a worry for fans of them never getting going after Plants son died RIP and punk was taking over .... Scratch that in 79 they release a new album In through the Outdoor straight to #1 all that new wave , punk and Zep being called dinosaur Rock still had it . Not my favorite album but if Jimmy would of gotten better which I think he would of and of course Bonham lived there next album would of been back to Wearing and Tearing anew sound but a heavier sound that would of been the new sound , add the Physical Graffiti sound . The small Euro tour of 80 and of course Knebworth 79 and the warm up shows proves Zep would of been big in the 80's. The US tour that first leg that was already selling was going just as fast as 77 . Zep would of and could of IF Jimmy and BONZO got a bit better and Plant if he would of still wanted it . Zep the biggest band in the world and it was NEVER close . That's FACTS 💯

@@keitha.563 I really don't care how big they were or who else likes them. My personal opinion is generally 'meh' when it comes to them. I've heard every album and out of all them, there are maybe 5 or 6 songs that I really like. I understand and appreciate their influence, but aside from a few songs, I don't really care to listen to them.

I respect that fact that every band is not for every listener. Given the fact that the variety and competition for listeners was perhaps at its historical high between 1967 and 1984, I think LZ and their fans can hold their heads high at how the band is perceived some 55 years after it was formed. VH-1's 100 greatest artists list, done in 1998 and revised in 2010, placed LZ 3rd behind only the Beatles and MJ, that is certainly high praise!@@keitha.563

Metal? Many so called metal guitarist say this is the best guitar solo ever! Jimmy Page pretty much gave birth to metal especially on the first album with days and confused! At the three minute mark Jimmy Page and John Bonham gave birth to metal! Jimmy the original shredder! Jimmy inspired Steve Vai Joe satriani and even Eddie Van Halen! And metal is hard rock it was just renamed metal it's still hard rock no matter how you play it! Metal was a term invented in the United States! That's why Zeppelin and Black Sabbath deep purple and many other bands hate the term heavy metal! Has Tony iomi said we're just a rock band that was labeled heavy metal! It all started with Zeppelin they changed the music scene and everyone else followed!
