ROCK RODS TECH TIP - How to Shave a 14 Bolt

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On this Rock Rods Tech Jake Burkey shows you how to shave a 14 bolt axle for added clearance using a TMR customs 15 bolt kit. There are two versions of the kit. One kit requires machining of the ring gear and the other shave kit does not. It just depends on how much extra clearance you want on your axle.
Here is the link to order this shave kit and more- bustedknuckleoffroad.com/14-Bo...

I repair broken boat exhaust manifolds. Midwelding works great. I don't know why but for some reason it really works well to weld cast iron. Plus the heat process of course.

+legoMan104 A fellow bleeping jeep fan. I really enjoy these rock rods tip videos and videos where they actually display the workings of these rock bouncers instead of just watching them driving offroad. Bleeping jeep is awesome because its just regular guys doing cool projects in modest shops that most guys can achieve. Not everyone has the disposable income for this level of rockcrawlers and bouncers they show in this channel. Still love the videos though.

Ill have to look up the wire but there is a high silicon wire that has really good characteristics for welding cast

For stick welding you require a Nickel/Cadmium rod, not just Nickel, however, there is a rod ($6.00 ea.) that requires no pre heating. Check with your local supplier. I will make a call tomorrow and post another comment.

montwolfman 7018 stick or basic mig wire and some added heat if its really cold where the work is done. If the metal is caked in oil/grease clean it off before sanding or grinding as to not contaminate the metal ...weld in cycles to minimize heat ...more heat the more expansion and the more contraction on cool down ...welds crack things warp . You just don't need the magic heat dance putting parts in the wife's oven or exotic filler materials for this job ...But feel free to over complicate a simple job.

Great information . However, what is the difference in ground clearance over a d60 or a d44 , seeing that those are extremely popular and are most likely what these 14 bolts are replacing ?? Thanks in advance for any response

there isn't much ground clearance difference between a shaved 14bolt and Dana 60 but the overall strength difference makes the 14bolt the right choice.

Pre heat like a mofo on cast, and I use 312 stainless tig wire. I've done a couple of these shaves with no leaking or cracks. As for post weld, I use blankets and a cardboard box to cool slowly. You need a huge sandbox for a diff haha

2 inch gain under the pumpkin is a fair increase...lol...that would take a true 4 inch tire diameter increase to achieve and 2 inches is the difference from hanging and going nowhere vs walking easily over a big ass rock . I run a 44 tsl on my 14 and think the 2 inches I got from the Ballistic kit was worth it even with a 44 ...lol...I think guys with a tire like a 38.5 sx would absolutely need it since 44s were still hanging the diff stock pre cut and plate .
