Rock N' Roll History: 1959 Gibson BURST! THE HOLY GRAIL

Музыка

Nathaniel leads the CME House band like no one else can, with incredible skill and an authentic ‘59 ‘Burst to boot. Behold this 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard, the most collectible of all Gibson guitars, and perhaps all guitars, period, presented in action alongside a 1959 ES-335. Nathaniel explains how this guitar came to be one of the most coveted in history and how we were once fortunate enough to have three of them.
The Les Paul Standards made by Gibson between 1958 and the end of 1960 represent the very pinnacle of American electric guitar craft and rank as the most collectable vintage guitars on the market. These years were the only ones where the Les Paul Standard was built with a flamed maple top with a cherry sunburst finish, a stopbar tailpiece and tune-o-matic bridge, as well as a pair of PAF humbuckers. An estimated 1700 of the mythical "Burst" Les Pauls still exist today

Tops like that are so much more attractive to me than these super duper contrasting flame tops you see a bunch today. I’ve seen some that look way to uniform and zebra like, I think it’s silly. That burst he’s holding is BEAUTIFUL.

Yeah there are only a few of us that prefer the more subdued flame top. I really do not care for the ones that have that over the top ultra symmetrical striping(pin striping is what it is called?) Some look like they were designed by a computer program. I actually prefer flames that look more quilted. Real wide and not real uniform. More random

It really would be senseless to sell one at this point . They are worth more than money. I wouldn't even trade one for gold . I don't think anyone can manipulate its value at this point ! I would just make sure I had sensible offspring to pass it to (with a legally binding agreement ) ,or have it put in a special vault that was bomb proof and war proof with a 1000 year time lock .

I picked up a 2012 Les Paul (a model they call the Traditional Pro 2) for around $1.5K a couple years ago, and it makes all those sounds I've been trying to achieve for years with "cheaper" guitars. There's something about a Les Paul that is really hard to capture with anything else. I had an LP Studio for many decades, but it never sounded like my LP, not even close.

According to CME, their exclusive custom pickups are wounded to imitate this particular burst, which is now stored in the display case at the center of the store. When I got my lp custom from them, I was told that they don't want to sell it, because it adds more sophistication to the shop, as well as helping them get better guitars.

What people need to understand about these bursts is that the capacitors change over time. They're capacitance increases, thereby making them sound darker. Look at vintage strats. They sound darker as well. People like Luxe Radio are making recreations of the old Sprague capacitors exactly to the same specs and manufacturing process they used to, and I'd like to see some of the bursts and other vintage guitars get them. That way, we can truly hear how they were meant to be heard, and how they WERE heard, back in the 50s. So people should not blame the guitar for it sounding too dark! One quick capacitor change could make it shine, cause each one of these, manufacturing wise, is solid GOLD

They'd take off a ton off the value if they re-fretted it. That's up to the buyer to do if they want. Unfortunately, it'll probably go into a collection and never be played again. That's the real shame with these genuine originals.
