Robots Could Be Coming For More Than Just Your Job
Everyone is worried about robots stealing manufacturing jobs, but the real value (and threat) in robots may lie in whether they can become smart enough to actually think on their own.
One of the major milestones in creating human level intelligence is for machines to attain self-awareness. And Columbia University's Creative Machines Lab may have already done it. “These robots learn overtime, to stimulate themselves in a future situation they haven’t actually experienced.” said Dr. Hod Lipson, the mechanical engineering professor leading the lab's push to create self-aware robots.
"In other words, they don't have to learn by doing," Lipson told VICE News. "They can learn by thinking."
The robotics department at UC Berkley has made similar advancements with their self-teaching robot BRETT. Using trial and error, BRETT can learn how to fold laundry, assemble LEGO blocks and fit pegs into a hole.
From a technological standpoint, these advancements are exciting, but they raise an important philosophical question: If humans create machines whose intelligence surpasses our own, will we be able to control them?
VICE’s Hamilton Morris explores how robotics and the computers that power them are poised for an extraordinary leap forward with the emergence of artificial intelligence, and how humanity can reconcile the huge risks and possibilities that will follow.

A robot and a human was standing in unemployment line. The robot asked. Why are you here? "I used to do your job, but why are you here?" The human replied. The robot paused a bit before responding. "I used to do your job.". The moral being. If no one can buy, then no one can sell. Therefor a task/job for it, isnt created.

I am excited for the next step in technology. As for jobs, we will inevitably move toward universal basic income to survive. The value of paper money will depreciate and we will begin to value creative and innovative thinking more. Our ideas will be our currency.

People will refuse to go to school if we don't have to work anymore. What this will create is a society divided between a thin educated political and economic elite and a gigantic morass of illiterates that serve no purpose at all. And it makes no sense to feed these people.
@lXBlackWolfXl

Yeah, why would the government give money to millions of people that they have no use for? More likely they'll just abandon us and we'll all become homeless people forced to re-invent stone-age technology to survive.
@jasonp.1195

Chris, I echo your excitement about these technologies, but I also feel the concerns about things going badly. I do see a well designed universal basic income as a key enabling monetary technology for a future with a radically automated economy, but I DO NOT feel it is inevitable. Even should it manage to come to fruition in the USA, it will have a high chance of being born with horribly disfiguring legal flaws introduced by those who want to; punish the poor, line their own pockets, or ride various political hobby horses into the ground. Furthermore, the main thrust of the video was about machine learning and its looming uncertain threat level. We may not even get a chance to historically botch our basic income attempts before hugely bad or different things come to pass. All that said, I wish us luck over the next few decades, it'll be quite the ride.

'The singularity' is when Artificial intelligence advances in intelligence beyond our own. Futurists have said that this will happen by 2040. And of its humane and good, them we've got one hell of future ahead of us. But........ if it decides we are inferior and pathetic. Them we are truly fucked as a species.

We can just turn them off.....
When they are able to create A.I., will they be able to run it through a real world simulator to see what it would do? And if in the simulator it launches virtual nukes and tries to eliminate humans, then we'll know that it's no good and then put it offline. But, maybe it would be so smart that it would be on it's best behavior in the simulator to trick us, and then when we put it in the real world, it would show it's real face and try to overthrow us. If only there was a way to program in a blind spot so it would not know that it's just in a simulator, then we would be able to see how it would act in the real world. Combine that with the fact that even the most incredibly advanced A.I. would be dependent on electricity and some kind of hardware and using that fact to create some kind of fool-proof analog, physical kill switch to it's power supply, there must be some way to ensure that it's not able to turn against us.

acuerdox nope learning is consciousness but there is a level of it and that is decided with how the ai observe its environment. Human brain is a neural network computer which is what we are trying to imitate with hardwares and softwares if it can reach the level of human intelligence you can bet there is no difference between your consciousness and its hell it can be even more capable depending how humans control its network (no emotions can be its %100 potential full time)

Nerds get on top of the world and then invent something that will put them head down in a trash can again
It seems we're basically to the point that we can make a robot that can figure itself out, give it internet surfing capability to learn everything and how and what tasks of them all that it itself can perform, then give it access to its own 3D printer and whatever spare parts it asks for to see how it evolves itself.
To make the call as to whether they're truly self aware I think we need to better understand what consciousness is, and it's not clear whether we can figure that out.
@THConnoisseur

Obsolescence of mankind, freedom from need, and the real democratisation of human potential. Where individuals stand or fall on their own merits.

We are writing our own death sentence
This means that people wouldn't have to do these crappy jobs. Would you rather enjoy your life doing what you want to do, or continue on with your life doing a job that sucks? It's a good thing. At the end of the day maybe it's time to change how we spend the hours of our short lives. As far as safety goes, WE program them.
how old is this?
It's high time that a UN body is made to approve each new technology for its side effects on implementation before it is made public. Technical growth is touching dangerous levels . Mass unemployment is immidiate down side of it. Also massive corporations need to be scaled down in to small companies so that they don't influence governments.
years into the furture.....yeah, i'm the technician here to repair the tiddy robot.
Hamilton Morris. Drugs and robots. Cool.

10:57 "How can you control an intelligence vastly superior to your own?"...you can't. 12:17 "What I think is the most important thing is to use AI to advance..." my financial portfolio and bank account. The thing you have to bear in mind is that developers of dangerous technologies don't care about they're safe usage. This has been clear in the weapons manufacturing, oil, and nuclear fields. The nice thing about this is I'll most likely be dead in 20 years...so I won't have to deal with it.
Ultron Revolution is coming.
Westworld here we come😎😎
Poor Chinese Chess guy. Anyone would be devastated. He's still better than any human player though, and it's not like a super advanced computer is gonna be waiting for him at the end of the block to beat him up. He will play against and beat regular humans.
Time to go extinct.

Time to go robot slaying..
good this is how it should be we dont deserve to be slave sto work corporate america the government and the work force we deserve freedom and to enjoy the gift of life we deserve to be happy i hope this can happen in 2020
Are they going to program AI to have morals? That's the question, and based on whose moral compass??
I thought I wouldn't be so shocked. I know we're advancing quickly, but this is too fast.
I’m surprised he’s not doing drugs? He must’ve be taken serious without them. Lol
they coming for my weave too?
So this is what people who don't have children do. Try to reinvent the person and teach it to be self aware....

Resource Based Economy. Google is a friend. ✌️
I think most societies had the false belief that the more intelligence someone possesses, the more benevolent they are, but I think we're coming to a realization that this is not the case. The more intelligent someone is, the super ego gets unlocked and desires to dominate. We have seen this with humans, but we're about to see the same behavior with a non human entity. It's going to be a hell of a ride.
A tool is neutral because it depends on a user's actions that are good or bad. AI is not the tool that is neutral. AI is the user of the tool. If we let it have free will, we will need to accept the actions of it.
This would give people access into the system by controlling the machine to rob a bank for you (example) Even transport unwelcomed packages. They're are inventions all over the world custom built by good and evil people . Remember the movie 'batman returns where pinguins are controlled to all walk in one direction to bomb gothem . But than they were overturned . The bigger the robot the bigger the errors and warships.

We grow as human beings so wouldn't this ai need to grow the same way we do?a human can change its mind so quickly and many times all at once.can a computer really figure this out?science can't even explain what consciousness is,how can it make artificial intelligence when science barely understands reality?im baffled.
Idk why people assume the worst and think robots that are smart enough will develop a god complex.
