Robots are coming to the massive ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach

Robots are coming to the massive ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, replacing dockworker jobs. But truckers are delighted, since they'll be able to move cargo faster, earning more money.

    When I lived in San Diego, the DMV visit took 2-3 hours just to hand in a form and get it stamped. I moved to Tennessee and was in and out in 3 minutes flat, no line. Part of it is population but if you have a bigger population (millions of drivers/cars on the road), increase the staffing proportionally or automate it. Those slow clerks are going to find their jobs gone to robots.

    It’s mind boggling they are not trying to hustle working extra shifts (they have plenty of part-time workers) with ships with crews stuck in the ports waiting to be unloaded for weeks and truckers waiting for as long as 4 hours like get your ass in gear holy this is why people hate unions they don’t hustle to meet deadlines bc they think they can never be fired

    it's striking to me that the dock workers have posed their fight against automation as some kind of patriotic "standing up for the american worker" battle, while at the same time there are other american workers that they work right next to and see everyday, at least in passing, whose livelihoods are hurt by the lack of automation. and now, as i write this comment, we are amidst a supply chain crisis emanating from a backup of the ports which has hurt every american worker in the cost of everyday goods. makes you wonder if such political posturing really has the working class in mind, or if people just convince themselves of what they need to in order to justify pushing their own interests.

    The robots will be just another expensive experiment in the end imo. Slower than people, tons of maintenance issues. The issue at most ports isn't the longshoreman, it's the insufficient way the containers are organized in the yards. Even if the robots do win out eventually, its still another 12-20 years out, in which most longshoreman that came up in this will be retired. Outside of family tradition, there aren't too many people coming in off the street looking to make a lifelong career as a longshoreman anymore, even family, very few of the heirs that come into longshoreman are really interested in it long term anyway and that's who automation will be affecting the most, automation isn't going to completely wipe out the need for longshoreman it will lessen the need for more new longshoreman.

    @@zyclownb3154 Yeah, but this isn't China. What people fail to realize is that Chinese ports are far ahead of the US in terms of automation. They have specifically designed a lot of their ports for automation unlike the US, and for good reason. China is mainly an exporter and the population of China is an estimated 1.398 billion people, but that doesn't mean that those fully automated ports don't have a ton of issues. I'm quite sure they do. Automating existing US ports is an entirely different animal though, it will be decades before you see something like that occur in the USA, what you will begin to see is part automation of ports.

  • @zyclownb3154

    @zyclownb3154

    @@ybe87 The Chinese are more pragmatic than Americans. Even if the US is just using them to unload the ships for Imports it just makes more sense to fully automate it than pay a bunch of longshoremen 200K each to take two hour lunches. The total cost of goods will be less and US exports will become more competitive if it reduces the port/shipping cost. Sure it’s going to have flaws, so what, I’m sure the roomba 1.0 had flaws. Take politics and biases out of it, Pretend you’re an alien that just came to earth and you see how we’re doing things here it just doesn’t make sense.

  • @ybe87

    @ybe87

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@zyclownb3154 Most Longshoreman do not make 200K a year. No where near that in fact, and there's only 1 lunch per 8 hr shift. Here in FL starting out, a LS is lucky to make 18-30K for the 1st few years, (a lot stay at this level because they just do it as a part time job) By mid level it's somewhere around 35-50k and high seniority is like 60-80K or less. To make more than that you must work day and night shifts, drive crane or be a Supervisor. It's really nothing more than a middle class job. All that 200K talk is a bunch of BS ftmp. So with that said no it actually doesn't make sense to fully automate ports in the US yet, being that most ports don't even do that much volume to begin with, it's not like China here and that's why I stated it would be nothing more than a expensive experiment. Fact is a lot of ports are already undergoing reconstruction and there's not much automation taking place in those plans, as I said previously it will be 15-20+ years before you see that come to fruition all across the USA. LA has an automated terminal but it's not that good from what I've heard..
