I wanted to buy this, I was excited for it. The fact it is grainy is no issue for me. I am skipping it because it doesn't have the original audio. That is the major disappointment for me. It's the same reason I have never purchased the Terminator on blu-ray. Robotech is a major part of my life as well but I just could never get used to the rerecorded audio with updated sound effects. I will stick with my old DVDs.

@@CerealAtMidnight Sure, the original DVD releases from 2001 (aka The Legacy Collection) are the original as broadcast in the 80s versions. The Protoculture Collection (blue box set) that you are talking about has revised audio. It also contains additional scenes (nudity, more violence) that were not shown on tv. I like the Protoculture box for the same reasons you do, the extras are terrific but the shows themselves are not what I fell in love with in the 80s. I was hoping that these blu-rays would rectify this but sadly that is not the case. So I will never part with my original DVDs. =o)

I will give you a good reason to buy this set over all other sets. They have reinserted scenes that were cut from the original broadcast version that definitely improve the experience. These were cut for violence and adult themed content like Jeanne in Southern Cross showering or taking a bath. Now we can finally see Dana Sterling doing these things with Robotech music and thus making it a more adult show. It's definitely better to watch it this way. I don't have the Protoculture edition, but I think the grain that you can see is actually what it was meant to be. It's hand drawn animation as this channel has stated. It's normal for it to look grainy. It looks like animation and not a CGI show. The sound effects change the experience in ways that aren't always good, but that's the price you have to pay for better picture quality and added scenes that were cut for television.

First time viewer of the channel and I wanted to share with you some information on why there is a ton of negative review on this set: Harmony gold has in their possession old 16mm prints that are not in the best of shape. They have burned a lot of bridges over the years so the chances of them getting ahold of the proper masters from japan from Big West are almost zero. in 2012 Big West remastered and released Macross on Blu-ray in Japan and it has a cleaner picture with a lot of detail that was washed out of this transfer that harmony gold did. While Big West and Harmony Gold did finally solve the legal battle that took 20 years, the chances of Big West actually handing those masters over to Harmony Gold to release Robotech is next to none honestly, maybe for use for a Macross Blu-ray in the future, but not for Robotech. With the current materials that harmony gold and funimation have to work with, this is the best Robotech will ever look. Southern Cross has never received a remaster or blu-ray release in japan, and Tatsunoko did release Mospeada on blu-ray with a remaster in Japan. This set could had some post production to clean up the visuals, but honestly without the legends that are the team at discotek media, such restoration projects don't happen in the industry. its a servicable release and its nice to at least get a better rip of the southern cross footage that until now was only on dvd. I picked this up for the collection just to have, and i am mainly just waiting for Big West to announce a licensing agreement with funimation or another company on when the rest of the Macross Franchise is getting a blu-ray release. keep up the great work!

I have a question for you. Is the blu-ray remaster photographed in 16x9 format? (Were the original cells photographed in a wide aspect ratio and cropped for normal television 4:3) Or is the Blu-ray in the 4:3 aspect ratio? I wish he would have mentioned this in his video. I also noticed that the sample pictures of the remaster look over saturated and over contrasty (light colours look blown out compared to the TV broadcast that I had recorded on video tape (maybe caused by degradation of the film)).

@@reptomicus Ya, I kinda figured that. On the DVD version I have you can see the rounded corners of the film frame in some scenes. I used Handbrake to set them up on my Plex server, and I cleaned up a lot of the grain. Looks quite good, just a few spots the software didn't seem to know quite what to do with it. But in my edition there are scenes where it looks terribly pixelated (on the original DVD). It is like they lost the original footage in those spots and resorted to using digitized video tape.

If you need another example, it’s called the deculture edition. Fans took the blu ray of Macross and put the audio of Robotech over it. The Macross blu ray is super clean, and shows how you can actually clean up old animation. The grain that exists in the new collections is not original grain, which is the problem. kzread.info/dash/bejne/X2qA0Y-BocabYNo.html

I do follow Robotech dvd saga and the drama since the 2002 they alter the sound effects because the original masters were lost in a studio fire. They had to rely on Laser disk and VHS copys from Blockbuster Video to revive the whole series which I don’t blame them. They wanted to revive the series and the Digital remastered version they had to removed the old shooting sound effects. If you want a reference look up The movie Macross Do you Remember Love that had the original sound effects from the TV show.

Hey, I just watched your review (on my 4K TV), and I have some questions. I didn't watch Robotech back in the 1980s and instead got into it in the early-to-mid-2000s when it was released on DVD. Out of those early DVD releases, I decided to buy The Legacy Collection (the 7-box set), which seemed the most complete to me. This is the original, aired version of Robotech, before they made Robotech Remastered: Extended Edition (which I didn't buy on DVD). I had recently bought the Macross Saga Blu-ray at Walmart but left it unopened until I could read reviews. Then I decided to hit KZread, and what you're saying makes sense. Thank you. Question #1: Compared to The Legacy Collection, does The Protoculture Collection have any extra extras? Question #2: I read somewhere that Robotech II: The Sentinels was remastered somewhere. Possibly on The Protoculture Collection. Is that true? If so, what was changed? Question #3: Will Robotech II: The Sentinels be released on Blu-ray? Question #4: Will Codename: Robotech be released on Blu-ray? Question #5: Will Robotech: Love Live Alive be released on Blu-ray? I've never seen this, but I'm interested in seeing it, even though it's just a glorified extended clip show ala Codename: Robotech. Question #6: I watched a split-screen comparison video of the opening theme of The Macross Saga from The Protoculture Collection and the Blu-ray, and it's obvious that the titles were redone. Seemingly different font (or at least different effect) and lack of "The Macross Saga". Was anything else altered for the Blu-ray release? Is it still the Extended Edition with all of the extra footage intact?

to be honest; from the beginning of the 4k revolution, it's been way overhyped. going from 480i to 1080p was the actually big deal. Sadly the Japan blurays AV is superior as its scanned from the original negative vs Harmony's replica, it would've been nice if they took the AV from that and re-edited the episodes again and applied the original english audio (not the 5.1 mix) and provided the new ADV dub as an alternative which didn't finish before resuming the 5.1 mix as an alternative english audio track for the remainder of the episodes. It would of course probably require $500k to do it and there's not enough fans to cover the costs I've owned numerous releases and still prefer the original audio mix & original opening/closing which has basically vanished at this point sadly. The show is meant for oldskool fans yet they keep on jazzing it up like a Michael Bay movie

At least with 35mm movies, the film grain is technically able to be better than 4K equivalent. That's why movies pre-late 90's look so great when scanned to 4K. In the late 90's and early 2ks movies went digital and unfortunately at a lower resolution than 4K. That's why something "old" like The Fifth Element is natively 4K when something relatively "new" like Tron Legacy is upsampled to 4k.

I HATE when they remove grain. That's just how it looks. If you don't want it to look like it's original source, stick to new shows/movies. Better quality should just bring it as close to the original source as possible, not smudge it up and smooth it out artificially.

I do have Blu ray closed captions/ subtitles that I'm very happy. Because I'm Deaf need read what they say than without CC or subtitles. I do remember back 80s on TV show had come with closed captions. Till saw VHS I check there have closed captions.. later saw they keep changed new design case and started confused remix and missing originals tv show . Had to wait till released DVD the first one robotech released saw there have closed captions and watch movie I was Soo upset there no closed captions and knew those movie was not original from TV show something had add show never seen before. Till I got Blu ray robotech released I was very excited and saw grains I was puzzle I'm not complaint about that issue but the sounds was so low couldn't hear very well had to turn higher volume. "A copy from the original film that Harmony Gold have." That's absolutely correct, and I don't believe anything in this review says otherwise. This Robotech restoration was sourced from the best available film elements. I'm sure the Japanese elements for Macross are better, butt those weren't available. They haven't been made available, and it is possible that they never will be made available for North America. As long as I've been a Robotech fan, people have been talking about a superior source for Macross, but it never shows up. If we get Macross from the original source material, I'll dance with joy, but until then, if that day ever even comes, Funimation provided fans with the highest resolution image that has ever been available for Robotech (note I didn't say Macross). And yes, it comes from film, and no, it's not from the Japanese master prints.

@@CerealAtMidnight The agreement between Harmony Gold and Big West was announced in April of this year, months before Funimation released this horrendous version. They could well have made an agreement to use or have access to the Japanese remasters. But they didn't do it out of sheer pride, and Harmony Gold's zero interest in keeping Robotech. They are more interested in making a measly profit with the law of least effort. And there is also what is an open secret that Robotech has become another of Farouk Frank Agrama's money laundering fronts. And by the way, Funimation is one of the worst anime distributors in the West. I'm not a Robotech fan, I've already passed that stage. But even I realize that the changes made to the material are disastrous. From those horrendous new sounds, to a quality that could have been so much better. And not to mention the special pack, which leaves much to be desired. They included a mediocre figure, with new paint ... for God's sake. As for supporting the franchise ... I fully understand what you mean. But it is also true that if the company makes releases lacking in quality, supporting those releases is a double-edged sword, it could make companies believe that we like those poor quality editions. It is a complex debate. In any case, in this particular case, it is useless to support a franchise that is already dead, as was clear with Robotech Academy. Neither companies nor fans are interested in Robotech. The general public does not know the franchise much less remember it. And the toy companies know that what really sells is Macross, not Robotech. Not for nothing all merchandising is% 99.9 oriented to Macross, they are not interested in what MOSPEADA or Southern Cross is. It sounds like a harsh thing, but it is the sad reality. Harmony Gold USA killed its own franchise.

Great review and presentation, but I have to apologize on the grain. It's a bit too much. Grain on this blu-ray release is due to poor digital encoding and "hiding" low resolution problems. Apparently, Funimation/Harmony Gold couldn't get their hands on the pristine prints of Macross when creating this Robotech release. It's a nice try but they could do far better, especially at the $45.99 price point. I think the smaller the TV someone watches this on the better. I'm watching this on a 75" 4K HDTV, which shows every single encoding problem. Though, I watch plenty of blu-ray titles on this TV and they look fantastic! The Robotech BD looks awful.

Word on the street is that this is a raw scan of print elements with no cleanup whatsoever, which is fine by me (we seventies and eighties kids love our grain) but not so copacetic for the modern anime generation, which I admittedly am not a part of. Having seen how shows like Sailor Moon and even Dragon Ball Z have had line art wiped out by DNR attempts to remove grain from traditional cel animation, I'll take that thick, rich grain over detail loss any day of the week, but it's definitely a divisive issue! Seems to be a 50/50 spit among fans.

You'll probably like it more than G1 Transformers. It's a very mature show along the lines of Batman the Animated series or Exo Squad. Definitely more mature than the classic 80s cartoons of transformers, gi Joe, and Voltron. I love all those shows too, but my all-time favorite cartoon is Robotech, hands down and possibly my favorite sci-fi franchise of all-time as well. Go ahead and watch this series, you won't be disappointed. Season 1 is taken from the Macross anime and is the best season. Season 2 was taken from Southern Cross, a different anime. it's ok, it's different but it's the worst season. Season 3 come from Genesis Climber Mospeada, a different anime. It's better than the Southern Cross season but not as good as season 1. Then there's the Robotech II movie, which was the first 3 or so episodes of a new season that would have followed an expeditionary force and followed Rick Hunter and Lisa Hayes, the main characters. The show only got 3 episodes because of the Japanese/US exchange rates going crazy in the 80s and made it too expensive to complete, which is a damn shame. That season would have been called the "Sentinels." The there's the 2007 movie Shadow Chronicles, which takes place basically at the same time as the end of season 3 or shortly after it. Anyway, Robotech is awesome and I'm sorry for writing a Russian novel about it. Watch it. You're welcome 👍😂

Robotech was created from three different Japanese anime series. Carl Macek connected the three individual stories into one narrative and labelled them "sagas" that span multiple generations. Die hard anime fans will criticize Robotech for this, but the truth is that it introduced true anime to millions of kids in the 1980s and was a big gateway in bringing Japanese animation to the United States. Robotech aired in syndication, so different markets had it on different channels at different times. Some channels didn't show it at all! Macross is generally accepted as being the best of the three sagas, but the others have things to enjoy as well, especially since they do continue the story.

We're talking about cartoons from the 80's and 90's that were made to be watched on old tube TVs. It's not going to be perfectly crisp and clear no matter what format you get. For the hardcore people I'm sure the minor differences jump out at them, but for the average person just looking to get ahold of a classic show in a current format this sounds like just the thing.

Anyone complaining about grain in this release has no understanding of, or respect for film. The grain is literally the detail, to want DNR is to want to destroy the detail, you people who want everything abnormally smooth on your high def TVs make me sick. What kills this set for me is the lack of the original audio mix, the new sound effects are wimpy and awful, and the levels are really inconsistent, with sounds either being too quiet, muffled or they're so blown out in the mix they drown out the music.
