Nice! If you dont mind me asking, what did you use to build the lifting mechanism to lift the cones?

How did you end up designing that cam system for picking up the cone?

This is awesome! I’m having some trouble understanding the grabber; if there’s flexible material (tpu?) around the cam and the cam rotates freely inside it to make it go outward, what’s securing the material?

  • @lskaling

Correct - The expanding portion is 3d printed tpu. The front has a relief cut to expand, and it's fastened with two screws on the back. Then there's a shaft that runs through it connected to the cam.

How does that spring work? how does it launch by itself, and is there a way to retract it?

Wow, this is such a nice build, and you explained everything really well. However, we are confused about the grabber. How does the grabber let go of the cone? How does the piece that grabs the cone come back in place? If you could let us know that would be great. Great video by the way!

Glad it helped! The grabber has a small flexible piece that slightly expands and contracts, depending on how the cam inside it is rotated. When the cam's major axis is opposed to the flexible piece, it puts pressure on the flexible piece, making it expand. When the servo rotates the cam so the major axis is aligned with the flexible piece, the material returns to its original shape which releases pressure. Hope that helps!

@@lskaling Thanks a lot for letting us know how the grabber works! It makes a lot more sense now! We thought of a similar concept(we posted it on our channel)and we now know how to improve it to make it better! Thanks for helping us!

I appreciate all the interest in the design. Unfortunately I don't plan on releasing the CAD files, out of interest of pedagogy I think it's in all team's best interest to try to design it themselves, and learn how to make it through that. Some advice I can offer is to get good with printing TPU (especially with a Bowden printer like I was using is challenging), and considering making reliefs where it flexes the most to reduce the force it takes to open. Also in my design the servo and linkage were aesthetically pleasing but unnecessary, the servo could directly drive the shaft for simplicity.

As for the shipping, you shouldn't need any other components to get a working prototype. The two non-printed parts were the servo and shaft. You can test spinning it by hand instead of a servo, and if you don't have any shafts you could theoretically print one, just print it lengthwise to improve it's torsional strength.
