Thank you for this heartfelt review. I will be turning 70 in October, and this film is not just for kids. Also, as someone who lived in New York at that time, “Robot Dreams” is an architecturally and geographically accurate depiction of New York in the 1980s. Throughout the movie the World Trade Center is seen in the distance. And this, I think, must be intentional as is the choice of “September” as a leitmotif throughout the film, foreshadowing what we will see as the story unfolds. Ultimately what this movie asks us is, what happens when you open your heart to someone and that someone is taken away from you? Is it possible in the face of unspeakable loss to find happiness again? “Robot Dreams” answers this in an exceedingly mature and nuanced and complex and compassionate way. I was an absolute wreck by the end of the film, and I'm still feeling all the feels days later. And I am so grateful for that.

Yes I love it! It makes me feel so many things. It’s in my top five favorite movies of the last year. It’s definitely my favorite animated film this year. The emotions, the humor, the animation and saying so much without a word left me feeling so much. I also love that they had their song and it doesn’t hurt that it’s one of my favorite songs.

It really is!

I came away from this feeling cold. The first 25 minutes are spectacular, and they should have stuck with that. It got super dark and that ending.. message was-- your best friends, who they are don't matter as long as their friends and are sentient? The middle section of the movie makes it pretty clear that dog is lonely, likely because he is not normal. He can't seem to make friends with anyone long term. And the weird thing with the lady leaving the country? What was the message there? That's some women are terrible and will ghost you out of the blue? I felt this would have worked as a short film, but at an hour and 45 minutes or so it went on way too long and the pacing was kind of all over the place.

I didn't get any of that from this movie. The ending to me is much simpler. Life is complex and circumstances change. People become different and adapt based on those changes. The ending is simply showing that despite the shift in both characters lives they were able to move on and be happy in their respective new situations. As far as the girl moving away they hadnt known each other for that long. Her career could have caused her to move and do something different. That's just the way life is sometimes. It deeply impacted me and I'm sorry you didn't feel the same!

@@natesfilmreviews i felt like robot did not need to hide. by hiding it felt like the message was- he moved on with a new best friend robot and that was okay that the old best friend could have reunited butr didnt. i see where youre coming from though. at the time, it felt kind of cold. i really thought i was going to love it but the depressing stuff in the middle w the robot and dog being bullied by numerous people took away from my enjoyment of that great 80s happy vibe we got from the first 25 mins. i wanted to see a movie w mostly that i guess. i did love the music and am baffled why the soundtrack is so hard to find in the US!

In my head canon they do reunite eventually but in that moment the robot was in the middle of a 180 processing the fact that life had moved on and wasn't ready to actually make eye contact. That they would reunite later in nostalgia rather than continuing what they had.

@@natesfilmreviews In the original comic, Duck flew to Florida for the Winter and said "See you next Spring." It wasn't as cold as the movie. Not sure why they chose to do it that way.
