The contrast between Alex Murphy and Clarence Boddicker facing an unwinnable situation is simply well done. Alex accepts his fate against five armed men and even telling Clarence he thinks he’s slime. Clarence is begging for his life ready to shit his pants. Only acts tough when he’s in control.

The song was the inspiration necessary for Peter to shoot the scene so magnifically. True to the 1980s era of action movies. Also, I like how in 03:49 Frankie (Allan Lee Graf) screams so much as he gets shot whereas the other crooks died almost "silently". Frankie's scream is practically the giveaway to the audience that he'll accidentally mow down his own boss, like if he implicitly says "Sal, I'm yelling because I don't like you anymore and wanna get rid of you". Though I can't understand how Frankie's right hand is blood-smeared in the next camera angle if he wasn't shot in his hand (or anywhere near it).

The movie takes on a whole new life when you realise the genius of Basil Poledouris' score and can hear how the two different themes of Robocop and Murphy interact. You noticed how Murphy's personality starts to shine through, but you should also listen carefully to how the woodwind section of the orchestra (which represents Murphy) gradually breaks through the brass section marching theme (representing the souless Robocop machine) and begins 'singing' over the top of everything else. By the end of the film, Murphy's theme (from before he becomes Roocop) takes over completely. It's meant to convey the concept of a bird (Murphy's soul) trapped in a metal cage, and eventually breaking free to take flight. It's one of the cleverest soundtracks ever created and enhances the movie immensely.

What I love about this scene is the way Murphy's persona is already shining through. He doesn't go for straight headshots against the employees, showing there is mercy there. However his subconscious hatred for Clarence comes right out and he just launches him vindictively through glass to subdue him as painfully, as drawn out, and as embrassingly as possible. Robo toys with him like a cat with a mouse just as Clarence did with Murphy. If he was all machine he would have shot everyone dead with headshots and then calmy arrested Clarence without hurting him. But what he actually does is kinda the opposite. I love this scene.

You know it's emotion driven but he doesn't give into personal feelings (yet) and upholds the law by not taking it into his own hands (yet). Also, did anyone ever think that this raid paved the way for Cain and the Nuke Cult to move in the second movie? Playing the new game just made me think about that today

the music was amazing but in the theatrical and home video release unfortunately they mixed the sound fx way over the music so you can't hear all that much of the music very well except the end of the gunfight. In the TV air version, they cut a lot of the shots out resulting in a shorter scene and also remixed the sound so the music (while also shorter) was much louder in relation to the sound effects. I personally wish they had balanced the music differently (stronger) here because they played the best part of the theme

It's been shown over and over again that practical effects feel more real than CGI. CGI is too neat, sterile, unbelievable whereas practical effects (models, squibs, blood packets) look more realistic, plus blank firing weapons show recoil and more realistic muzzle flashes. Now a lot of weapons firing are CGI, so the weapons have no recoil, muzzle flashes and trigger pulls arent synchronized, etc

  • @DarthVoxyn

1987’s “Robocop” was ultra violent yet ultra entertaining. A film that was literally years ahead of its time and that still holds up even now. I saw this movie like many did as a kid even though it was a hard rated R for its graphic violence, drug use, sexuality, and bad language. But, even with all of that, it was still marketed as a kid friendly movie back then. Lol The scene of the shooting death of officer Alex Murphy at the hands of the sadistically armed and dangerous criminal thugs who were led by the villainous Clarence Boddicker gave me chills when I first saw it back then and still does to this day thanks to its use of the good ol’ fashioned practical effects and fake blood instead of the use of CGI like the movies of today. But, because of the brutality of Murphy’s death, to me this scene was extremely gratifying to witness, especially to see how indestructible Robocop was and how effortlessly and systematically he vanquished each and every one of those criminals in this drug warehouse. One of the most epic gun fight scenes ever captured on film in my opinion. #Robocop1987 #PeterWeller #comequitelyortherewillbetrouble

When Robocop starts to batter down the door, notice the amount of time between his first few blows. He's only using his left arm because his gun is in his other hand, but he knows if he hits the door too hard, his fist will just punch right through. The first few blows are slower to measure the strength of the door to see how hard he can hit it without punching through it. Once he knows that, the blows start coming faster and faster so he can knock the door off its hinges.

It strikes me that the reason why this movie has aged so well is because its production and costume design is timeless. It doesn't pander to fads or styles. It is, for the most part, functional. People wear suits, body armour, plain shirts, army jackets, things that people had worn for decades even in 1987 and continue to do today. There's little reliance on "future technology" as a deus ex machina for narrative problems. Its anti-capitalist satire is a message that rings true even today, unlike the "enemies du jour" of many an action film back in the day (the Soviets, the Vietnamese, the Arabs, the Chinese).
