I started crying profusely. That's scene evokes so much emotion especially if you are someone who has been through a lot in their childhood. Even though Robin's character was there to help Matt's, by the end of the film you found out they both healed each other in some of the same ways.

This is the difference between a true artist secure in his place in the world. All the other roles before this allowed him the freedom to do this, although I have a feeling that if this role would have been presented earlier in his career he would have done the same thing. You hear about an action star who has a manager who dictates how many times the actor can be hit in a movie and if he is allowed to lose a fight ...all in order to protect the actor's image. At that point, you're not an artist but a working stiff with a shelf life. A highly paid working stiff. (And nothing wrong with treating your career as a business especially if you are the product ...but I would think one is more satisfying. Of course who am I? A working stiff lol).

If i had to choose between Jesus and Robin, I would still go with Robin. Jesus only had 12 followers and rarely made people smile. Robin made every man and woman feel better and shine brighter at the same time. Nice try 'Jesus'.

Nearly 7 years later since his unfortunate death, I still miss the man. His humor, his films, and his presence. The world's been a darker place without him shining light on troubled times. Rest in peace, Robin!

Such a sad loss. I don't idolize celebrities normally, but Robin Williams and Phil Hartman really spoke to me as a child. I used to get my parents to rent Robin's standup in the 80s several times a year because I was just in awe of his mind and the speed at which he delivered his gift.

I’m so happy Robin got the Oscar for this role. He deserved it for many of his performances.

Many people don't realize he was a Julliard graduate - a talented dramatic actor who just loved doing comedy, improv, and standup! He was such a big part of my youth, I still get teared up watching interviews like this...

Whenever I'm sad for the loss of Robin, I try and focus on the fact I've been blessed to have existed on earth at the same time as him. There are so many great people in history I'd love to have experienced while they were alive... He was an extraordinary lump of stardust... ❤

The generosity of Robin Williams. He foregoes his pay scale to make this movie, and changed the trajectory of Messrs. Damon and Affleck forever. Introduced Mr. Damon to Steven Spielberg, and here comes Saving Private Ryan. His loss, unlike other celebrities, was a personal blow. In his improv, he made me laugh nonstop. In movies, his poignant scenes moved me to tears. There has never been another like him. I'm fortunate to have lived and experienced the comedic and acting genius of this time. Man, I miss him.

Matt and Ben created a wonderful script. Robin saw the potential and his amazing performance added incredible depth to the final story.

I can't even remember who was the lead protagonist in "Robots". I only remember Robin Williams, Jennifer Coolidge, and the guy who played Nemo's father in Finding Nemo.

He stole most of his comedy routine, but if you mean comedic actor, you could find worse. Take for instance Jumanji or Hook, very funny in both. Going to the comedy store coked out of his mind and "channeling" Pryor, not very funny at all.

Matt Damon is so whip-smart. Even at such a young age, he redirected the interviewer away from his friendship with Ben Affleck and back to himself and Robin Williams- incredibly focused. He changed the whole tone and pulled it away from rumor. And, Robin Williams? What an incredible human being and a comic genius. SO quick and intuitive. This is a great snapshot of both actors.

I can totally see Matt Damon writing that movie script. What I don't get is Ben Affleck co-writing it. There is nothing articulate about Affleck and he just doesn't seem to have it in him. Maybe it was a collaboration of Ben giving ideas that helped Matt, but it's always made me wonder.

@@saintejeannedarc9460 Perhaps they were both substantial contributors in different ways? Not necessarily exactly equal talents, but neither one greater or less than the other - perhaps their contributions were necessarily complementary. The script needed that articulation you refer to, but it certainly needed something else - and certainly something *different* from that as well. We weren't in the room for those years during which they developed the script - whatever was the recipe, I imagine that it absolutely *needed* the different ingredients that they both brought. (Also, I wouldn't assume that we can be certain - from our limited view of him in roles and interviews and so on - that we know how intelligent and/or articulate Ben is, especially when working in the context of his relationship with Matt.)

For me, “ Good Will hunting “ is one of the BEST, powerful, touching and educational movie out there. The day I heard about Robin’s death, I was weeping like a baby and depressed for days. Where ever you are, you’re always in our heart and deeply missed by billions! RIP

How articulate and insightful Robins answers are. What a gift to have had him in our lives.

As much as I love/loved Robin Williams' comedic craziness on talk shows, it's so great hearing him talk authentically about stuff like he does here.

I will always remember this movie, and it hit me when I was 14 and had not told my parent about the sexual abuse I had experienced and why I had been hiding it; it made me face it and I was able to begin to process it and accept it after I watched it 😢💯 This movie means a lot to me and always will 😎

Dude... when Robin is talking about his thoughts on the roll and why he took it and what he liked about it... man.... I absolutely loved his serious and thoughtful side. ❤️

This is such a time capsule! I love Matt saying how he is in some Spielberg movie he thinks will be pretty good called "Saving Private Ryan." Also, that he is going to be in Kevin Smiths next movie, "Dogma," and some movie called "Rounders." And, that one he is going to get to third is "The Talented Mr. Ripley." It was all so still in the future then.

Robin Williams made this movie. It wouldn’t have been a success without him. He is the only actor I have ever cried when I heard that he had passed away. No other actor has held a place in my heart like he did.

I just stumbled across this clip. I had never seen a in depth interview with Robin before. Just clips on various late night talk shows where he was usually playing the jokester. This shows an entirely different side of Williams that I never knew existed. I'm so glad to have seen this interview to see the depth and perspective that Robin had about life and about himself as an artist. What a wonderful interview.

I miss Robin. He made my life better and i never even met him...

Robin Williams' mind moved at the speed of light. We're still trying to catch up.

My high school Film Analysis class is doing a Robin Williams Unit. Good Will Hunting, The Birdcage, and Dead Poet's Society. So perhaps some young people will.

Ingeniously written, acted and directed movie. A rare gem in life. Matt and Ben are super talents!

It still blows my mind the true depth of Robin's acting range. Anything from characters that could bring you to tears one minute then laughing hysterically the next to characters that you hated but appreciated because his acting was so damn good! One of the most gifted comedians, actors and humanitarians to ever walk the face of the earth.

Still Breaks my heart every time I see Robin Williams face. Without a doubt one of the most gifted entertainers ever to grace the screen. Good Will Hunting is my all time favorite movie. Everyone in that film was amazing , especially Matt Damon and Robin Williams. I use his line at the end of the movie all the time "Sonofabitch, he stole my line".

Wow! Seeing Robin Williams being serious gets me kinda emotional. I wish he did this more often, instead of being the clown all the time. Don't get me wrong, I love his humor and comedy. But when he's not using humor all the time, he feels more genuine. He's got such a great mind with so much depth. I miss him.

I wish these two had been able to do more movies together. There is a genuine respect and chemistry.

They were making Armageddon and Saving Private Ryan around this time.

The way Robin explains why he has been a part of the movie and Matt has that look in his eye...This is why you believe in what you do. This is why you build something in life. Believe in your self and your goals.

I've watched Good Will Hunting maybe 15-20x over the years...it's among my all-time faves for a number of reasons. But I also loved Robin Williams in What Dreams May Come - and felt that may have been his finest performance. It was also the first time I really saw a sadness in his eyes that seemed to go beyond just an on-screen character...it was in his soul. The depth of this man is enormous - his talent, his wit, his charm, his humanity...his intelligence. People of his calibre don't come along very often. We lost a great human being when he passed. Not to take away from Matt, who wrote an incredible story and saw it through to fruition with the movie. It was great seeing the two of them on Charlie's show, adding more layers and dimensions to their characters - and props to Charlie for being so engaging with them both.

Sigh. I adore Robin Williams. This was one of my favorite performances by him. His comedy is legendary but he was clearly so much more than a brilliant comedian. There was always so much depth in his beautiful blue eyes as well. One of the best movies ever made as well. Matt is also a favorite actor of mine. Love you always Robin.

I first felt that with Patch Adam's he could make you feel things. Robin was my first ever movie bought for me as a kid a VHS bought from overseas in "Flubber" which was just him having a good time with a piece of goo.

I LOVE these interviews where they get to end their sentences, talk about the process, depth of things and most importance no laughing and clapping after each word.

Robin was a memorable human being. I'm so glad we have these pieces of his soul preserved on film. I'm so glad he was here. My children will know him and I hope everyone shares his films and keeps his memory alive always. Thank you Robin! "Oh Captain,my Captain!"

This is the first time I've ever seen Robin Williams not riff during an interview. His respect for Matt and Ben, for the movie itself is great - and it shows here. This is one of the greatest interviews Robin did.

Brit here - damn I wish we had more people like Charlie Rose. Sure, we have some fun hosts over here, but a host who apologises for an interruption and lets the guest finish.....thats someone who cares about the chat, and not their own ego. They care about the flow. Such a great interview, and one of my favourite films.

Robin is easily one of the best actors that ever lived. I always hear about Deniro and Pacino who basically don't have the range Robin had as an actor. I always preferred him in serious roles because he could convey pain and emotion so effortlessly. He is definitely missed!

This was such good time for cinema, TV and culture. Hard to imagine such conversation about a blockbuster today.

I too miss Robin Williams so very much for the wonderful films he gave us & so much more.

Robin Williams was a national treasure from the first time he set foot in front of an audience until this very minute...and thanks to having so many hours on film and tape, he always will be until the end of time. I miss him as we all miss him...what a fantastic ride. Thank you, Robin.

This is such a wonderful interview, with all three offering such candor and gratitude to one another. Damon seems so earnest and heartfelt in his responses, expressing gratitude, not arrogance for his success. Williams is also quite forthcoming, sharing the appeal of acting and stand-up, both satisfying, but in different ways. Rose is also on point, showing his talent for in-depth interviews. Still, the whole scene is so bittersweet, knowing today what life would bring for two the participants...so much loss...

Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era-the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run . . . but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant. . . . History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of “history” it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time-and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened. My central memory of that time seems to hang on one or five or maybe forty nights-or very early mornings-when I left the Fillmore half-crazy and, instead of going home, aimed the big 650 Lightning across the Bay Bridge at a hundred miles an hour wearing L. L. Bean shorts and a Butte sheepherder's jacket . . . booming through the Treasure Island tunnel at the lights of Oakland and Berkeley and Richmond, not quite sure which turn-off to take when I got to the other end (always stalling at the toll-gate, too twisted to find neutral while I fumbled for change) . . . but being absolutely certain that no matter which way I went I would come to a place where people were just as high and wild as I was: No doubt at all about that. . . . There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. . . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . . And that, I think, was the handle-that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting-on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . . So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark-that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

I love that the interviewer is having a hoot of a time in between asking genuine interview questions. It's like he's powerless to stop Robin from exposing his inner child. I bet Robin could start a enigmatic game of 'the floor is lava' at any moment and he'd happily join in.

I had a dream about Robin Williams last night and it led me here. Such a warm, human presence. I miss him dearly.

Awakenings and Good Will Hunting were so powerful. They were two of my favorite movies.

Williams is one of a kind. There will NEVER be another man like him. The most diverse artist of all time.

Even insomnia? The worst 2 hours I've ever spent in a movie theatre

Such an amazing actor and person Robin was. He will truly be missed and lives always in our hearts.

A timeless perfect movie. Script /talent and film rarely align this perfect. Kudos. Damn shame we need a film like this in 2021.

Lived near Robin. Passed him on the bike a few times. I had just walked out of a meeting with a large client in the Bay Area, walked to the parking lot, got in the car and flipped through some news on my phone. Saw he had passed and cried for a good 15 minutes. Every time I see him I remember why his death moved me so much.

Rose is such a terrific interviewer. He is prepared, and does not step on the the guests; both Matt and Robin. Matt is humble, throughout. Wish Ben were there as well.

Robin Williams. What a man he was. What a gift.

Robin Williams made Good Will Hunting an awesome movie. Matt Damon and everyone else, and the script were great. Robin Williams simply brought it up to a higher level.

There are certain people who will always be greatly missed. Robin Williams is one of those. Brilliant.

I dont often see a movie i will watch more than once. Many movies i have walked away from,leaving it in the background as i do other things. BUT this movie i was mesmerized from the beginning. I have watched it dozens of times. Everytime i walk away, I find something different as i have been changed as life has brought hurdles. Today, i miss the acting ability of Mr.Williams RIP...

What an outstanding interview! Robin Williams was an amazing actor who is missed by so many! I mourn the loss every time I see one of his movies, shows or interviews! May he RIP!

Agreed.. There will never be another Robin Williams..the soul searching aspect of this movie is ironic given Robin's own struggles...RIP RW...thank you...

In all the years that we have revered Robin Williams as we sucked up his genius and talent like water in the middle of the desert, how heartbreaking that we never realized that he needed US more than we needed him. If only we could have saved him… 😢

I recall realizing how really small I was when I went on my first holiday outside England and considered the distance I had travelled relative to my personal impact as a human being. Watching this interview once again reminds me how creatively and intellectually insignificant I have been and continue to be. The genius of Matt Damon’s writing and acting and shear genius of the late, great Robin Williams.

Wow watching this i didnt realise how much I missed Robin. such a HUGE part of my life from all his films and special, never met him, spoke to him or looked upon him but somehow has had a profound effect on my life that causes feeling of loss and sheer joy when I think about him,,,now thats a person the world needs more of

Wow. Don’t know how this showed up on my recommendations, but I’m so glad it did. Matt Damon may have played a genius in Good Will Hunting, but he is a genius in real life. Someone so young, creating such a beautiful script, genius.

With the exception of Mrs. Doubfire, which was really funny, I never really considered Williams a brilliant comedian. He certainly did not make me laugh much. But I was blown away by his dramatic roles in The awakening, Dead poets society and Good Will Hunting. Humanity. Intelligence. Tolerance. Freedom. Individuality. Honesty. Bravery. Those were traits, priorities and values I embraced from an early age. Rest in peace!

I agree with you...he has a very unique personality/comedy style that not everyone finds funny..he has his moments tho I think. But brilliant actor

Agree, and I have the same thing with Steve Carell, not funny to me but loved him in a serious role in The Big Short. I suspect I simply don't like over-acting comedians, like Carell, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams etc. Loved Robin in Awakenings and Good Will Hunting.

Robin Williams was truly a national treasure!

Probably the best interview with movie stars I've seen to date. Interesting how Matt dodges the question "Where does will come from" and deflects it to talk about his parents. At one point he puts his hand below his lip to muffle his talk. And Robin, who managed to hide his pain from the world so successfully until his death, smiling at him with a "I know where it's coming from". Good Will Hunting replayed in the interview.

Absolutely amazing. These 2 are such genuine individuals. Missing Robin, and it’s becoming such a joy to watch Matt Damon thrive. Great conversation!

Robin took a paycut and got his first oscars reward, it tells all why good filmmaking is worth it.

I wish his family, and all the people that feel about the same as I do, infinite love. Thank you Robin. Thank you to his family. And in this interview, I would wish to be Matt Damon…. People just gravitated towards Robin. He really gave off that awesome energy that not a lot of people can do. Always the interesting person to follow. Rest In Peace

I love how RW is insane and maniacal when he's "on" but so calm and sweet when he's "himself. And the Mystery Science Theater 3000 send up for the Oscars was BRILLIANT.

Robin Willams To me, is, the best we will ever have . We will never have another like him . One of a kind.,comedian, actor. A legend.... . . We will for ever miss him....RIP. Sir💐💙

I was so amazed that Robin was so quick of mind. What he was able to adlib in minutes would take the average guy hours or maybe days! My favorite Robin moment is Robin and Jonathan Winters on the Johnny Carson show.

Robin's characters were always amazing and so remarkable and so memorable . So iconic. Robin is gone but not forgotten. Such wonderful talent. Missed so much.

2 great actors at that table. Good Will Hunting is a movie I can watch over and over. If you ever really listen to stars, so many of them had their own problems, many seem to have had broken homes, suffered abuse, etc…then they make it big at some point in Hollywood, and their always chasing something better…so many become alcoholics, drug addicts, end up marrying several different people or living with different ones, overdosing…and in the public eye, we love so many of them as actors and not really knowing anything about the real person. This is one of the few serious Robin Williams interviews I’ve seen. In all the others, he had to be humorous the whole interview bc he struggles to have deep conversations. Imagine having all of their money and wealth, yet many of them are still searching for something to make them happier or to feel a little bit better about themselves…and then we read Robin dealt with heavy depression and other issues. What a sad loss for the acting world when Robin Williams died. I think I remember from something that I read that he was an only child, always doing things on his own and having imaginary friends…so very sad. He was great in this movie, and the climax of this movie they are discussing is pure perfection!

This one of the best interviews I've ever watched - and I was born in the Cretaceous.

Since most of the comments are about expressing admiration towards Robin Williams and who could blame those ppl, I love Matt Damon. The kid is so well grounded from I hear that I can only admire him and wish him all the best. As for Robin, miss him terribly. Nuff said.

I didn't know that matt and Ben had written this story. They should wrote more! It was really really good. Very real, intelligent and inciteful I think. Thanks for it. And robin did you proud playing that role. I'm pleased he enjoyed it.

Read a bit into it its actually a very great story They didnt write the psychiatrist too strict, so if lets say, Denzel accepted it, they could tap into tje racial problems and natures of this story, if a female lead accepted it they coukd explore some other dynamics and etc. Also, they wrote in a very random blowjob scene into it to see if the guys they sent their scripts to actually read them or just shut them down without even checking it out, and turns out only a couple of people actually asked them about that

hi folks, I have loved this movie for decades.Ever since I had it on VHS. It must have been one of first movies that just hit me. Great acting. Great script. Beautiful subtleties. Wise words. It was great to enjoy this mature interview with a fantastic exchange of ideas and truth without distraction. Thank you for sharing. Matt Damon had visited Ireland recently. I wish I had bumped into him ! as for Robin. Robin is the reason you should get to know people quicker. Because you never know how long you have left with them. God Bless.

Honestly! It was so weird to hear him say “oh I got a new movie coming out by Spielberg called Saving Private Ryan. I think it’s gonna be very good” lol

I could watch this forever; for Robin obviously but also the way Matt looks at him. Just beautiful.

Charlie Rose treated his guests with respect and admiration. I appreciated his thoughtful questions, too.
