Grace's sheriff, to my knowledge, is the only one who actually gets the better of Robin Hood on more than one occasion and even kills the rebel. He portrays the sheriff as cunning and educated and not brainless like so many who play the role.

Nicholas Grace was an extremely underated character actor. His portrayal of Anthony Blanche in Brideshead Revisited was singularly brilliant and magnificently memorable. His Sheriff of Nottingham in the wonderfully Ethereal 'Robin of Sherwood' took this sublime series to another level.

Ray Winstone (Will Scarlett) made it to Hollywood. It is beyond me why Nickolas Grace did not made it to there. He can easily act so convincingly like Christopher Waltz as a character actor. This TV serie would not have been such a success without Mr.Grace as The Sheriff and Clannad with their music.

Philip Marc, the real Sheriff of Nottingham in King John's time, was every bit as clever, nasty and ruthless as the one portrayed by Nicholas Grace. He ran a huge swathe of the north Midlands and did it extremely effectively, so effectively that everybody hated him and come Magna Carta he was specifically named as one of those to be thrown out of England, along with his brothers. He was trusted by John for his personal loyalty and his ability to keep his part of the kingdom safe for John, especially when Louis invaded England with a huge French army. Oh, and for his efficiency in collecting taxes :) Nottingham Castle housed some important prisoners. Being built atop Castle Rock, that rocky outcrop was a maze of tunnels and underground chambers, ideal for holding large numbers of people. The Sheriff almost certainly extorted payments from those who could afford it for luxuries like clean straw, edible food, water (or ale,) and candles or rush torches. If Robin had been thrown into that prison it is unlikely he would have escaped without inside help.

Here goes nothing... I think Keith Allen's sheriff in BBC's series is the best I've seen. He's got character, he doesn't overplay it, his constant teeth grinding, swearing, yelling... "la-de-dah-de-dah"... Keith Allen's sheriff is probably the closest to this one, except... slightly madder. I like this one "My lord, I must protest. - I'd rather you didn't" lolol ... but I guess it's a matter of opinion.

You have to admit that we have at least the opportunity to launch a lawsuit against our politicians or the police force etc. It needs a lot of time but the tribunals of Guantanamo have been declared to be illegal by the US supreme court. I don't think that evil is the right term. They're corrupt, or powerless, or lost the grip. The most people will be consumed by the system sooner or later.
