@@Lone-wolf-1982It's kind of more than just a parody of Robin Hood in general; it uses most of the plot of this movie as its own. It feels like Brooks kind of remade it in the style of old Robin Hood movies, like the one starring Errol Flynn, while "Prince of Thieves" tried to be a throwback to old swashbucklers like this while giving it a more contemporary feel (less clean and glamorous costumes, more Hollywood style dialogue, etc)

Sean Connery did indeed "pop in." They wanted him to have a larger role, but they could only get him for 2 days of filming. Kevin Costner did try an English accent, but according to the director, it was so bad he was like "Yeah, don't bother."

I don't know if I hallucinated it in a drunken stupor or just wished it were so, but I really thought there is B roll of him trying his sweet Mickey Mouse heart out online somewhere, I'm sure ninja lawyers nuked it somewhere. But yeah I remember reading eventually even Costner said along the paraphrased lines of "yeah at this point I'm ruining the emotion of the act so I'm just gonna do it," and it's why "The Beggar Hood" has the......... "traditional.....?" accent in his scenes? (Kinda tickles me that the only scenes he's allowed to pretend to be British is when the character IN THE STORY has to stink. That was *NOT* an accident, lol Lord I loved this movie so much, so much growing up)

Reportedly, Costner wanted to do an English accent but the director refused because he couldn't pull one off convincingly. So throughout the movie anytime Costner became annoyed with the director, he'd start acting in accent. So anytime you hear Robin talk in something approaching an accent, Costner was angy. Also, it gave Cary Elwes the ability to say the killer line, "Unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent!"

The earliest recorded Robin Hood stories come from the early 15th century, but there's earlier references to the character dating to the 14th century. Whether or not he was a real person is something historians really have no clue about. In the earlier stories, Robin was not a nobleman, and the king was Edward, not John. The story was retconned in the 18th century as he became more popular among the aristocracy and they started producing stories which made him a bit more relatable to them. The stories also became more political making Robin Hood into a resistance figure whereas in the earlier stories he was just a bandit.

No.2 movie of 1991 and one of RH's great cinematic interations. Major shout-out for reacting to the extended cut (further plot/character pieces). This was Kevin Costner's next film after acclaim and awards including 7 Oscars for "Dances with Wolves" (1990). Great supporting cast at becoming the characters that are Robin's allies and enemies. Every piece of the film is as epic as it should. The film's song by Bryan Adams, "Everything I Do, I Do it For You" is among the greatest movie songs ever. A month before Prince of Thieves, there was another Robin Hood in the same year. An all British production, starred Patrick Bergin as Robin, Uma Thurman as Marian and directed by John Irvin. It went to television here in the U.S. while it was in theaters internationally (somewhat successful). Not only are their several films, But also several books and tv series of "The Hood". Before and after "Prince of Thieves", more historians have been studying more than the folk tale itself. That maybe he (Robertus Hood) and his exploits were real. The late Sean Connery's cameo in RH:PofT as King Richard, short but sweet. Much like 'Diamonds are Forever', his salary went to charity. He played an older Robin Hood in another classic, "Robin and Marian" (1976). The director of RH:P of T, Kevin Reynolds and Costner teamed up again for another masterpiece, "Waterworld" (1995).

Great Reaction as always, Jenn. Some facts from this movie. Alan Rickman turned down the role of the Sheriff twice before he was told he could more or less have carte blanche with his interpretation of the character. Cary Elwes (Robin Hood Men In Tights, The Princess Bride) was offered the role of Robin Hood, but turned it down because he thought the plot was too contrived. During an interview given on British television. Alan Rickman revealed that he had broken "about ten swords" in the sword fighting scene with Kevin Costner.

Alan Rickman literally stole the show - all the most hilarious and memorable lines “cancel Christmas… with a spoon… and bring a friend” are his. He did not like his role in this very much so he “rewrote” his lines with the help of some comedian friends and man did it wrk. He was a master actor - I mean… as terrible as the Sheriff is when Mortiana tells him she is his mother… the total devastation in his face and eyes… somehow you actually feel sorry for him.

I'm an Englishman and I couldn't give a toss about the American accents or the geographical inaccuracies in order to facilitate the beauty of Britain. Unfortunately some stupid vandal recently cut down the sycamore gap tree featured in the movie. This is the best robin hood movie ever put to screen. Sean Connery as King Richard, what a masterstroke of casting and concealing it from the opening credits. The additions of Azeem and Duncan add so much heart to the story. The score by Michael Kaimen is sublime. Excalibur (1981) is the best Arthurian legend put to screen. The three musketeers 1973 and it's 1974 sequel the four musketeers is still the best version of those tales.

I am not one for magical or mystical thinking for the most part, but there are places on earth that soak up an collective energy from all the history of the people the location impacts. A harmony of feeling, if being apart of something higher and more than yourself, and to the generations before you and letting it remain for the next. These right bastards stole all of that in one profane act they won’t be healed for some time and as you say, it won’t be exactly the same way or as much, but as near as one can make it. Kind of funny he lands at Dover then walks to Sycamore Gap which is 400 miles away! Would'nt he have to walk past Nottingham to get there? 😄 Handrian's wall was'nt built to keep the Scots in, it was to keep them out! 😉 In truth Hadrians wall has nothing to do with the Scots it was built by the Romans when they occupied Southern Britain to keep the Barbarians (Picts and other tribes) out. The Scots would not arrive until after the Romans left hundreds of years later the Scots would invade from Ireland to conquer and colonize the land. Although i imagine it came in handy later. 😉 God Bless.

This was the first movie I ever went back to watch a second time in the theater. There are so many great characters and iconic scenes (staff fight on the river, witch doing really gross prophesizing, the Maid Marian reveal, etc.), but come on... If we're being honest, Alan Rickman absolutely steals the show. The line when he's asked why he'd use a spoon and not an axe to cut out Robin Hood's heart and replies, "because it's dull, you twit; it'll hurt more" is one of the most memorable movie lines from my childhood. Alan Rickman has had so many iconic lines over the course of his career, but that's the one that go me. He was so evil in this, but was so entertaining doing it.

One of Robin's men who apprehended Marion and her maidservant was played by Jack Wild. Older people may remember him from the movie Olver, in which he played the Artful Dodger. And shortly thereafter, he starred in the children's television show H.R. Puf'n'Stuf.

    - Connery was approached because Costner suggested it. Connery and Costner's film The Untouchables won Connery an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Also, Connery and Slater did a film called The Name of the Rose. Finally, Connery played Robin Hood as well in a film called Robin and Marian in the 1970s, with both characters aging remnants of their former selves. Marian was played by Audrey Hepburn in that film. He was paid $250K provided that his cameo was uncredited, and he donated the funds. - The character called Much, one of the Merry Men, was played by an actor named Jack Wild. By the time he made the film, he had had a very hard life of alcoholism and an inability to escape the one role he was known for. In the Academy Award-winning Best Picture "Oliver!", Jack Wild portrayed The Artful Dodger, nabbing an Oscar-nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He never escaped the role, and some of the crap that came with being a child actor of the time. he had finally become sober by the time he did Robin Hood. - The sword Azeem carries is a Scimitar, sometimes referred to as a Saracen sword. - Robin's father is one of the best English character actors ever...Brian Blessed. A well-known Shakespearean actor as well as a musical theater actor (he originated the role of Old Deuteronomy in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats), Blessed is perhaps best known for a film you have not yet done...the 1980 sci-fi camp classic Flash Gordon, as Prince Vultan of the Hawkmen. I think that you would get a big kick out of it, especially since its fun, and is the only other film with a score by Queen! He's also done several of Kenneth Branagh's films, and was Emperor Augustus Caesar in the legendary BBC drama I, Claudius in the 1970s (without his superb beard). - Nick Brimble (Little John) did another well loved film set in the Middle Ages. In A Knight's Tale, he plays Sir Ector, the knight that Heath Ledger's William Thatcher squires for. - Michael Wincott (Guy of Gisbourne) excelled as villains in the 1990s: The Crow (he played Top Dollar, the main villain) and The Three Musketeers (playing Rochefort) were two of his biggest hits. But the one role I loved him in was as record producer Paul Rothchild in Oliver Stone's The Doors, about the legendary rock band. Rothchild produced most of The Doors albums except their final one, L.A. Woman., and was a music legend.

Great reaction Jen like always, love this movie. Robin Hood didn't rob from the rich and give to the poor, he robbed from the corrupt government and gave it back to the people who were unjustly taxed. A small distinction, but one that changes the entire narrative. Morgan Freeman's character in this film was based on a character who was developed in a (fantastic) British TV show called Robin of Sherwood. The creators of Prince of Thieves thought that this was part of the original legend and added it to their adaptation. In Robin of Sherwood, the character was originally not going to be a recurring character, but audiences responded so positively to him that he was part of it throughout the show's run. And The Sycamore Gap tree or Robin Hood tree, that famous tree is featuring in a that scene in this movie where Robin is shouting "Azeem the great one i am home" That tree won the 2016 England Tree of the Year award. It was felled in the early morning of 28 September 2023 in what Northumbria Police described as "an act of vandalism". The felling of the tree led to an outpouring of anger and sadness. Love the cameo of Sean Connery. Keep up the good work.
