There was something in the suitcase originally, but Tarantino and Roger Avary realized whatever they put in there wouldn’t live up to anybodys expectations. The suitcase idea is stolen from a Robert Aldrich movie, Kiss Me Deadly, and I think the glowing light represents the atomic bomb in that film, I thought it was supposed to be Pandora’s box in that movie.

I can't believe this movie is almost 30 years old. An instant classic. IMO this is the quintessential Tarantino film. Every part about it is incredible.
I remember the 1st time seeing this, it was like a new color was invented. So wild, stylish, fresh and unpredictable. What the hell did I just see?
Hey Jen, You totaly picked up on one of the many themes in "Pulp Fiction", in which each person is the protagonist in their own story. -------- So when each story is happening the story comes from their point of view. Which allows for villians to be pitted against each other. ------- When Jules is in the room speaking to Brad, it's from his point of view. Or When Butch has to go back for the watch and saves Marcellus it's from his point of view. ------- Although the characters and storylines are interconnection, it all depends on the lens though which it is viewed. --------- Which makes you root for one person over the other based on the lens which it's viewed. Simply brilliant writing.

One of the (many) interesting themes in this movie is the relativity of good and evil. In each vignette, the hero of the story changes along with the point of view, but also think about who's the good guy and who's the bad guy in each scene, and it flips around depending upon the situation. And this switching is reflected in the seemingly random conversations, many of which really debate whether things have intrinsic value -- why the name of the Quarter Pounder changes under the metric system, is a foot rub the same as sex, why do we love dogs but not pigs when both are equally dirty, etc. etc.

Bad Tarantino imitators write stories with scenes out of order just to be edgy. But this movie did it for a reason: Tarantino wanted the audience to know that Travolta dies before he actually does, that way the final conversation with Jules in the diner about redemption, miracles, fate, messages from God, and walking the earth, carries so much more weight when you know that Samuel L. Jackson walks away but Travolta doesn't.

My friend had the soundtrack on cassette, we listened to it so much, I hadn't even seen the movie at the time, I was on 5th grade.
No one writes dialogue like Quentin Tarantino. Every conversation from Hans Landa's interogation and subtly implied threats against Perrier LaPadite to Jules and Vincent talking about if a dog is a flithy animal is magnificent to hear. He makes every conversation feel believable and genuine and directs actor perfectly. There is never this perfectly snappy "MCU style" banter or clichéd monologues, almost no one delivers there lines perfectly in rapid succession because that is not how a real conversation goes. He makes every conversation seem like its a genuine discussion between two actual people with differing opinions or worldviews. Every Tarantino movie is worth to checkout, my favorite being Resevoir Dogs, which i would highly recommend!

True. My only complaint is that in his earlier movies many of the characters sound the same or have the same "voice"/"talk the same", but in later movies this has been fixed and everyone has their own voice or character. I think it is because in earlier movies so many of the characters were gangsters.

"This watch has seen some shit" I need you to drop this on merch Jen , that was classic timing🤣
Tarantino has a knack of knowing exactly what song should be used. And I mean exactly. A lot of songs got so much renewed popularity whenever he used them
I saw this in the movie theater in 1994. I remember standing up after it was over, looking at my friend, and telling him, "that was the wildest flick I've ever seen."
Awe Jen, during the bible verse scene at the beginning of the movie. To see you flinch when Sam Jackson points the gun, eats the burger and tosses the tv stand for saying "WHAT" was priceless. ------- It showed you're so real and immersed in the movie. Despite the fact that it's only a movie you still empathize with the characters to the point that you flinch when they flinch, you grimace when they grimace. -----You basically place yourself in the minds of the character. ------ Which is what makes your reactions so great. ----- I knew you would love this movie. Keep em coming.
This is a classic! Saw it in the theatre, and was blown away. The dialogue. Interweaving, non-linear story- very unique at the time!!
I’ll never forget seeing this new in the theater, because I had just come home from traveling in Europe and the Middle East and a girl I was madly in love with invited me to go see it. We both loved it!
The rumor is that it was Marsellus's soul in the briefcase. That's why it glows the way it does.
"This watch has seen some shit" Haha, how prophetic! Great choice Jen. Such a classic. Introduced the world to Tarantino. I'd love to see two of his other films Jacky Brown and True Romance (written by QT). Both wonderful.
I'm so happy you liked this one! It's so un-James Bond lol! I highly recommend "Kill Bill" for sure.

Directed by Tony Scott (rip)
Random first thing to mention -- Ricky Nelson was the son of Ozzie Nelson, and he, Ozzie, his mom and his brother were the focus of "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet", a sitcom in the 50's. He also was a 50's/60's rock and roll singer who fathered Matt and Gunnar Nelson, aka "Nelson", a hair metal band which like a few of them towards the end, really wasn't; but they DID have long hair. The songs they're known for are "Love and Affection", "After the Rain", and, as Power Tool on the Bill and Ted soundtrack, "Two Heads are Better than One". And as a wrestling fan I know that for some reason Chris Jericho kept trying to rock the Gunnar Nelson look until five years after anyone remembered them. Totally random.
Tarantino movies have his signature vibe, regardless of the genre. He usually works with the same group of actors over and over. He's written roles specifically for Uma Thurman. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of music. He has impeccable instinct for picking just the right tune for the right moment. Check out interviews where he's talking about music. He's a fascinating guy.
The theory of what was in the case, from my understanding, was that it was Marcellus's soul. When you first see Marsalis he has a bandage on the back side of his head where his soul is taken from.
@PorterJustPorter

Nah, it's Marsalis Wallace's breakfast; an Egg McGuffin.
@Dylan_Platt

That's one popular theory. I've never given it much credence, mostly because if Vincent and Jules are otherworldly beings who commonly handle tangible souls, then Jules' moment of clarity and Vincent's dismissal of its spiritual legitimacy at the end don't make much sense. Other theories include the case containing some kind of gold, possibly an Academy Award, or jewels, possibly the diamonds that were stolen in the Reservoir Dogs heist. Co-writer Roger Avery has stated that early versions of the script explicitly showed the case to contain diamonds, but that he and Tarantino thought that was "too boring and predictable". No matter what it "really" has inside, though, it was probably *mostly* just a visual reference to one of Tarantino's favorite noirs, "Kiss Me Deadly" from 1955, which also has a case with glowing contents at the center of the plot.
Great reaction as usual Jen. As a child, Butch was told "Hopefully, you'll never have to experience this yourself, but when two men are in a situation like me and your Daddy were, for as long as we were, you take on certain responsibilities of the other." Butch went back for Marsellus because of the lesson of The Gold Watch.
"This watch has seen some shit." LOL, LITERALLY!!!!🤣😂🤣😂
This is a great movie. Uma Thurman's performance is one of her best. Quentin Tarantino movies are action packed. This is a favorite of mine.
I enjoyed ur reaction! This is the best Tarantino movie imo. His direction and script is brilliant, and every role is perfectly cast. Everything that happens in this movie has a purpose, and you don't realize it's hidden in plain sight until the final moments.

I personally prefer Inglourious Basterds and Kill Bill Vol 1, but I definitely agree this is his most intricate and well-crafted film. The way Tarantino uses the non-linear structure is so good, you're left confused for a large part of it and then it becomes so satisfying to see how the stories all fit together
"That watch has seen some shit." Said before you even heard the full story.
Vince's dealer apologizes for packaging his heroin wrong. When Mia finds white powder in a plastic bag she assumes it is cocaine; heroin is usually packaged in a baloon.
I've been contemplating during the whole reaction what character you could beat Jack Rabbit Slims. My vote is Mary Tyler Moore on the Dick Van Dyke TV show during the 1960s
When he was in Star Wars and the prop guys gave Samuel L Jackson his light saber they had engraved BMF on it as an homage to his character in this movie, also on Nick Fury's grave stone in Capt America and the Winter Soldier is the Ezekiel bible quote he says in this movie...

I'm pretty sure it's the cross of Coronado, which Marcelus Wallace (being an archeology enthusiast) would like to see returned to a museum, which is where it belongs.
When Jackson says in the restaurant he is "Going to walk the Earth and get into adventures...", describes the plot of the '70s tv show Kung Fu, with David Carradine. Carradine appeared in Kill Bill.
Love this movie, such an all time classic. You should also try Hateful Eight, personally my favorite movie by Tarantino
Glad you had fun watching this. This movie was filmed in and around my hometown when I was in HS. We saw the production crew on different locations. Much Respect to QT for using the most of his time with regards to filming. There was no unnecessary strain on traffic.
Great reaction! The reason we don't see "Jules" played by Samuel Jackson on the later scenes is because he must have retired or quit the "life" as he was telling Vince at the diner. Incidentally, this is also the reason Jules lives and Vincent dies. This movie is beyond iconic but it also made a huge impact when it came out in the mid Nineties. I was in my early twenties and I can assure you this was a cult movie at the time. This is when Tarantino really showcased his style of long dialogue pieces and unpredictable scenes. Tarantino says that he wondered what hitmen talked about during mundane moments or between jobs. This made it so much more interesting to watch. This film also brought John Travolta's acting career back from irrelevance. Tarantino wrote the characters of both Vincent and Jules with both actors in mind. I think you might be the first reactor I've seen that notice the "Fruit Brute" cereal box on the bedroom scene with Eric Stoltz. This cereal was actually defunct at the time and Tarantino just placed the box in the movie which is one of this trademarks. I think General Mills brought the cereal back after demand went up from this movie.
I saw this when it first came out. When John Travolta got shot by Willis, I was shouting "Nooooooo". Then they brought him back, which made the movie much better. Yes I am a Travolta fan.
Nice foreshadowing Jen! "This watch has seen some shit",
I hope that you will watch Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown. It is a really great film with lots of moving parts.

Tarantino grew up in L.A. - specifically, Lomita (not far from where I grew up...he even dropped out of the high school that my then sweetheart attended for a year), and he tries to use locations that are familiar to locals moreso than tourists, whenever possible: if he can't then he'll come up with something. The restaurant where Vincent and Mia go, is based on a place that used to be in Lakewood, Calif., called The Hop: you couldn't even get through the door there, unless you were dressed in '50's attire. Big Kahuna Burgers is based on a little burger joint in Gardena, that was called Pit Burger: it was run by a Hawaiian (or Samoan - I forget) family, and they had a teryaki burger that was to die for!!! (I miss that place...) he uses that name in a few of his films. The restaurant where the robbery takes place, used to be the Hawthorne Grill: that's what it was during filming (before that, it was called Holly's, for many years). I used to frequent a pizza place across the street from there, when I still lived there. And yes, he does have good taste in music: in "DeathProof" they even use his own personal jukebox & records!
Almost everything that happens in this movie is so random, and yet....it works perfectly. Like a crazy painting.

At one point you said, “I don’t know who the good guy is.” There are no “good guys” in this movie. Just guys you are rooting for, and some how this movie makes you root for most of them at one point or another.

I said that in my outro 👍
What the robbers say at the beginning about restaurants and the hero factor is true - when I was still in food service, I asked my manager what we would do if we got robbed, especially if it was after closing - I was the one who tended to be on register, and he said, "It's very simple - you don't fight the guy, you walk him back here, we give him the drawer, and we call the cops when he leaves. We aren't paid enough to be heroes."
Entertaining as always. I don't know what you've seen from the "Tarantino/Rodriguez film family", but Kill Bill, Hateful Eight, From Dusk Till Dawn and Desperado would all be nice reactions to see in the future. Just to name a few.
This movie marked the start of a new era in movie making -- telling a story out of order. Tarantino is a master of it. Other directors mess it up so their stories are confusing for no good reason. They think it makes them clever, but their art lacks the X factor that Tarantino has. This is one of my favorite movies.

No new ideas under the sun, it’s how you do it that makes it new and original. Tarantino somewhat invented the prequel origin story idea because Res Dogs was a take off on a movie called City On Fire. He created the story of what he thought was going on inside the warehouse, which was actually pretty clever.

Avary and Tarantino also laid all the scenes on the floor and put them in the order they thought went best. Originally Pulp was going to be three different movies in one. Tarantino was going to direct one story, Avary another, and Adam Rifkin was going to direct the third segment
Esmarelda Villa Lobos: scariest character in movie history.
I smiled when you said "that watch has seen some shit"...before you knew.
The briefcase contains the "McGuffin" 😎
Arguably, the defining film of the 1990s. More cult pulp goodness, you'd like _Kiss Kiss Bang Bang_ with RDJ & Val Kilmer.
At 5:38 I recently read that Samuel L Jackson had to wait a long time during his audition for this role, so he went out to get some fast food. When he was eating it he finally got called up to do his audition, and by that time he was really pissed off about being told to wait for quite a long time. So he went into the audition and kept eating his burger and drinking his soft drink looking angry and mean as hell at Tarantino and the others doing the audition. Tarantino was so impressed that not only did Jackson get the role, but Tarantino decided to add the burger eating and sprite drinking part into the scene.
A couple of things: it's canon that Vincent is the cousin of Mr Blonde in Reservoir Dogs, and in a deleted scene it's revealed that Vincent is also cousins with singer Suzanne Vega. Second, there are two "levels" to the Tarantinoverse, the "real world," and the movies that the people in that world watch. Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs take place in the "real world", while Kill Bill and Death Proof are movies that people in that universe watch. The Bride in Kill Bill is played by Mia, and it's partially adapted from the failed Fox Force Five pilot that she told Vincent about.
John Travolta was a superstar in the 1970s to the mid 80s. Then his career started to decline. Pulp Fiction is what revived his career and made him popular again.
Ha ha! "That watch has seen some sh*t!" Right before Bruce Willis's character is told where his dad hid the watch! 😂😅
The closest cultural synonym of Pulp Fiction in Italian is *Giallo.* Which is to say it is named for the cheap paper the original stories were printed on. Italians make rad movies.
Fun note about the dance competition. There was no confirmation that they actually won the trophy or just stole it. Because later in the movie, you can hear a news report of a trophy being stolen during Butch's story arc. (When he's going back for his father's watch. Just as he is walking past a black car. A TV Report can be heard about a trophy and Jack Rabbit Slim's.) It would have been just before 24:13
Fun review as always. PULP FICTION truly was the '90s personified. Thank you for screening it in its proper Panavision aspect ratio. More Travolta: SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER (1977), GREASE (1978), STAYING ALIVE (1983). More Tarantino: KILL BILL v1 & v2 (2003-04), THE HATEFUL EIGHT (2015), ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD (2019).
Jen - "'This watch has seen some shit"'. Foreshadowing
"The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin, Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be the shepherd."
The popular belief about what is in the briefcase is that it contains the soul of Marcellus Wallace which was taken from him via an incision on the back of his neck, which is why he has a bandaid on it all through the film.
Everything from Marcellus walking in front of Butch's car through Butch getting beaned in the intersection is one of the best-timed and _funniest_ pieces of editing I've ever seen.
Walking into a man’s home, eating his burger, and drinking his entire soda might be the biggest “I’m him” moment in cinema history.
6:04 the briefcase contains marcellus wallaces soul, it was taken out with a deal from the devil for power, it was removed from the back of his neck where the band aid is.
It's still one of the all-time funniest applications of the comedy rule of threes that in each of the three stories, John Travolta walks out of the bathroom to something horrible. There's no underselling how much this movie rocked the whole business. EVERYONE wanted to make something this cool. It changed how people wrote dialogue, made Samuel L. Jackson an instant icon, and inspired so many dark comedy/crime movies in the years after. But the only movie that I think ever actually made the "Pulp Fiction" structure work well was the original "Sin City." The best place for you to go next would be Tarantino's next movie, "Jackie Brown," and then "Out of Sight" with George Clooney; not only are both based on Elmore Leonard novels, but Michael Keaton appears in both playing the same character. In the latter, you get to see Clooney play a very roguish and charming bank robber (working with the same director as "Ocean's 11!")
"This watch has seen some s**t". Haha, Yup. 🙂
Probably the most popular theory is that the briefcase contains Marsellus’s soul. The evidence people use to back this up is the band-aid that Marsellus wears on the back of his neck throughout the film (supposedly this is where you can draw out the soul?), as well as the fact that the combination to open it is 666. Tarantino has always been mute on the contents of the briefcase other that to say that it’s a MacGuffin and it doesn’t really matter what’s inside, but he has said the band-aid thing is a coincidence. Ving Rhames actually had a band-aid there covering an unrelated injury and they just left it in. But you never really know with Tarantino.
This movie had so many famous scenes and quotable lines that a week after it was released, it seemed redundant to watch it because it was so much a part of the public consciousness. Everyone watched it anyway because it was amazing.
even after all these years, people argue about what was in the briefcase.Well done Quentin!
