To be the smallest of the 4 kings and be the first to challenge marvin hagler is legendary in itself. Duran was the only fighter to go the distance with hagler in his 12 successful title defenses. Absolute legend

He had around 70 pro fights and went up multiple weight classes to do so. They definitely didn’t get a prime Duran. I didn’t realize how good he was. I watched him in the 80s but he was old from so many fights and wars. I was born in the 70s and started watching boxing in the early 80s. Free on ABC if I remember right.

It was 15 rounds in that fight! Leonard and Hagler was the first 12 round middleweight Hampton ship fight! Leonard would not sign the contract unless it was only 12 rounds. Hagler obviously wanted the fight so bad he signed the contract anyway!

Unfortunately, the footage of Duran's wins over Sugar Ray and Iran Barkley were absent here. Copyright issues? The documentary was fantastic nonetheless. It sucked to see footage of 'No Mas' and a brutal knockout at the hands of Hitman Hearns without getting footage of Duran's biggest wins against Leonard in their first fight and the greatest win/accomplishment against Iran Barkley. The win against Davey Moore was shown though. Again, copyright issues win some and not others?

Duran was the kind of boxer who could waltz into his opponent's hometown, beat the tar out of him, and leave with the crowd cheering his name. One of the most complete and exciting fighters in history without a shadow of a doubt.

Only thing Duran lacked was discipline, he had power, defense, speed, boxing iq, fearless. If he stayed dedicated and disciplined I think he would’ve gone down as the best boxer to ever live next to Muhammad Ali

@@putoelquelolea3193 that is one thing about a fighter being so great. They realize they are so good that they can win with not much training. And Duran was deep into his career at that point, so many fights, you get tired of it (training) it's just a natural human thing. Duran was usually in top shape in his younger years.

What flavor is the Kool-Aid for you, Les? Roberto Duran quit in the 8th round against Sugar Ray Leonard because he was going to get knocked out. He was knocked out by Thomas Hearns in the second round with a monstrous right hand and that came after Hearns humiliated Duran in the first round. Duran didn’t even know where his corner was located.

Panamanian here! After Duran Vs Leonard 1, my grandpa went to the club in his hometown, and Duran showed up to visit a girl he had been seeing there. He bought everyone drinks the entire night and my grandpa says he’s never been more drunk then that night 😭 Great to see you cover Duran finally

My Dad use to box he was born in Belize he met Duran in Panama City when he was a teenager he said Duran was very intimidating but was a man of the people you can shake his hand and pat him on the shoulders Duran would give money to anyone

Duran is a living legend. To win at that many weight classes and even at an age when most fighters are garbage speaks for itself. The Barkley fight was just the cherry on top of an utterly unbelievable career. Duran has to be in consideration for the greatest pound for pound fighter of all time. The true warrior.

Among the famed 'Four Kings' of the 80s, Duran stands out the greatest in my humble opinion. The manner in which he conquered his own weight division and the others beyond his own weight class is a grand display of his greatness as a boxer. It does not really matter if he lost to his contemporaries due to his own mistakes, his magnificent redemption of himself far outweighs the shortcomings he had. Thank you for this, Mr. Vincent. You truly gave 'Mano de Piedras' the honor due to him in this documentary. God bless you, man!

He was good, but got MAULED by Hearns, quit during a fight with Leonard, and couldn't best Hagler. A great one, but the weakest of the "4 Kings" IMHO.

@@Whiterun_Gaurd Tyson loves pigeons and frosted flakes, Duran likes Ice cream and good parties. Both hit incredibly hard and their tenacity is equal. Yet, Duran will talk trash and beat you senseless. Tyson, his fists were his words. I love both of them and they were a good piece of childhood.

I knew of Duran in the 80’s and when I found out the terror he was in the 70’s my jaw dropped. He is with no doubt the best light weight ever.

That combination from Duran against Barkley is one of the greatest examples of boxing i’ve ever seen.

I’m from Panama City, Panama 🇵🇦 and believe me even in this generation they know who Roberto Duran is. The part where the champ dies with aids and he hugs him made me tear up. You would have had to live in those times to understand the misinformation about that virus to understand. So for him to go and hug that man and show him respect and dignity shows he was a true friend. Great sportsmanship on his part. It’s complete now, four KINGS will never be forgotten 👑 👑 👑 👑.

He absolutely is above the rest of the fabulous 4. The guy was 72-1 before the fab 4 was even a thing!! He was a small guy moving out of the division he dominated for so long, and the only one to beat Leonard. Those fights don’t define Durans career, but the casuals don’t have a clue.

The greatest fighter of all time in my opinion. Too many people place emphasis on his fabulous 4 series of bouts, what people don’t realise is that he was already the greatest lightweight of all time before those guys even fought each other!!! 72-1 !!

Look at how Duran did against Hagler, the greatest lightweight ever moving up and giving the greatest middleweight of all time one hell of a close fight.

He fought in the 60's, 70's, 80's 90's and 00's!! He fought until he was 50. But this excellent video covers the great period of Lightweight champion in 1972 (aged 21) to Middleweight champion in 1989 (aged 37). The majority of his losses were from aged 37-50!! Along with Tyson and Hagler, my favorite boxer of all time.

Was lucky enough to see him beat Iran the Blade Barkley in February of 1989, for me it was his final masterpiece in a long HOF career.

What I like about Robert Duran is his honesty and sincerity. And he was on the side of the poor. He was Boxing World's Robin Hood. And he's the best boxer ever to live. For that reason, I rank him above Muhamed Ali. And joe Fraiser was the real Rocky.

THIS, this is the one I've been waiting for. Thank you. People sadly talk about him and think about him his higher weight divisions, but when I studied tape coming up I was blown away to learn how light he really was in his prime. There has never been a lightweight that will touch what duran was. 62-1 54 ko's and avenged his only blemish at his real weight class. Only fought the toughest, back when boxing wasn't the bullshit it's become. There is not doubt in my mind that he is the single greatest lightweight of all time.

Absolutely agree about the bs. All of the promotions, belts and divisions keeping the best fighters and bouts from being made so they could print more money. It literally stole the passion and reverence for me as a fan. Almost 40 now but as a teen I couldn't articulate what or why it was happening as a young man but I knew I was so frustrated and eventually disgusted certain fights wouldn't be made due to rival television brands and companies.

Roberto Duran is not just a 'Hands of Stone' but also a 'Heart of Lion'. Watching his battle with Iran Barkley is like watching 'Rocky vs. Clubber Lang' in _Rocky 3_ (my favorite of all Rocky's). Great respect to you Champ!🥇🏆🥊

Duran will always be in my top 5 in his prime.

Finally the kings saga is complete you the man joe nobody brings it home like you

leonard getting a rematch that soon after the first fight is ridiculous but that's what he did: get unfair advantages based on his celebrity. i wish duran had beat leonard in the second fight too.

Never liked Duran as a fighter because of the sugar ray incident, but after watching this you can’t help but be in awe.

Four Legends. They all did incredible things, but Duran produced magic at times. What a time for boxing.

Hands of stone was no joke! Oh his best and most conditioned day, I don’t think there was anyone at lightweight or welterweight that could beat him! He had defense, handspeed, in fighting, intelligence, and a scary will to win! There wasn’t anything he didn’t have! So glad you made this about him. I have been waiting🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊

In the early 70's I saw a Roberto Duran fight and that was the start of a journey. Maybe it's because him and I are the same age, regardless his tenacity, his will to prevail and acceptance of who the real adversary in life really was inspired me to this day. I lost track of how many videos I've watched of his fights, they are like a touchstone in life. Hand me my mouth piece!

Wow that combination against Barkley gave me chills. Simply awesome 👏🏼

Excellent video. Duran was the best lightweight ever. I was at that fight in A.C. when Duran beat Barkley. I’d say about 80% of the crowd was for Duran.

2 weeks before the Tommy Hearns fight he was here in Miami drinking and partying hard on night clubs,where I met him. His wild outside of the ring life took a lot of his natural ability as a fighter.

This guy is one of Manny Pacquiao's idols, they have a similar story, "from rags to riches" by pursuing and living their passions. And both are legends, of course...😆

Duran's style was the perfect style to counter the dancing/running BS style of boxing. No boxer can be called to have a perfect style in boxing but perhaps Roberto's style was the closest to the perfection. Artur Beterbiev also has a very similar fighting/mauling style like Roberto Duran.

Depending on your style that is most adaptive to the way you are boxing studying all of those great fighters is one way to learn the sweet science, and then from there adapt it to your own style that suits you best. I was for the most part always a boxing fan, my dad used to say there was never anyone like Sugar Ray Robison, he could do it all. However, my true love for the sport started when Bill Gallo a sports cartoonist and columnist was on a show evaluating the top three fighters of all time, in their respective weight division. When they got to the lightweight division, I think they gave Duran the nod for the top spot, AND this was long before his fight with SRL and anyone else in the higher weight divisions. Anyway, they showed this old black and white film clip of Duran fighting this Japanese fighter. In normal speed it looked like the Japanese fighter was all over Duran. It was happening too fast, then they showed it in slow motion where Duran was dodging almost every one of those punches, I think that counted off over 10 punches, then doing a move with what they later called the Waltz and did the same to his opponent. The difference is Duran connected with his punches. SRL in his interview with Howard Cosell after his 1st fight with Duran acknowledged that "Duran is not easy to hit" . SRL had an 8-inch reach advantage, extremely difficult to overcome. One of the best inside fighters the sport has ever seen, so good even Hagler was cautious. Anyway enjoy it for the art it is. Fighters to study and read up on in my opinion are Willy Pep, Harry Grebb, Marcel Cerdan more recently not so notable but overlooked great fighters in the smaller division would be Johnny Tapia, and a great we never really got to see his full potential was Salvador Sanchez.

Duran has literally the eyes of a wolf.. Unbelievable fighting spirit!

Duran was my dads favourite boxer. He was the one who introduced me and my older bro into boxing and we love it. Loved seeing people transform into stars, even getting into the ring ourselves trying to hit like Duran. This man is a legend outside of boxing.

This is awesome, thank you. Physiologically, just look at the width of his clavicles (shoulder bones) in proportion to the size of his frame, he is a beast. The torque he can create from his centre line with such broad bone structure accounts for the blows that 'dont look much' but still KO people. You can't learn this type of power, you're either born with it or you'e not.

No, Duran had incredible waist and knee movement and upper and lower body combination, making him extremely balanced on his feet but more importantly that allowed him to put the weight of his whole body on every punch, every jab and even most uppercuts. As for the shoulder, of course he had a strong and wide shoulder but that's very common in the lower weights

A lot of parallels between Duran and Pacquiao. Both in their prime at light weight would be the ultimate fantasy match.

I don't think it's much of a question as to who was the more fundamentally skilled fighter but I'd say Manny would have had a bit of athletic advantage in the form of speed and explosiveness. You can never underestimate how easily he could land that fast sneaky big left hand up the middle and put ANYONE on their ass. If I was betting the house I'd bet Duran but Manny is my personal favorite of all time and don't doubt that he could have caught Duran cold and dropped him early like he has so many of his opponents.

Talking at lightweight and Durans prime. He hit a little harder. Better footwork. His hand speed as a lightweight was equal to Pacquiao. Better inside grappling. Both were great at angles. Both had great chins at that weight It would have been a fun fight to watch but Duran was just a little better than, or equal too, Pacquiao, in everything. Duran in a solid decision 2-3 type decision in a 12 round fight. In a 15 round fight a bigger spread. Prime Duran was devestating in rounds that ended in 'teen'.

@@scottg6754 I agree with most of what you said besides the power and speed. Their power may have been comparable though I lean towards Pac but as far as speed, you're just flat wrong. Hand and foot speed goes to Manny, no debate.

Pound for pound, this guy is the man. He hits hard ... very very hard and almost impossible to hit in his younger days.

Thank you for this. Easily my favorite fighter of all time. He had everything, Tenacity, Chin, Heart, Power, Meanness, and a vastly underrated defense. It was an honor to watch his career.

A fricking legend among G.O.A.T.'s!!!!

His win against Sugar Ray in their first fight was the beginning of his demise. He took the Marvin Hagler quote about waking up in silk sheets to the definition. (Fairly certain Hagler said that) Duran, was at his very best in that fight and was a world beater.

He had such a crazy few years after that monumental win, obviously what happened in the rematch, then losing to Kirkland Laing, getting drilled by Tommy Hearns, losing to Hagler. The fact he was able to win the middleweight title against Barkley is almost as great a victory as his win over Ray.

I've always felt that Leonard deliberately threw that first fight, and I still do. The idea that Leonard fought Duran flat footed just to beat him at his own game is just BS. Leonard was a 9-5 favorite, and my money says that Leonard bet his money on Duran to score more money from losing than he made in the ring anyway. In the "No Mas !!!" fight, Duran was confused because he felt like he was up against a totally different fighter, and he was. Leonard was faking it all the way in the 1st fight for a Big Pay Day with the bookies, and an even Bigger Pay Day in the rematch. Leonard could've easily beat Duran in the 1st fight if he had just stuck to his style. For Leonard to have rationally chosen to fight the way he did in Fight #1 is Just A STUPID Idea !!! My only question is how much Angelo Dundee made betting against his own fighter, because I'm certain that he did.

@@JosephKulik2016 Leonard did not throw the fight. Yes he was favored because he was a great welterweight champion. Usually great larger fighters beat the smaller fighter who is moving up. But more sportswriters felt Duran would win. In fact most picked Duran by knock out. So Vegas slightly favored Ray but sportswriters favored Roberto. The fight more than lived up to expectation. Duran kept the pressure and Ray kept fighting back. A lesser fighter would have folded with the punishment Roberto delivered. In my opinion this was the best all around fight of the decade. Roberto would never be the same after this. He lost the hunger after this. He did pick up a couple of titles late in his career but he was nowhere near the same. But his prime was 1975 to 1978. He was a beast at lightweight and in my opinion the greatest lightweight ever.

I will say that's after what 75 fights for pennies? To any normal human being I would think that is a natural reaction, every Leonard fell apart with the fame, Hagler is an honest to Monk with his dedication

I only discovered your channel recently Joseph.. & think I’ve watched over half of your videos already! Your work is an art in itself, bravo to you sir!

I’d never actually seen any replay of the Duran/Barkley fight before. I’d heard a little about it over the years.. but I think that was the most epic thing I’ve ever seen. Iran Barkley( mid twenties) was very well rounded and talented, an intimidating physical specimen for his weight class. Even with it being Roberto Duran(38) (who, regardless of whatever the case may be, could always decide to show up), still.. on paper it should have been Barkley coming away with a KO. This was the general pre-fight consensus. It made you forget about “No mas” and everything else in the video previously leading up to this fight. What Duran did to put Barkley to the canvas after almost getting completely murked by him (that hit that staggered Duran backwards would have literally ended anyone else’s night ) was just.. incredible. I’m just speechless.

Finally we got the "Hands of Stone" documentary and it didn't disappoint!! 💯

Muhammad ali, Roberto Duran and Mike tyson are my all time favourite boxer's since childhood 🥊 🥊

That was the era of boxing that I enjoyed the most and I was lucky to meet Duran in Panama at his restaurant when I visited Panama in 2011. He showed me his lightweight championship belt and his classic fights were being played on TV in his restaurant. We had a long conversation about his career. I don't bother to spend time and money in boxing today because it is a travesty, and it doesn't come close to the era of boxing when Duran was in the game.

@@WarioSaysSo lol yea it’s kinda like the canelo situation. Amazing fighter but everytime someone brings up how good canelo is everyone saying peds. Duran is one of the greats but that no mas fight hurt his legacy.

When I start my boxing career, I want none other than Joseph Vincent to do my documentary. Hats off to you my friend.
